Possums

Granddad and I help keep the forest safe. We like to kill Possums. When we go hunting we need to take lots of equipment. Granddad has a sniper gun he has to take his gun licence with him when we hunt. We also need torches to spot the possums they are usually hiding in the trees. Possums are nocturnal.
We use possum traps they are made of iron. We lay the traps near to where they sleep. The possum runs into the trap the trap catches its leg. If the possum is still alive we knock it on the heed to kill the possums we will use apples to lure the possums if they don’t go into the trap.
Sometimes we stay out overnight. Granddad skins the possums while we are in the forest. He sells the fur to the farms for $10 a skin. Their skins are brown and silver.
There are more than 60 different species of opossum.
There are about 30 million possums in New Zealand, possums have no natural enemies. That is why possum’s numbers increased so fast. The possum is not protected in New Zealand it is a pest. The possum is doing a lot of damage to the native plants animals and birds.
That's why we are helping save our forests from these pesky pests!

Matua and I are with his taiaha. The tongue is called "Te arero". The blade is called "Te ate". The feathers are called "Te awe". The taiaha is used to protect whanau.
