Pretties

Article posted March 29, 2012 at 02:34 PM GMT • comment (3) • Reads 659

When I read the book Pretties by Scott Westerfield the theme of perseverance stood out. All throughout the book all kinds of obstacles were being thrown at the main character, Tally. Tally had found out a huge secret of where she lived and she had to expose it. Well while Tally tries to expose the secret and cure it other people are trying to do the exact opposite. The people Tally are avoiding have had their senses altered to where they have the best senses you have seen. Although Tally knows the odds are in their favor she doesn’t give up and she perseveres. All of the obstacles in the book and of how Tally reacts to them represent perseverance strongly.

Scotland Wars and Rulers

I researched about Scotland wars and rulers. I learned that Robert the Bruce was the king of Scotland and he gained Scotland its independence. I also learned that he killed John Comyn. He killed John Comyn right before the Battle of Methven. The Battle of Methven was in between Scotland and England.  England won this battle. I also learned about the battle of Bannockburn. This was in between England and Scotland. Scotland won this battle in 1314 and they gained there independence,

Pressure

Article posted January 24, 2012 at 07:02 PM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 234

In a lot of life situations people have gone through pressure. Sometimes it is a pressure on a group of people, but sometimes it is just one person that is getting pressured. It might occur at a baseball game when it is there turn to hit the ball. When they go up to bat, they must be thinking about what’s going to happen. They are usually worried that they will let down their team. Sometimes it might not be a baseball game when this occurs, but when it does occur that person is usually focused on pleasing the people around them. There have been a lot of situations in daily life where a lot of people are depending on one person.

Where is Prejudice

Where is Prejudice?

Prejudice can be found pretty much anywhere today. It can happen when you are at school or at work. Sometimes people can be prejudice by giving other people advantages just because of what they look like. Prejudice may happen when you want to get a promotion and it is given to someone younger, just because they are younger. Prejudice can be against one single person or a big group of people. Prejudice is everywhere today and even the smallest incident can really hurt someone’s feelings.

My Goals

Article posted January 6, 2012 at 03:29 PM GMT • comment (1) • Reads 232

My Goals

This year I have made myself 3 new goals. I have made 1 for Academics, 1 for my Religion, and 1 for my Social life. This semester in Language Arts I am setting a goal to make it to at least 6 help sessions in the morning. I am going to do this by making sure I got to sleep early whenever I have a help session the next morning. I will also make sure to get up early in the morning, so I can make it to school on time. I plan to meet this goal by the end of my 6th grade year. Another one of my goals is to read the book of Genesis. I am going to read during school and a lot more after school to achieve this. I plan to finish Genesis in 2 months. My last goal is to help my mom around the house. I am going to get in the habit of sweeping and feeding our pets whenever I get home. I plan to get in the habit of doing this in 1 month. I plan to finish all of my 3 goals by the end of the school year, but hopefully sooner!

The Last Bandit of Ren (without names)

The Last Bandit of Ren

By: People

Preface

Why do people lie? Just because of one extravagant lie all of my comrades got put in jail for something that we didn’t do. I would rather be stuck in jail with them being held captive, instead of out here worried about them. Their verdict has not been decided, but everyone is sure that it is death. The only person that can prove we are innocent is hidden in a land far away.

Lately, I have been unraveling what happened and how they framed us. I have seen evil people do evil things. I think I know where the key to proving we are innocent is, but if I am wrong, it could be the death of me. My comrades have been charged with taking and killing princess Saphira. Though, I think I know where she is.

Chapter 1

Saphira was looking out of her window at a wide expanse of featureless plains. She sat there for a long while waiting for the sun to set. After she watched the sun set, she turned to go back into her room. Right before she closed her window shutters, an eagle flew up to her window and hopped inside. He dropped a piece of paper wrapped in silver cloth on her bedroom floor. She reached down and opened the parcel. Inside, it said this…

Dear Saphira,

I hope you get this message, and I hope that this is really you. If it is, I want you to know a few things. Sadly, before I can tell you, you need to write back and tell me what you remember. So I can know this is really you.

                                                                                    With Love,

                                                                                    Your Friend

Saphira rushed to her desk to get a stylus and a pot of ink. She looked around for something to write on. On the corner of her bed, she saw a small piece of parchment. She wrote back,

Dear Friend,

All I know is that some strange person locked me up in this tower. I know they must care for me a little because there is food when I wake up. So if you are kind enough will you help me?

Also, who are you?

                                                            From,

Saphira

She grabbed the piece of silver cloth and wrapped it  around her message. She then took a piece of twine and tied it to the eagle’s talon. Then, she motioned for the eagle to leave her. She lingered at her window, watching the eagle fly away.

