My Reflection #2

Article posted June 10, 2012 at 10:24 PM GMT • comment • Reads 110

Thanks to Ms. Lin and Mr. Garrison, we had a GREAT school year. Both Ms. Lin and Mr. Garrison gave us really interesting projects. Mr. Garrison taught us that it was okay to fail. He also taught us a lot about technology. Ms. Lin taught us time management by giving us loads of homework.

This, year we had two really fun field trips: Age of Sail and Science Camp. In Age of Sail, we got to learn how it was for sailors in the olden times.  Science Camp, we learned a lot about nature. Everyday, we got to go on extraordinary hikes.

Expedia

Article posted March 31, 2012 at 01:09 AM GMT • comment • Reads 19

Expedia.... Have you heard of it? If you have, you probably heard it from your parents. You might have heard your parents talking about while planning a trip, but do you really know what expedia is? Expedia is basically just website to help people book their vacation. Expedia is most well known in the United States of America, United Kingdom, and Italy. On October 2011, Expedia was punished by needing to pay 367,000 European dollars. Why did they get fined? They got fined because they were reported to be telling customers that the hotel was full even when it wasn’t, and having them go to a nearby hotel. According to http://www.alexa.com/siteinfo/expedia.com, cutomers spend about 44 seconds on each page and around 5  minutes each time they go to the website. People are able to use Expedia in these countries: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Italy, Ireland, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Google

Article posted March 14, 2012 at 05:05 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 23

Google is a very interesting company. On special days, they would put up a google doodle for that day. Sometimes, the doodles like the Valentine’s Day  would be a video too. These google doodles are always entertaining for kids like us. Another good thing about google is that they have so many useful things that are free! For example, they have Gmail, google chrome, google search, google maps, google earth, google translate, and much, much more. These are all what people use daily. Without google, the whole computer thing would be pretty bad. Google definitely made a big difference in technology.

STAR testing

Article posted February 29, 2012 at 05:19 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 42

I always wondered why STAR testing had to be in April instead of at the end of the school year. Here are some reasons why it should be at the end of the school year.

1. Our teacher probably doesn’t have enough time to cover all the curriculum.

2. Our teacher would have extra time to help us review.

3. We (the students) would not be so rushed.

4. If the test was at the end of the school year, our parents will not worry as much about the STAR testing, knowing that the teacher had enough time to prepare.

These are just some reasons why STAR testing should be at the end of the school year.

Valentine's Day

Article posted February 15, 2012 at 01:35 AM GMT • comment • Reads 22

On this year’s Valentine’s Day, we had a party, but I didn’t even get to take part of this party. Why? I had to go to many doctor appointments. I needed to do this asthma test, an allergy test and an appointment with an allergist.

Markers vs. Color Pencils

Article posted February 7, 2012 at 07:17 PM GMT • comment • Reads 27

Markers vs. Color Pencils, which one is better?

I personally like both because they are just so different. Unlike color pencils, markers are better when you want the color really to show brightly without needing to color very hard. It is also good if you want something to be only one color. But when the marker runs out of ink, you need to throw it away and get new ones. Color pencils on the other hand, are easier when you want your color to be light or if you want your drawing to be a sketch. It is easier if you want your colors to start lighter and gradually get darker because you have more control. Also, when your pencil tip breaks, all you need to do is go sharpen it. Color pencils and markers are definitely both helpful in many ways.

Bubble Wrap

Article posted January 30, 2012 at 04:57 PM GMT • comment • Reads 20

Bubble Wrap is a very odd thing because it is what I think one of the weirdest inventions. It actually can be used for many different uses. It was probably invented for packaging, but people do a lot of other things with Bubble Wrap. For example, some people use it to stall younger kids. They would place a sheet of Bubble Wrap in front of the person’s face and tell them to pop it. In a way, Bubble Wrap can actually make you think pretty hard when doing this because you need to think of ways that would let you pop the bubbles faster and easier. Bubble Wrap also has many more uses, but I will let you think of them yourself, now that you already know some.

Dreams

Article posted January 25, 2012 at 04:51 PM GMT • comment • Reads 13

I often have questions about dreams, but those questions never get answered. Some of those questions are:
Why are dreams always so crazy random?
Why don’t you remember your dreams in the morning unless you wake up in the middle of it?
Why do you even happen?
Why do you sometimes get dreams, and sometimes not?

If you know the answers to any of these questions, please answer by commenting.

