Pencils

Article posted April 11, 2012 at 04:06 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 169

Pencils are wooden sticks with lead inside. Some are mechanical, so it is plastic with a long stick of lead inside. When you run out of lead in a mechanical pencil, you can replace it with lead from a tube. However, it must be the same type of lead, or the pencil won’t work. If the lead sticking out from the end of a wooden pencil is short, you can sharpen the wood around the pencil. Even though the pencil will be shorter, the lead sticking out will be longer. You use pencils to write out words, numbers, or other symbols. The lead forms words on paper. If you mess up in your writing, usually there is an eraser at the top of the pencil that lets you make your misspelled word vanish off the paper. Don’t suck the top of a pencil. The graphite would poison you. There are also colored pencils. You should be using them to color in certain parts of a picture. Colored pencils come in different colors. There are all the colors of the rainbow, and many more. And there are flexible pencils that can bend and twist or be tied in a knot. Pencils are tools used in school everyday, until computers came...

Marvel Super Hero Squad

Article posted April 6, 2012 at 04:23 AM GMT • comment • Reads 40

Superhero Squad is a smaller and cuter version of superheroes that my brother likes a lot right now. It’s a team, with Iron Man as its leader, Hulk as a strength factor, Reptil and Wolverine as animal factors, Silver Surfer as an energy factor, Falcon as speed factor, Thor as weather factor, and a lot more. The bad characters are Dr. Doom, Abomination, MODOK, Enchantress, and others that I know only by sight. There are all kinds of Superhero Squad shows that my mom downloads. In season 1, Dr. Doom is looking for infinity fractals (bits of the infinity sword) to put together the infinity sword (a special sword that can make solid things vanish) and conquer Superhero City. In the commercial that always shows in all the videos is of long ago, when Doom really did repair the infinity sword and was ready to take over the world when Iron Man flies up to stop him. They wrestle for the infinity sword high in the air, when it breaks and sends infinity fractals flying all over Superhero City. Towards the end of season 1, Galactus comes and is about to eat the Earth when the superheroes mend the infinity sword and try to vanish him. It doesn’t work! Even Dr. Doom couldn’t get the sword to make Galactus leave. Silver Surfer leaves Earth and becomes Galactus’ herald again so that Galactus would not eat Earth. The Silver Surfer leaves, but Dr. Doom goes to jail. I can’t wait to see season 2! At first only Nathan liked superheroes, but now he got my sister and me to watch it with him. It is actually quite interesting. Superhero Squad is obviously created by Marvel, not DC Universe.

Clothes (Clothing)

Article posted April 4, 2012 at 02:33 AM GMT • comment • Reads 17

All people should be wearing clothes right now, unless they are showering or something. Most animals don’t wear clothes though. There are many different types of clothing, like dresses, skirts, shirts, pants, coats, socks, and others. There are also many types of clothing materials, like leather, fur, and woven materials. People would wear different clothing under different conditions. If you are at the beach, you might be wearing swimming suit if you will be splashing of surfing in the waves. If you are playing in snow, you probably will be wearing thick coats, gloves and a hat. If you came out of a shower, you might be wearing a bathrobe before you change into regular clothes. Men and women usually wear different clothes. Woman can wear dresses and skirts. Men can wear tuxedos. We usually don’t see men wearing high-heels walking around. However, men can wear robes, togas, or kilts, which were often worn by men in earlier times.

Teeth

Article posted March 31, 2012 at 03:31 PM GMT • comment • Reads 14

Teeth are found in a mouth that help the animal chew food. Mammals grow two types of teeth. For a human, they start off with baby teeth. The baby teeth later fall out to be replaced by teeth that should last them the rest of their lives. Some animals grow only one set of teeth, while some grow lots. For example, a shark grows new teeth every two weeks to replace the old, worn-out ones. Animal teeth are able to be kept for a long time. Herbivores have lots of molars for chewing up plants, and carnivores have sharp canines to rip meat apart. Some dolphins have over a hundred teeth. All horses have twelve premolars, twelve molars, and twelve incisors. Few female horses have canines, and the horses that do have them only have one or two. Walrus tusks are canine teeth that never stop growing.

Lego Man in Space

Article posted March 26, 2012 at 04:06 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 65

Two teenagers just created a homemade science experiment. They sent a tiny lego man into space, and captured its flight on film. The teenagers attached a weather balloon to a lego man. It blasted off from a soccer field in Canada. Four cameras flew off on the spacecraft to record the lego man’s flight. The balloon shot up sixteen miles into the atmosphere before it popped. The spacecraft gently floated back to the Earth because of a handmade parachute the boys had made and sewed onto the spacecraft themselves.

