Ryan's Camp Recount
I wake up thinking yay, camp! Now, do I have everything I need? Puaranga Learning Centre were going to a place called Camp Relf, or as I prefer to call it Camp Rotoma. We were going from the 7th-11th of March and this time it wasn't one or two classes like we’re used to at Primary, it was the whole Puaranga Learning Centre going (106 students). We were going there to learn survival skills and to find out about nature in the bush.
Kayaking, yay! I was looking forward to kayaking because I love it and the day was boiling like hell. Jason's Dad, John was coming kayaking as well. I looked out on the peaceful lake and I thought this lake is calm, clear and like glass. I couldn’t wait to get on the water. Jason and I were being quite cheeky to John. When he’d had enough he came up to Jason and I and tried to tip us out. Jason and I got our paddles and started splashing John. By the time we had stopped he looked as if he had a shower!!!
It was time for raft building and I was very excited. Matua Del counted down for the two teams to start building, “ 3,2,1 go!“. Both teams raced to get the stuff they needed. Jason, Kody and I just tried our best to get this done and to make a strong enough raft. Us boys were getting frustrated with the girls because they weren’t doing anything. They must have thought they were on vacation and the men had to do all the work! We tested our wacky raft and as soon as everyone hoped on...whoa, whoa, whoa! We needed to take it back in. It wasn’t up to standard. We tied more rubber onto the raft as we strangled it more. We finally finished and placed it in the water. Matua Del got the teams ready for the race then he counted down and both teams were very intense. I looked over to my right and there was a raft full of parents racing the two teams, “3,2,1 go!” The two rafts raced off like a cheetah chasing his prey, leaving group 11 behind. The parents were nudging their way in front and we decided to kick it up a notch. We got really close to them and Kody and I grabbed their raft and chucked them back. We were in the lead, yay. I looked down at the clear water and out of the corner of my eye I saw a bit of the raft falling off. I didn’t bother worrying about it because we were almost at the finish. Oh crap, the rat parents were in the lead. We gave it our all but the parents won by a millisecond. Lucky buggers I thought!
Burma trail, ooh. Most people were quite scared because Matua Del had told everyone that there was a loopy fulla on the run and that he was coming our way. I didn’t believe that. I mean seriously, why would they let us go in the bush if there was a loopy fuller like that? It was time to go in and our group heard heaps of screams. Matua Del was waiting for our group to head in. Kody and I were laughing at stupid things that he was saying like, “I want to fight a little bear” and other things. We were about a quarter of the way through when the chainsaw man revved up his chainsaw and tried to scare us, but he didn’t have a chance in the world of scaring Kody and I! A while later Kody told me to grab Elijah's leg so I would give him the heebie-jeebies. So I took his advice and grabbed his leg. Elijah screamed as if he was a girl and not a hot girl! Finally we’d finished, I felt relieved to see some light.
Oh no, camp concert. Our team hadn’t thought of anything, but I had a trick up my sleeve. Group after group performed and I was thinking of what our group should say. We agreed to do our skit on impersonating Matua Del and I don’t know why, but we made Jamie Matua Del. We needed to make our skit funny so we could keep the crowd alive. It was our turn and I was a tad nervous - thinking would we be spectacular, or would we look like dorks. I wasn’t listening to ‘Matua Del’ and my excuse was my legs hurt. I kept saying, “I miss my Mummy, I miss my kitty and most of all I miss my hot chick!” Matua Del announced the first, second and third place winners. We came second, I was in shock. I was in shock for the rest of the night! That was the best night ever.
I hope Thornton Camp is as much fun as ‘Camp Rotoma’ next year.