Modified Pacers VS. Pacers

Article posted January 5, 2012 at 07:32 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 40

Modified Pacers vs. Pacers! Which one is better/easier? Well to me, it really just depends what kind of person you are and how athletic you are. You see, Modified Pacers would probably be easier to the more athletic kind of person. For example, you have been running for a while and you are starting to get tired. At this point, you could always go to the second line and start running from there, it would be much more relaxing. Also, everyone runs the same amount of laps so there is less to compare. But if you are not a very athletic person, you might prefer the normal Pacers better because you can stop whenever you want. To me, I personally like Modified Pacers better because I think it is much easier. Which one do you like better?

The Holidays

Article posted December 16, 2011 at 03:58 AM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 112

~The Holidays~

What do the holidays mean to me? I consider the holidays as a time for me to relax and have fun. To me, the holidays are also a time for family reunions. During the holidays, we usually go skiing at Mount Rose or Dodge Ridge because my dad somehow always gets this deal to stay at the Grand Sierra Hotel for free. We go skiing at least twice a year because our whole entire family loves to go skiing except for my sister because she hates the long car ride. Sometimes my cousin from New Jersey and her family come over to go skiing with us, but we normally just go by ourselves or go with friends. Every year, my dad would drive our family to Vasona Park to look at Christmas lights. The lights there are awesome! Once in a a while, my mom would invite my friends over to come play. But of course, I have to finish all my work before that happens. My house is always decorated for Christmas. We put either gold Christmas lights or rainbow Christmas lights outside our house. On the inside, we have a Christmas tree that is fully decorated, stockings hung near the fire place, little Christmas figures sitting in random places, and of course presents under our Christmas tree.On Christmas Eve, my family goes to a church to celebrate Christmas. It’s a different church every year. Last year, we went to Bethel Church. And the year before, we went to Stanford Church. And the year before that, we went to Presbyterian Church. They were all pretty similar because all we did there was watch their skits and sing Christmas carols. On Christmas morning, my sister and I would wake up early in the morning because we are always excited to know what gifts we received. The bad thing is, before we get to open our presents, we need to take a lot of family pictures and individual pictures. The holidays are full of activities and mean a lot to me.

Breakfast

Article posted November 8, 2011 at 06:24 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 59

What do you eat for breakfast? Many people eat cereal, oatmeal, or bagels with yogurt or milk for breakfast. Don’t you think eating those foods every single day is boring? I wouldn’t survive eating bagels/cereal/oatmeal everyday! I especially wouldn’t survive eating bagels everyday because I think bagels are extremely disgusting. Don’t you just hate bagels, well I hate the bready parts. Bagels taste even worse when you eat it plain. I would not be able to eat plain oatmeal everyday, but to me, it would be better to eat oatmeal everyday than eating bagels everyday.

Age of Sail Part 7

Article posted November 4, 2011 at 04:55 PM GMT • comment (3) • Reads 115

After we took another bathroom break, Mr. Tact finally brought us aboard the Balclutha. Mr. Tact led us to the deck right outside the sleeping quarters. We sat down in the exact same order ( with the crew mate in front ). She was testing us on tying knots ( so boring ). This was all he said,” Who could tie the bowline/square/cleat hitch knot?” The funny thing was, when we a lot of people couldn’t tie the bowline knot, she tried to show us it, but she couldn’t tie it either. She called a girl up to tie bowline knot, she could tie a bowline knot. Mr. Tact tried to tie another bowline knot, but she still couldn’t! The other person with Mr. Tact said, “Even the girl can tie a bowline knot!” It was kind awkward to see a kid do something better than our second mate.

Age of Sail Part 6

Article posted October 26, 2011 at 04:42 PM GMT • comment • Reads 63

He asked us ( the Galley Crew) whether we remembered to bring a snack for everyone. Our mate told him that we brought cookies for everyone. When he heard this, he started yelling,” Where is it then ?” We ( the Galley Crew ) all turned to look at the teacher. He shouted,” Well, say something , does your teacher have it or what ? Speak up! “ Our mate said,” Our teacher has it.” Mr. Clide screamed at our teacher,” Do you have it ? Give it to them! “ When I heard this, i bit my tongue, trying not to burst out laughing because usually it’s our teacher that yells at us, and I never imagined how it would look like for her to get yelled, but now I did. Our teacher slowly handed our mate our two bags of cookies. Mr. Clide who I guess is pretty impatient, started yelling ( again ) ,” Hurry up! It doesn’t take this long to give someone their cookies !” He went in this house like place, (I suppose that that was his office) and brought out Mr. Tact and this other lady. After that, Mr. Tact basically just took over.

Age of Sail Part 5

Article posted October 20, 2011 at 02:17 AM GMT • comment (6) • Reads 110

Mr. Clide ordered us to go aboard this ship ( not the Balclutha )and go on the deck of the ship and count number of seals. After counting the seals, we were supposed report back to him. When we went to look for seals, there were none. We looked all around, but they were no where! We walked back to where all our backpacks and sleeping bags were, and told him that we didn’t see any seals. This was his reaction, “ You didn’t see any seals at all? You guys have such bad eyesight ! “ This time we weren’t as stunned because we already seen Mr. Clide screaming his head off and being extremely rude. Everyone including our teacher were all quiet since we didn’t him to start shouting at everyone again.