She fell onto her bed exhausted from the long day. She then quickly fell asleep and started to dream.

I was walking in a strange room filled with people who seem to care about me. The room was filled with very important looking people who wore invaluable jewels and extravagant clothes. I walked to a back patio with a gorgeous view of a forest. Someone walked up behind me and told me not to say a word. Then, I felt this huge pain in my head and blackness overtook me.

Saphira woke up sweating from her dream. She felt stifled by her surroundings and had wished that she were still sleeping. She got up and went to her window where her food usually was, but was shocked to find nothing there. One of the most vital things in living was gone from her life. She went back to her bed and started weeping. She was being held captive in a lofty tower and now she has no food. She walked back over to her window and thought about jumping from the balcony. She thought about the long plummet and decided that starving would be a better way to die.

All of a sudden, a huge metallic clank came from behind her. She looked around and saw a scary grappling hook. She ran inside and hid in her corner, terrified. She looked and saw a strange man in front of her window wearing a black mask.

“Who are you?” she asked, “ Why are you wearing a mask? Are you the strange man sending me the messages?”

“ Calm down. I not here to hurt you,” he said in a reassuring voice, “ I am here to help you.”

Chapter 2

“Why are you here?” Saphira asked, still terrified.

“To help you. Follow me and we can get out of here.” He replied.

“How are we to escape?” asked Saphira, now marginally curious.

“I said, just follow me and hold my hand.” He said as he reached out his hand for her to grab.

Saphira took his hand and stood up slowly. He led her over to the window and then jumped out of it. As he pulled Saphira with him she screamed. He pulled her closer so she would not fall and they began their journey down the lofty tower. She then realized that he might be meaning to put her in jeopardy, to kill her. She disregarded that thought once they reached the ground safely.

            “Scared?” he asked kindly.

“Yes! You almost killed me. What were you think-,” she said before he cut her off

“Well, are you safe now?” he said.

“I think so.” She said quietly because she could feel that she could trust him.

“Come on we have to begin our expedition. You are going to accompany whether you like it or not, because you are my proof.” He said sternly.

“You can’t force me to do anything! I will only go if you tell me my story and if you take your mask off.” She argued.

“I will tell you my story, but you can’t know what I look like.” He said reluctantly. “ You are princess Saphira of the country of Ren. You were supposed to be married to Prince Nikolas. He fell in love with your step-sister, Jezebelle. At your bridal shower you were kidnapped and stuck in your tower. Then my comrades were charged with taking and killing you. They assumed you were dead since no one has seen you in 6 months. Anyways they locked you in the tower so they could be wed.”

            “Oh.” She said astonished.

“Now, come one we have a long perilous journey ahead of us.” He said and started walking.

Chapter 3

It took them 2 days to arrive at the city of Ren. They rested at a convenient inn. Inside there were people doing all kinds of childish antics. It was weird how no one noticed them. They went into the tavern and rested for a little bit. While they were drinking tea, they watched some people get into a skirmish. They left right after the skirmish ended. The barkeep kicked the people in the skirmish out one of them declared their triumph. Saphira thought it was quite entertaining since she had had no human interaction in forever. The man told her to stay underneath the shade of a tree while he went to go get his comrades.

“When will you be back?” she asked.

“When I want to be back.” He answered. “ Now stay put.”

Saphira watched him walk away. She was sitting underneath the tree for a good 15 minutes. She started to worry about him and realized that she had grown closer to him and that she cared for him. She was wondering if he had been detained and was being held captive. She looked up to where he had disappeared and saw at least 10 men walking toward her. One of the people stood out of the group and she realized it was him. He had unveiled his face to her. He had gorgeous green eyes and olive skin. As they got closer, she heard one of the men call him Jason.

“So this is the Princess.” One of the guys said.

“Yep it looks like her.” Said another.

“Come on.” Jason said to her.

“Where are we going?” Saphira asked.

“The Prince and your step-sister are being wed today. We are going to stop it now. I know the way into the castle.” He said to her.

He helped her up and they started walking to the castle. He led her up through a secret corridor. They walked for about 10 minutes, dodging guards and other people.

“Shh,” He said. “We are about to reach the wedding ceremony. You are going to present yourself and tell your story. Then we can handle the rest.”

“Okay.” She said scared and then she started to walk closer to the ceremony. When she got there she heard the pastor say, “If anyone objects with this marriage speak now or forever hold your peace.”

            “I object.” She said sheepishly.

