California Towhee

The California Towhee is a dark brown bird with pale gray underparts. The California Towhee has a few look alikes like the Canyon Towhee and the Abert's Towhee. The Canyon Towhee has a rusty crown and grayer upperparts, and the Abert's Towhee is buffier and has a black area around the bill. The California Towhee is only one of the many California birds such as Ducks, Geese, Swans,  Partridges, Grouse, Turkeys, Old World Quail, New World Quai, Loons, Grebes , Albatrosses, Shearwaters, Petrels, Storm petrels , Tropicbirds and Gannets Pelicans.

Stamp act

Stamp Act of 1765

The Stamp Act 1765 (short title Duties in American Colonies Act 1765; 5 George III, c. 12) was a direct tax imposed by the British Parliament specifically on the colonies of British America. The act required that many printed materials in the colonies be produced onstamped paper produced in London, carrying an embossed revenue stamp.[1][2] These printed materials were legal documents, magazines, newspapers and many other types of paper used throughout the colonies. Like previous taxes, the stamp tax had to be paid in valid British currency, not in colonial paper money.[3] The purpose of the tax was to help pay for troops stationed in North America after the British victory in the Seven Years' War. The British government felt that the colonies were the primary beneficiaries of this military presence, and should pay at least a portion of the expense.

The Stamp Act met great resistance in the colonies. The colonies sent no representatives to Parliament, and therefore had no influence over what taxes were raised, how they were levied, or how they would be spent. Many colonists considered it a violation of their rights as Englishmen to be taxed without their consent—consent that only the colonial legislatures could grant. Colonial assemblies sent petitions and protests. The Stamp Act Congress held in New York City, reflecting the first significant joint colonial response to any British measure, also petitioned Parliament and the King. Local protest groups, led by colonial merchants and landowners, established connections through correspondence that created a loose coalition that extended from New England to Georgia. Protests and demonstrations initiated by theSons of Liberty often turned violent and destructive as the masses became involved. Very soon all stamp tax distributors were intimidated into resigning their commissions, and the tax was never effectively collected.[4]

Opposition to the Stamp Act was not limited to the colonies. British merchants and manufacturers, whose exports to the colonies were threatened by colonial economic problems exacerbated by the tax, also pressured Parliament. The Act was repealed on March 18, 1766 as a matter of expedience, but Parliament affirmed its power to legislate for the colonies “in all cases whatsoever” by also passing theDeclaratory Act. This incident increased the colonists' concerns about the intent of the British Parliament that helped the growing movement that became the American Revolution.[5][6]

Boston tea party

Boston Tea Party

The Boston Tea Party was a direct action by colonists in Boston, a town in the British colony of Massachusetts, against the British government and the monopolistic East India Company that controlled all the tea imported into the colonies. On December 16, 1773, after officials in Boston refused to return three shiploads of taxed tea to Britain, a group of colonists boarded the ships and destroyed the tea by throwing it into Boston Harbor. The incident remains an iconic event of American history, and other political protests often refer to it.

The Tea Party was the culmination of a resistance movement throughout British America against the Tea Act, which had been passed by the British Parliament in 1773. Colonists objected to the Tea Act for a variety of reasons, especially because they believed that it violated their right to be taxed only by their own elected representatives. Protesters had successfully prevented the unloading of taxed tea in three other colonies, but in Boston, embattled Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson refused to allow the tea to be returned to Britain. He apparently did not expect that the protestors would choose to destroy the tea rather than concede the authority of a legislature in which they were not directly represented.

The Boston Tea Party was a key event in the growth of the American Revolution. Parliament responded in 1774 with the Coercive Acts, which, among other provisions, closed Boston's commerce until the British East India Company had been repaid for the destroyed tea. Colonists in turn responded to the Coercive Acts with additional acts of protest, and by convening the First Continental Congress, which petitioned the British monarch for repeal of the acts and coordinated colonial resistance to them. The crisis escalated, and the American Revolutionary Warbegan near Boston in 1775.

Television

Article posted March 23, 2012 at 03:45 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 51

Television is a good way to entertain people; however it teaches you many bad things that will affect you when you grow older.

First of all, watching television won’t help you in anything that will happen to you in your future.  When you watch television, all it does is ruin your posture because you will be in an awkward position for a long time, and that affects your alignment. If you have an interview for a job you might fail because you will be thinking too much about watching the next episode of Star Wars or something. If you watch too much television you will never succeed in life because when you stare at the television for a long time, in the end you would eventually get addicted, and forget to study.  Whenever anyone does that, it never leads them to anywhere good.

Secondly, while you are watching television you could be studying for an up- coming test. When you watch any television show instead of studying for something that is important, all it proves is that you will grow up to be someone that sits in front of the television all day long. When you watch television before a test, you will probably get an F, because instead of studying you were watching television.  When that happens, you won’t be able to study the next morning, so you won’t even know what the test was on.  If you watch too much television, then you will end up with a lot of bad grades. Also, your parents would have to open a report card filled with terrible grades, and you will probably get grounded because your mom and dad work so hard and you have disappointed them.

