In Math this week we will continue to practice determining the volume of rectangular and triangular prisms and will also learn to calculate the surface area of these 3D shapes. We will also be examining front, side and top views of 3D structures.
This week's language will focus on more preparation for EQAO testing with a review of procedural writing, and practice reading comprehension questions and grammar. Don't forget Friday's Social Studies test. A study sheet went home last week but study notes should also be made to help prepare you for the test. Please see your teacher if you need assistance with this.
Homework:

Welcome back after an unexpectedly LONG weekend!
Here is what's happening this week:
- Monday April 15 - gr. 5 Humane Society Visit, gr. 6 - DARE
- Friday April 19 - Earth Day litter clean-up, homework due
This week we will (hopefully) be finishing up our narrative stories/ books for our Reading Buddies and will begin a second narrative. We will also be working on answering comprehension questions effectively after reading a text. We are continuing our focus on fractions in math, comparing, ordering and creating equivalent fractions. This will be leading into work with decimals and percent later in the week. This is a crucial concept for upcoming EQAO testing in May for grade sixes so be sure to come in for extra help if you are having difficulty.
We are currently learning about the Ancient Egyptian culture (gr. 5) and early First Nations people (gr. 6) in Social Studies. Parents, please sign and return Science and Math tests when they come home. Please watch agendas for these items.
Homework for this week:
#1 Copy the following story and fill in each of the blanks with one of the numbers listed so that the story makes sense.
Numbers: 2/5, 0.90, 0.50, 18/10, 0.40. 1/2
Maggie needs $___ for a one-way bus fare to visit her Grandma. In her piggy bank she only has $___, which is ___ of a dollar. She asks her Mom for $___ to make up the difference. Another name for that amount is ___ of a dollar. If Maggie were to return home on the bus as well, she would need a total of ___ of a dollar.
#2 Write your own story that uses 5 fractions or decimals. Make sure that you take out the fractions and decimals in your final copy and list them in a different order so that a classmate can solve it.

- Monday March 25 - Pizza orders due
- Thursday March 28 - DARE program begins
- Thursday March 28 - Independent reading plot line and summary due (this must be completed in class)
- Thursday March 28 - Division fact quiz
- Friday March 29 - Good Friday holiday
- Monday April 1 - Easter Monday holiday
D.A.R.E. begins this week for grade sixes. DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education and is provided to our school by the Puslinch Optimist Club in conjunction with the OPP. Officer Bob will be coming in once a week for 10 weeks to facilitate this program.
We will be working on division in math this week including long division. Continue working on your basic division facts so that you will be more confident with long division. We will also be writing narrative stories in language, focusing on the correct use of quotation marks when writing dialogue. We are also wrapping up our science units on Energy and Electricity. Unit test dates will be announced soon for science and multiplication / division.
Homework for this week:
- Practice your division facts up to 144 / 12.
- A bus company expects to transport 2500 people to a football game. About how many 48-passenger buses do they need? Use estimation to determine the number of buses and show your work. Bonus: Determine the actual number of buses needed to transport the people to the football game.

Welcome Back!
We hope you had a fun and restful March Break. We are looking forward to the arrival of spring and some warmer weather.
Here is what's happening this week:
- Friday, March 22: Earth Hour/Day and French Workshop (a.m.)
- Monday, March 25: pizza orders due
Homework:
- Continuing with our focus of learning basic facts, this week's homework is to work on learning the division facts up to 9 X 9. There will be a quiz on Friday. One way to learn division facts is to write out each "fact family" (e.g. 3 X 6 = 18, 6 X 3 = 18, 18 / 3 = 6, 18 / 6 = 3).
- There are 1776 steps in the CN Tower. The height of each step is 19 cm. About how many cm would you climb if you walked up all the steps in the CN Tower? Use estimation to determine the approximate answer. Show your work.
