HATTIE’S BIRTHDAY BOX The empty box helps Hattie get through hard times because the box is full of hope. To begin the box is very special to her because her brother made it for her and put her initials on the box. The initials on the box were HMcB. When it was his birthday his sister Hattie was coming to see him. It was his 100thbiirthday party.
He was very scared that his sister Hattie was coming because he has not seen her for a long time. Also he was scared that she would be mad at him for not getting her anything for her wedding day.
When his sister arrived she explained how the boxed helped her through tough times. For example the box brings her hope so when her son died and when the crops caught on fire their neighbors were being neighborly and gave them some of their food, she didn’t need to open the box. She finally opened the box when she saw her brother on his 100th Birthday. The box was empty but it always brought her hope. The man was surprised and happy because she wasn’t mad at him for not getting her a wedding gift.