Finally, television will teach you many bad things like swear words. Many people learn swear words from the television and it ends up getting them in trouble. Even kids shows can teach you bad things, and if you learn too many bad things, you will grow up to be a mean and nasty criminal.

In conclusion, watching television only teaches you bad things and causes you to get addicted to watching it. Without the television, you won’t have to worry about any bad grades or things like that. So let’s help ourselves and stop watching to much television!

Boston Massacare

Boston Massacare

The Boston Massacre, called The Incident on King Street by the British, was an incident on March 5, 1770, in which British Army soldiers killed five civilian men. British troops had been stationed in Boston, capital of  Provdince of Massachusetts Bay, since 1768 in order to protect and support crown-appointed colonial officials attempting to enforce unpopular Parliamentary legislation. Amid ongoing tense relations between the population and the soldiers, a mob formed around a British sentry, who was subjected to verbal abuse and harassment. He was eventually supported by a small company of troops, who were subjected to verbal threats and thrown objects. They fired into the crowd, apparently without orders, instantly killing three people and wounding others. Two more people died later of wounds sustained in the incident.

The crowd eventually dispersed after Acting Governor Thomas Hutchinson promised an inquiry, but reformed the next day, prompting the withdrawal of the troops to Castle Island. Eight soldiers, one officer, and four civilians were arrested and charged with murder. Defended by Patriot lawyer John Adams, six of the soldiers were acquitted, while the other two were convicted of man slaughter and given reduced sentences. Depictions, reports, and propaganda about the event, notably the colored engraving produced by Paul Revere (shown at right), further heightened tensions throughout the Thirteen Colonies. The event is widely viewed as foreshadowing the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War five years later.

Zee Eye

These is the story and it happened to me a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away he he wrong story. Just Yesterday I awoke and my head really hurt and so I tried to eat something but I was not hungry so I went back to bed to see if I could get any better and I did and I asked my mom if I could go to school and she was not so sure about that but I begged her and finally she said yes and at about 10 O`clock I got to school. Then I was okay until about 12:30 and that was when the whole thing started!!! Well this is what happened right when we were lining up for lunch I felt really weird and so I asked Mr. Garrison if I could go to the office so he said okay. Then I went out and as soon as I stepped out everything became in piccolos then all of the sudden I made a direct U turn and I fainted it was almost like a dream but it was real. The first thing I heard was from Mr. Garrison he said woo Matthew I was still thinking it was a dream so I did not really say anything back then I heard Brandon he asked Mr. Garrison if he should go and tell the office Mr. Garrison said yes so he went to the office and in a few minutes I saw Ms. Dian Kaufman coming and I tried again to go to the office right next to the hot lunch line I did not feel well and I fainted again then first before I fainted the second time Ms. Dian Kaufman said in the radio call Matthew’s mom then after I fainted again she yelled call 911 so then I told them that when I stood up everything became into piccolos so they got a wheel chair so then they were now able to get me into the office very shortly the fire fighters were here they started to do all these weird things on me then they said they were going to take my blood sugar they asked me if I had a problem with that but at that point I really did not care what they did on me. So they started they started by using some sort of baby wipe thing t wipe my hand and then they used this flick needle thing and they hit my finger then blood came out and they put in this small little machine thing and the machine said 62 I asked them what that meant and he said it was okay but they were looking for a bigger number, he asked my mom if she wanted him to take me with the ambulance but my mom said no. Then my mom had to sign some paper and they helped me to the car, and I got my backpack sent to me and the Pie Club gave me a letter that a lot of kids signed. Then I went home and about 30 minutes later I came back to school because I carpool so we picked the boy then we stopped in the GLC to tell them I was not coming to musical rehearsal. Then I started my long sleep and I slept for 15 hours. About 5 hours in my dad came to see how I looked that was when the black eye stood out and it kind of hurt when I sleep on it then because I was a little hungry I asked my dad if he could get me something to eat and I got cheese and crackers. Then I went back to sleep but i felt something on my leg and it was something that the fire fighters put on to do something I was surprised he forgot to take it of but then I thought again and maybe he left it on so I told my dad and he just helped me take it off and I went back to bed. then I woke up the next morning and I wanted to go to school, so I asked my mom and she said I don not want you to go to school if you are not feeling well so I told my mom I was going to be fine so she brought me to school.

Age of Sail VS. Science Camp

Article posted February 1, 2012 at 04:49 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 33

Age of Sail VS. Science Camp

Age of sail and science camp gave me a lot of joyful memories,  but also some sad memories. There were also similarities and differences between the two epic field trips.

