My Reflection on the Great Migration

Article posted December 13, 2012 at 12:42 PM GMT+2 • comment • Reads 166

The African-Americans migrated from the south to the north because: They would get better education and also there were floods in the south so, they couldn’t work anymore. And the whites promised them that they would get treated fairly where as in the south, they were not. Also in the north, workers were leaving to war so the people living there needed more workers and the African-Americans thought they would get a better job there. African-Americans also thought that they would get higher salaries. In the south, the African-Americans probably wanted to vote, but they did not have the right where as in the north they could. But when the African-Americans migrated, not all went as planned: The White people did not treat them fairly; they looked at the African-Americans in disdain and they started to kill and imprison them. Also the whites would not give them jobs so that had to make the African-Americans and the whites to compete for a job.

We talked thoroughly about stereotyping people’s skin color in our class’s morning meeting. And remember: don’t ever in your whole entire life judge a person by his/her skin color.

Kareem Why do we Burp?

Article posted November 13, 2012 at 12:28 PM GMT+2 • comment • Reads 199

Kareem Nov.5, 2012

“Burp!” I say.
“Yuck! That’s disgusting. What does it mean when we do that?” My friend says.
“It means that you have lots of gas that needs to get out and that’s where the burp comes out. When that gas comes out it is forced to get out of the stomach and through the esophagus (which is a tube that connects the throat and stomach together) and out comes the burp.”
“Some causes for burping is indigestion which can make us burp because we eat or drink too fast and this sends extra air to our stomach. Another cause is when you drink through a straw: extra air in and more burps out. And some symptoms for burping are: indigestion, extra gas, and bloating.”
“Is there a cure for burping?” asks my friend.
“Certainly, ginger tea, lemon juice, papaya, yogurt, and caraway seeds”
“Cool! I never knew that! But can you tell…BURP! Wait why did that happen?”
“Oh man! Weren’t you listening all this time!?”
“Yes, but I forgot.”
“You’re turning into an old man!”

Qualities in a Leader

They Say

Dear Mr. President,

Congratulations for being the new president. The reason you became president and everyone voted for you was because you are smart; you make smart choices for the country. You are honest; you don’t lie at all. You listen to everyone’s needs. You provide safety for our beautiful country. What you also provide is shelter for every single person. The education system is much better thanks to you and everyone goes to school because you offered free education to everyone. Something also very important that you always do is; you sacrifice your time for your people. You made a strict law that bans pollution and now the country is beautiful. That is all what you did. And Mr. President to say the truth, you are an outstanding leader; you are always ready to do something good to make our country even better. That is why many people voted for you. Good luck and never change your attitude.

Sincerely,
Your citizen Kareem Yamout. 

My Journey of Blood

October, 16, 2012

“Have you ever heard about an awesome journey about the blood?! Well if not, stay tuned, and you’ll hear the most awesome journey you’ll ever hear in your life.

“I am a deoxygenated drop of blood who wants to get cleaned by the heart.”

“First, I go from the Superior Vena Cava to the right atrium. Then I knock on the right atrium and it opens.

“This is the Right Atrium. AHHHHHHHH! I’m getting pushed into the Tricuspid Valve. It feels like a slide! Now I’m in the Right Ventricle and now it pushes me into the pulmonary artery… AH AH AH AHHHHHHH=http://! Where am I?”

“Oh! I’m in the pulmonary artery. It’s the only artery that carries deoxygenated blood. It carries us to the lungs which takes the carbon dioxide out of us.”

“Oh! Hey I see teeth! Am I going out?? Oh wait I feel fresh bye bye carbon dioxide! I’m going back in? I’m going back in by the pulmonary vein .But where? Oh!! To the left atrium and…… AH AH AH AHHHHHHH I’m going through the mitral valve. Now I’m in the left ventricle. Oh I see something big! The aorta! I’m going in it. Now I get pumped to the cells to give them nutrients and oxygen. That’s my journey.