Later, the boys found the lego man and spacecraft seventy- six miles away from the place it blasted off. The video from the craft is very popular online.

A Comparison of Age of Sail and Science Camp II

Article posted March 26, 2012 at 04:02 PM GMT • comment • Reads 43

                                          (continued from blog article below)

Second, Science Camp an Age of Sail had some differences. For example, how much time we had on the field trip, the things we got to do on the field trips, what happens at night, how early we get up and late we get to bed, and the groups they put us in. There was a big difference in the time of Age of Sail and Science Camp. It’s obvious that Age of Sail only lasted about a day and Science Camp lasted about a week if you had been there. I kind of liked Age of Sail’s shortness, because I don’t think I last another day of waking up around 5:00 to stand on a set of stairs and stare out over the bay for an hour. However, I wish Science Camp had been a lot longer. Science Camp was fun. Science Camp was better than Age of Sail in ways, like how late we go to bed and how early we get up. In Science Camp, we got to go to bed around 9:30 and woke up around 7:00. That’s about my usual schedule. For Age of Sail, we went to bed around 10:00 (I think I can handle that) and woke up around 5:00 when the sky was still dark. That, I cannot handle. I was literally falling asleep on the stairs. Before all that, at night, we’d do different things. For Science Camp, we’d haves some awesome activity to do only at night. For example, we once had Astronomy Night. For Age of Sail, the Galley Crew had started the clean up while putting away dishes in between. That was hard, because we had to wipe down every speck of the pantry. In Age of Sail and Science Camp, we also had different activities to do to keep us entertained. For Science Camp, Field Class took up most of our time. I think hiking up the creek was one of the best things we did while hiking. For Age of Sail, the Galley Crew spent most of the time shut in the pantry cooking dinner and preparing tomorrow’s breakfast. Those two activities are very different. The way they split us into groups was different too. Even though both field trips put us in different groups, the groups were different things. For Science Camp, we were split into about a million cabin groups, because there were two other schools with us. Those groups were called cabin groups. For Age of Sail, it was only our class on the trip at that time, so there were about seven different crews. There were about seven different crews with seven different jobs. See, the groups have different names.

Science Camp and Age of Sail had plenty of things that are different and the same. All of the things above made Science Camp and Age of Sail their best, even the freezing part.

A Comparison of Age of Sail and Science Camp I

Article posted February 3, 2012 at 02:56 AM GMT • comment • Reads 25

(Now, you’ve probably heard about Age of Sail from other blogs...)

Even though Science Camp and Age of Sail had many differences and similarities, it was hard to tell which of them was the best. Their similar places can be very close together in comparison, but the differences can be very far apart.

First of all, Science Camp and Age of Sail had a few similarities. For example, we slept overnight at both of them, had to clean in both of them, had to memorize and sing songs in both of them, and sometimes got mail in both of them. It was also very cold and windy in both of them! When we had overnight sleeping, we also had to bring a sleeping bag for both of them too. I used the very same sleeping bag for both Age of Sail and Science Camp. For the cleaning in Science Camp, we had to clean our cabin and make it tidy every Coyote cabin and the Balclutha’s pantry was shining. We also had to memorize songs in Ms. Lin’s class to sing in both Science Camp and Age of Sail. For Science Camp, we had to clean every day because we had cabin inspection. For the cleaning in Age of Sail, I was in the Galley Crew, so my crew and I were supposed to clean the dishes, except another crew was so kind and got a punishment to clean the dishes instead. So we took that time to clean up and literally scrub with a wet towel the pantry, where we had been cooking all day. Eventually, both my Coyote cabin and the pantry were shining. We also had to memorize two songs for both Science Camp and Age of Sail, one slow and one more lively. They were called 靜夜星空 and 營火. We were tested on both of them by our Chinese teacher. For Age of Sail, we learned three chanteys, called Leave Her Johnny, John Kanaka, and Sally Racket. We were also tested on those three songs. I think they were all hard to learn, especially Leave Her Johnny. We received mail in Science Camp and Age of Sail, too. For Science Camp, I received mail on Wednesday from my teacher when I was sitting down in the amphitheater. She just handed it over. For Age of Sail, the captain had us all below deck, when Sea biscuit, made his funny story about being hit in the head by the US Mail sack with all of the class’ mail inside. I think Age of Sail’s delivery of mail was better than the way Science Camp gave us our mail. And of course, both trips were freezing (especially Age of  Sail’s night watch) and very windy.