There are lots of similarities, although there are more differences,  you still would not want to forget the similarities. One of the few similarities are sleeping. We got to sleepover at Age of Sail and Science Camp. Another similarity is that in both field trip they separated us in groups. My cabin group at Science camp was the Raccoons and my Age of Sail group name was Bosun Crew. Another similarity was that we had bunks.

There are many differences and here are a few. At Science Camp we were served great food, in fact the food was so good it made me felt like I was in a five-star hotel. The food was so good, it went from tacos to brownies it... and it couldn't get any better.  At Age of Sail we also had food. For dinner we all ate this lobscouse stew with corn bread and for breakfast we ate corn bread and hot chocolate.  After we left the Balclutha, we were lucky and we earned a trip to McDonald's. I chose and ate a breakfast burrito.  At Science camp was heavenly we had nice, closed screen door rooms with a warm heater.  The bad thing about the sleeping situation was that we slept on these uncomfortable mattresses and wooden bunks. And at Age of Sail we were in a cabin with a sleeping bag, on also on a wooden bunk and nothing but a sleeping bag(no mattresses). Nicole was continuously yelling “I can’t go to sleep” for at least 30 minutes straight.  Then everybody couldn’t sleep until she stopped. Then at 5:30 the galley awoke us by yelling  “ wake up you sleeping dogs!”  We had 2 minutes to get ready for breakfeast at 6.. At science Camp we got to choose Nature names, my Nature Name was Unicorn, and at Age of Sail they all had very dumb names like Seabiscuit and Sir for a girl;.  All the mates were girls in a boy’s clothes. and worst of all we had to be serious when we said it. And at Age of Sail everyone was so serious they told the tall sailors A.K.A parents that all they could say or yell was avast. At Science Camp it was 3 regular rules and have fun, the only thing that was “FUN” was the little break were we learned how sailors got there entertainment its called this jig so what you do for the jig was you sing a song and you clap then you have people jumping to the beat like total idiots( do not write retard).  At Age of Sail we had night patrol and it was really dumb because if you are in the middle of the ocean, fine, but we were hooked to the shore and we were standing there in the middle of the night doing nothing.  At the place I was positioned  I got to see the huge Ghirardelli sign. At Science camp we had fun night programs. One of the night programs were astronomy night and I got to see Jupiter, believe me that was a lot cooler then looking at a Ghirardelli sign all night.

Comparing Age of Sail and Science Camp is really challenging. Age of Sail and Science camp have a lot of differences and few similarities but that might just tell us how hard and harsh it was in the 1850’s.

What do the holidays mean to me ?

I love the holidays. They are so fun. I always love the holidays because  on the holidays we get a really long break. I love the holidays because during the holidays we have time to go see family and friends. I sometimes go to Florida to see my grandparents. When we go we use to go out on my grandpa`s boat because we like to go fishing. However my grandpa has got to the age, were it is hard for him to get in and out of his boat so he does not use it as often. One time we just finished fishing and a fisherman had a big fish and he gave it to us. He was so nice. I remember those nights were my grandpa would sit out on the porch and clean the fish. It was not a easy job. This year we will go skiing in the first time since I was 5 years old. The last time I went skiing, I was still learning what my family calls pizza and french fries. The reason my family calls it pizza and french fries is because pizza looks like a V with your skies and french fries looks like a double L. I am really looking forward to the holidays!

MEYERHOLZ BULLDOGS
VS.

FARIA FALCONS

Bulldogs have been competing in football contests ever since the inception of the Meyerholz football program. Meyerholz has had many schools firsts against the Falcons including a first touchdown from a kick return and our first victory against Faria.
The most exiting moment in Meyerholz football came at Faria. On fourth down in the fourth quarter of the last game of the season Meyerholz quarterback Micheal Shieh connected with receiver Brian Glasper on a twenty-yard game winning touchdown.
Faria is traditionally a quick, sometimes and today`s game promises to continue that exciting tradition.

Age of Sail was very fun, but there were some things that could have been even better. I was in the Boatswain Crew and I got to do lots of coiling rope projects with my crew. I made a bet with Ms. Lin that I wouldn’t get in trouble. But we did get in trouble so my punishment was to write two hundred points on the reading assignment. Even though I did lose the bet, Age of Sail was very fun. One of the fun things that we did were going to Ghiradelli Square. First we got free samples while we were walking around we saw so much chocolate. We finally got out of the Ghiradelli shop which I was really happy about because looking at all the chocolate was making me hungry. There was a singer there singing songs that he made up. Then, he sang one song that was written by someone else. The song was called Holly-lu-ya. Then we walked on a pier and saw Alcatraz. There were a few people fishing which was very dumb cause there was no luck. I know that these things may be a little of topic but it was fun. Then we went to our stuff and went to the ship. As soon as we got on the ship we were greeted by Mister Tac she was the second mate and was very nice she taught us what was what and where we were going to sleep then we put all of our things in a few bunks we were separated by crew and we were told to report to all hands a places were you go to get the next order.

to be continued...