And oh my god! This all happens in one minute!? Noooooo I do this 60 times in an hour!? It’s tiring!!

If Only They Could Speak

If Only They Could Speak

I am a little doll, who is owned by a crazy two-year-old girl named Suzy, and UKH! I hate her. So keep reading and you’ll hear about my horrendous life.

My daily life would be something like this; first, Suzy gets woken up by her nanny in the morning then she has her potty training and she takes me with her, and boy! I hope that I never smell a smell that is so disgusting like this one! I feel like fainting! And I have to go through that every day! After that, she looks up at me and says, “hou lo rulfy.” Which means something like: “You’re so fluffy that I can just rip you into pieces and sleep in your fluffiness!” and now I am left with one arm, one leg, one ear, footless, and hairless! And all the fluffiness that she took out of me is now in her villainous hands! After all that torture; the good part comes; Suzy goes to school and leaves me in the house alone! I get to sleep, run around, and watch cartoons!!! But there is also one part I don’t really like about that; it only lasts five hours.

Now comes the worst part of the day, when Suzy comes home with her friend Anny who also brings tortured dolls and they start a tea party. This is definitely the worst part of the day! So, Anny and Suzy get up and get five plastic cups one for me, two for Anny’s dolls, and two for them and they fill them up with disgusting tap water. And then, they dress us up with terrible dresses and comb my bald hair. After that, we start drinking the “tea “and after they’re done, they start talking baby talk for about two hours. But here’s my question: How can they stay talking for that long? Later, after all that talk Anny leaves the house and it would be time for Suzy’s bedtime. But I can’t sleep with Suzy because I feel like it is raining and I don’t have an umbrella but it’s worse than rain it’s Suzy’s drool!!! And not only that, Suzy snorts as if I were sleeping next to a pig.

Oh well! That’s my terrible daily life and I just can’t wait for Suzy to get old, maybe she’ll donate me to someone who cares about me………………. or maybe not.

Deir Al Qamar

Dier Al Qamar

Have you ever been on an awesome overnight in the mountains with all your friends! Well if not, keep reading this writing piece to know all about my awesome and tiring adventure!

When we got there, we ate a delicious snack. After the snack, we had some time to talk to our friends. Later, we sat down all together and coach Wissam taught us how to build our tents. The instructions took a long time and seemed very easy to build the tent. But when we were trying to collect the pieces together and build the tent, it was very puzzling. But in the end, Khaled and I got how to do it. So after, we had free time and I played hide and seek. It was really fun. Then we had the hike my favorite activity!

The hike was two hours and it was tiring and it hurt. There were spikes and thorns everywhere they hurt a lot, but why I liked the hike was because we were out with nature doing sports. After that, we had time to rest. Khaled and I sat and chatted. Later, we did activities like archery, blocks, and walking on a thin rope. My favorite game was blocks because it made us work together and cooperating. Then, we had dinner it was Shish-Taouk but I only ate homos and it was yummy! Later we went to the campfire and coach Wissam told us about coach Andrew’s adventure together in the wilderness of the Barouk Mountains. Mr. Andrew got stuck in a hole surrounded by wild boars and coach Wissam saved him. After that adventurous story we went to our tents and tried to sleep. But we couldn’t sleep at all because we were sleeping in sleeping bags and we’re not used to sleeping in them. And also because Fairouz music was playing all night on loud speakers! And boy, that made me go to sleep at 1:00 A.M. I was exhausted like never before but finally, I went to sleep.

The next morning, we packed all our clothes and then we had breakfast, we had manoushe, then we dismantled our tents back and played for a little while and then we took the bus and went back home. It was a great trip I hope I have another field trip like it very soon. 

Today I’m going to write a small article about tomorrow’s overnight fieldtrip. What I think will happen tomorrow is that I’m going to have lots of fun with my friends, have fun in nature and sleep in tents. And much more importantly experience new facts and learn about plants, trees, and nature.