The audience gasped, and all looked at her. She told her story to the king and queen who were sitting on the front row. They were relieved to see her well and alive.

In the end, the Prince and Jezebelle were banished. She ended up marrying Jason and they ruled the kingdom happily. Jason’s comrades got promoted to captains in the royal guard. They all lived happily ever after, except for Nikolas and Jezebelle.

Throughout the story of Linn Yang you saw her overcome her fears. When her and her family first moved to America they were afraid and not sure about their surroundings. Linn was kind of scared of all of the new people she was meeting and of the new things. She had to overcome her fears of using toilets and of trusting people. Throughout the movie Linn learned to trust Prissy. When Linn went to school she was very scared to go and she depended on Prissy to help her. Linn kind of overcame her fear with the help of Prissy. When Linn went to the spelling bee she was at first afraid that if she didn’t win she would not survive. Prissy could not help Linn overcome this fear so Linn had to do it by herself. Linn overcame her fear and she won the spelling bee. Linn at first needed help to overcome her fears but now she can overcome her fears without help.

“Mellissa!” yelled Ashley as she got out of her car. “ I could not wait to see you. I missed you all summer. Where were you, you never answered my texts.”

“Sorry, my mom took my phone away all summer. I had to help my grandmother. She had some problems.” Mellissa replied knowing it was a total lie.

“Oh, ok. Is she all right now? Were you able to help? You know my granddad was a doctor so I could probably get him to figure out what is wrong with her if you want.”

“She is fine now.” Mellissa said wanting her to go away. “I don’t think I will need any of your help. I have to get to class now, but thanks anyway.”

“Ok bye. Well if you need anything you know who to call.” Ashley said in a disappointed tone.

As Ashley walked away Mellissa was so relieved. She thought that she would never leave. All last year, Ashley had dressed like her, talked like her, and even died her hair a dark brown to look like her. Ashley was the weirdest person in the school. Mellissa was the one every one liked. The one everyone wanted to hang out with. Then there was Ashley the weird one. The one with the nasal like voice. The one who everyone hated.

“Mellissa!” called Alyssa. “What were you doing talking to Ashley? You know her reputation. You don’t want to be like that do you? Aren’t you going to tell her that you don’t like her. She has to know where she belongs.”

“She doesn’t mean too, but I mean if you dressed and talked like that you would surely want to change. I mean it is not like she is intentionally sabotaging me. Believe me I think it is annoying to, but I mean I kind of feel bad for her.”

“There is no need to feel bad. Just get over it. She should be the one feeling bad. She has been the one annoying and bugging you. You have not done anything to her. All you have done is avoid her. You haven’t said anything mean.” Alyssa said.

“Yah, I guess your right. She does need to know where her place is. I am in my group and she is in her group. Some groups just don’t mix. Right?” Mellissa questioned.

“Exactly, who are we to worry about her. Come on,  homeroom is about to start.” Alyssa said.

Alyssa and Mellissa walked through the 6th grade hallway. They shared some of their old memories from last year. As they got to the 7th grade hallway they both walked into Mr. Ruel’s homeroom. Mr. Ruel was known for pretty much nothing. No one knew anything special about except for the fact that he was really boring whenever he teaches. Mellissa talked with some of her old friends from last year and met some new ones. Everyone in the class liked Mellissa. Right before the bell rang Ashley came in. Ashley the most annoying person in 7th grade in Mellissa’s homeroom. Mr. Ruel got up and checked everyone off and then said the thing that Mellissa was scared of the most.

“Now class, I know all of you probably want to sit next to your friends and talk, but in my class there are always assigned seats, always. I put all you names in a hat and then pulled them out to see which table you would be at. I am going to put the paper up and feel free to look at it. These seats will start tomorrow.” Mr. Ruel said.

Mellissa got up and went over to the bulletin board. It said…

Table 1: Allyssa, Tom, Max, Jeremy,

Table 2: Mary, Sarah, Katie, Elizabeth

Table 3: Matthew, Jackson, Mason, Maria

Table 4: Mellissa and Ashley

Mellissa thought that she would die. Not only was she in a table with Ashley, but that was the only other person in the group. Mellissa would be pretty much forced to talk to her. The good day turned into a horrible one for Mellissa. The rest of the day followed like homeroom. She found out that she had 4 classes with Ashley. Ashley was overjoyed by it and Mellissa tried to act that way to.

Mellissa walked home with her friend Julie. Julie was her next door neighbor that had the most annoying dogs. Julie was kind of average. She had friends, but was not really popular like Mellissa. The only time Mellissa ever talked to her was when they walked home and even then it was usually silent. As Mellissa walked home she started to get really itchy. More itchy than ever before. She started to notice on her skin little red dots.