The Ultimate Science Camp II

Article posted January 27, 2012 at 03:39 PM GMT • comment • Reads 14

Another entertaining activity was Scooby’s stories. Scooby told them to us in the morning, and used different voices to make it more fun. It was impressive when the characters started

talking really fast and interrupting each other. Scooby was the only person saying the story, after all! Scooby also acts out some parts. Once, he showed us in slow motion what he looked like running and crashing into Barney (a tree). That was funny. The second story was all about Scooby driving to Santa-ma-Cruz and trying to hide from Barney, ending with Scooby finding out about Barney’s evil plans to take over the world. That was my favorite story. Barney was super strong too, making the stories fun, because when Scooby rows into the middle of the ocean trying to get away, Barney swims over and catches up real fast. All the stories are on bananaslugs.net, I’ve already seen most of them.

Finally, I hiked up the creek during field class. It was really fun because there were fallen trees, big boulders, and and skinny ledges we had to walk over. It was like going through a huge and risky obstacle course. We went in single-file, of course. Sometimes we would cross the river, jumping from stone to stone. It was fun because there was always the risk of falling into the river. All the while we were climbing upward. It was the best and a little tiring, but I was having too much fun too notice.

Science camp was definitely an important thing in my life, since I’ve never been away from home alone for that long. The campfire, Scooby’s stories, and the creek were very bright highlights in science camp, and I’ll probably remember them for a long time.

The Ultimate Science Camp I

Article posted January 24, 2012 at 03:42 PM GMT • comment • Reads 18

Science Camp had a lot of wonderful activities, but there were three things that I favoured the most. I think the campfire,  Scooby’s stories, and hiking up the creek were best.

One fun, night time activity was the campfire. The campfire had a trail mix skit, Gigantic ship skit, an 螢火 dance and song, a “What Happens if you Forget your Tent While Camping” skit(don’t need)and a really contagious sicknesses skit. I found the trail mix skit the most amusing, because it was performed by the teachers.  Everyone who knew my teacher laughed when he had to scream like a little girl and call for the ambulance in a high-pitched voice. Not only that, but the teachers had to perform it in different modes (for example, cowboy mode). For example, cowboy mode. The robot mode was best in my opinion, because after a teacher fell and pretended to be dead, my teacher is supposed to call for the ambulance. Instead, he went crazy. He started jumping around the campfire flapping his arms like nuts and saying pi (I think) in a robotic voice. I only heard him say,”3.1415”before people started laughing. The Gigantic ship skit was performed by two field instructors. They were the captain and first mate. What made it so funny was that the first mate kept messing up her lines. For example, she said,”The ship is stinking!” instead of ,”The ship is sinking!” We danced 螢火 around the fire in Chinese, so the other schools didn’t understand anything. In the What Happens if you Forget your Tent While Camping skit, mosquitoes come in the night and sting the same dude for three nights in a row, once while he was inside his friends tent! The mosquitoes stung him even while he was inside the tent because they thought he was the person that had slept in there for the last two nights.  For the contagious sicknesses skit, a cabin leader patient waited for the doctor while other people came in to wait with her. It was hilarious because she kept catching their sickness and then healing them!  When the doctor comes, she runs away screaming because she thinks he’s a patient and that she will catch his sickness too!

What Christmas means to Me

Article posted December 15, 2011 at 08:25 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 85

Christmas means a lot of things to me. It can mean that there’s a two-week break from school. Usually, my family stays at home and takes a long rest from school. This year, we are going to Lake Tahoe , although my parents said there may not be any snow. Christmas can mean presents. I like getting surprised by gifts. Santa’s gift is almost always the best present I get. Giving presents is also exciting for me since there’s a deadline of December 25th and that you have a secret you shouldn’t tell the To:___ person about. Christmas can mean that the Christmas tree gets put up. I get to decorate and put it together. It looks pretty at night with all the lights on, ornaments on, and star on. Christmas can mean that neighbors put up lights on their house. Near Christmas, my dad sometimes drives around and lets my sister and me look for houses with lights. One house in our neighborhood always puts up a huge light-up Christmas tree decoration on their roof. It’s so tall that I can see just the tip of it over the trees. Christmas can mean a lot to me, I didn’t even mention the celebrations.