Age of Sail Part 4

Article posted October 14, 2011 at 05:07 AM GMT • comment (4) • Reads 113

We met at the area right outside the bathroom. Everyone lined up in line order of their crew. The crew mate of the crew is at the front , then the rest of the line order does not matter. Anyways, we just sat there next there with our backpack and our sleeping bag for quite a while until a man came out. The second he came out, he started greeting us by yelling. We were pretty shocked because we never expected Age of Sail to start like this. We eventually found out that his name is Mr. Clide and he was not our first mate, second mate, or our captain. He’s basically is the person that introduces to the place. Before he ordered us to do anything, introduced us to Mr. Tact ( it’s actually a she but I guess all the first mates, captains, and second mates are all supposed to be addressed as a “Mr.”) Mr. Tact had a talk with all the crew mates while everyone else just wait there. When they came back, they were totally different. They gave orders to their crews like this , “ Galley Crew ( in this case, it would be Galley Crew because I’m in the the Galley Crew, but it can be any crew ) , make an animal sound that you would hear at the harbor. Carry on.”

Age of Sail Part 3 ( continued from Age of Sail Part two )

Article posted October 5, 2011 at 09:02 PM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 116

An hour later, we met together with at the home base. All the crews but the Boat Crew stayed together. We were waited for the Boat Crew for an extremely long time. While waiting , we ( the kids) were sitting and laying on our rolled up sleeping bag. We were all wondering where the Boat Crew went. I was quite worried because two of my best friends were in the Boat Crew. Where were they? What were they doing? Were they lost ? These questions were whirling around my head like crazy. At last , the Boat Crew arrived at the home base. Everyone was asking the kids and the Boat Crew’s chaperon why they were so late. The other chaperons and teacher asked the Boat Crew’s chaperon ,“ Why did you come half an hour late ?” Boat Crew’s chaperon replied , “ I thought we were supposed to come at 1:30 , not 1:00.” Meanwhile , my friends from the Boat Crew were telling me about the donuts their chaperon bought for them. Then , we had one last bathroom break before officially starting our Age of Sail.

Age of Sail Part two ( continued from Age of Sail Part One)

Article posted September 30, 2011 at 04:51 PM GMT • comment • Reads 91

It was about time for lunch , or at least it felt like it was lunchtime , because I was starving ! One reason why I was so hungry was most likely because I did not eat or drink anything during the entire bus ride. Anyways , I decided to consume my lunch even though the teacher did not say to do so yet , who could resist not eating a delicious lunch when they were starving like crazy ? Not me ! Let me guess , now you probably are wondering about what I had for lunch. If so , here’s your answer : sushi (Californian rolls) , Gogurt (yogurt in a tubed like wrapper) , a juicy red apple , two miniature sized tangerines , and of course a bottle of water. Doesn’t that sound like a perfect lunch ? After finishing our lunches, we had about an hour of free time , meaning that we could go anywhere as long as we stayed with our Tall Sailor and our crew. Of course we couldn’t go too far , or else we would not be able to come in time. Our crew just decided to visit the Ghirardelli Square , since it seemed to be the closest place and I don’t remember going there. Before entering the door of the chocolate store, we got a sample of pumpkin spice chocolate. When I first got it , I thought I would not like it because I don’t like chocolate with caramel in it and the chocolate had pumpkin spice flavored caramel inside it . But after trying it , I decided that it didn’t taste that bad.

Age of Sail Part One

Article posted September 22, 2011 at 07:29 PM GMT • comment (5) • Reads 171

After an extremely long bus ride, we finally arrived at San Francisco. Our Age of Sail would take place in San Francisco, Pier 39, inside the Balclutha (a ship made during the Age of Sail period). We were going to stay overnight in the Balclutha! Our entire class have been already sorted in differrent crews. I’ve been sorted into the Galley Crew (the crew that does the cooking). There is five people in my crew including me, two boys and three girls. We were practicing our knots, vocabulary , and chanteys for two whole weeks. Today is the day I have been waiting for all along. Back in the classroom, our teachers had warned us about the consequences if we did something wrong. They said that the captain, first mate, second mate, and everyone else on the ship would treat us just like how they treated sailors in the olden days. They also told us that the captain and first mate are usually the meaner ones. So if we do something wrong in front of the captain or first mate, we would be in big trouble. But if we did something wrong in front of the second mate , the second mate might spare us , depending on what we did wrong.