“Oh no!” thought Mellissa, “I have the chicken pocks.”

Mellissa hurried her pace so she could get home quicker and tell her mom. Mellissa walked into her house and as usual her mom was sitting at the dinner table reading.

“Mom, I think I have the chicken pocks again.”

“Are you sure, aren’t you only supposed to get them once?” her mom got up and looked at her skin. “Oh you sure do, go ahead and lay down.”

“Ok, do I have to go to school tomorrow?” asked Mellissa hoping for a no.

“Not unless the school wants you to spread this.” Answered her mom.

That night when Mellissa went to bed she slept downstairs. Her mom told her if she slept upstairs the chicken pocks might stay up there and she might catch it again. Mellissa thought it was a silly thought, but obeyed her mom. She enjoyed sleeping downstairs because she could watch T.V. The day was a normal day except for the fact that she got the chicken pocks again. Mellissa went to sleep not knowing that what she thought was chicken pocks wasn’t really chicken pocks.

Chapter 2

Mellissa got up the next morning it seemed like a normal day. She knew something was different because her house was completely silent. Whenever she usually took a step the floor creaked, but this time she didn’t hear a sound. She picked up her pillow and threw it on the ground hoping to hear thump. Nothing happened. Mellissa yelled and she didn’t hear a sound. Apparently someone else heard her though. Her mom came running down the steps.

“What’s wrong.” Asked her mom. Her dad followed her mom with a bat in his hands. Mellissa wasn’t sure what she said, but she thought that she could figure out what she was saying.

“What’s wrong?” her mom asked again. Mellissa understood she could read her lips.

“I am fine thanku.” Mellissa replied no knowing she had slurred the word thanks and you together.

“Ok, you probably need to get ready for school.” Her mom said.

Mellissa nodded being clueless of what her mom said. She ran upstairs and into her room. She looked into her mirror and murmured “What is wrong with you?”

She got dressed as usual. She looked at her clock not remembering that it was 10 minutes slow. She decided she had some time to relax and just lay down. She walked to school with Julie usually. Julie usually came to her house and then they would walk to school from there. Mellissa was happy that her little red dots were gone and that she was not itchy anymore. Julie ran into her room and startled her. The Mellissa remembered that her clock was slow and that Julie usually called her name from the bottom of the steps.

“Why didn’t you come when I called?” asked Julie.

Mellissa had no idea what to say. She had not gotten used to reading people’s mouths. She was about to tell about her hearing, but figured it would just go away. Her mom appeared behind Julie.

“Oh, sorry Julie I forgot to tell you Mellissa has the chicken pocks. She isn’t going to go to school today.” Her mom explained.

“Oh, ok. I hope she gets better!”

Mellissa watched Julie go and figured her mom had told her that she had the chicken pocks. She was afraid that her mom would notice that she didn’t have the chicken pocks and send her to school, but luckily she didn’t. Her mom said goodbye to her and went to work like usual. Right after her mom left she went over to her computer and started to search for rare diseases. She saw something about strange bumps, but it did not seem to match her symptoms. She did not see anything about strange bumps and then lose of hearing though. All Mellissa could do right now was cross her fingers and hope.

Later that day Mellissa went outside to go get the mail. Each month on the second Tuesday people came to clean up their yard. Mellissa ignored like always, but it was a lot easier then normal. She didn’t notice that as she was getting out the mail someone was talking to her. She finally noticed the construction worker talking and just nodded.

Library of the Future

Library of the Future!

By: AH7

I would make the library of the future very easy to use. Whenever you were not sure what exact book you wanted to read but you had an idea of what kind all you had to do was say the keywords and it would show the top results on a computer. Once you looked at the results you would go find them or they wouldn’t show up on the computer screen but come down a shoot for you to look at. That would be in handy whenever you new what book you wanted but just couldn’t find it. So you would say or type in the title or the author and all that have that name or author would come down the shoot. The library would also have every page in a book scanned so you could print the pages you wanted and take it home instead of the book. In order to access the scanned page you wanted you would type in the name of the book, the author(s), and the page numbers. There would be a room with lots of couches where you could read. In the back of the library there would be digital cameras to check out if you needed to record something for a project. Next to the cameras there would be movies and documentaries you could check out and play on your Mac to learn. There would also be many copies of the science and world history books so you could check them out. The library would be amazing in every way you could think. GACS would be known for its library and how flawless it was. That is what I think the library of the future should be.
