Endless worksheets are not only boring, but also lack the creativity kids need in showing their knowledge. Students have come up with many ways to provide evidence with regard to their learning. A few of our favorites have been writing lesson plans and teaching other classes, making posters, writing a skit, and writing and recording a song or rap. In this video, one student raps to show what he knows about number line fractions! Article posted April 1, 2015 at 12:43 PM GMT • comment • Reads 327

Below is a video documenting students' answers to three questions we asked them about their experience in third grade this year. Article posted March 26, 2015 at 01:09 PM GMT • comment • Reads 120

They set a goal of collecting 500 articles of clothing to help kids in need. Recently, we completed our project, surpassing our goal and collecting 537 items to donate. The clothing will fly with a volunteer of the organization in early April where it will be delivered to the children in need. The video below documents the completion of our project! We have been talking a lot about good qualities that people can possess and as a school, have chosen to address one each month. Today students talked about perseverance: what is means and how we can show perseverance in our every day lives, both at school and at home. We heard some great stories about mental toughness and self-discipline from real people around the world. Our favorite was the story of Great Britain's 400m runner Derek Redmond, whose hamstring snapped during his event but was determined to finish the race at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games. Keep the conversation going and reference your child's perseverance in at home conversations and activities! Article posted November 19, 2014 at 06:21 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1835

Students have settled into a wonderful routine and have made their classroom feel like our home away from home! This week, we spent a lot of time working on fostering independence with literacy tasks. Our focus has been on read to self and read to someone. We are working on building our stamina and students have already successfully reached up to 16 minutes of independent literacy activities!

We also began working with our first capacity matrix of the year, practicing keeping track of our own learning. Students worked together on our 'classroom routines' matrix and are working on things like brainstorming and problem-solving independently.

Below are a few pictures from our classroom this week!

This week students had a great time getting to know their other teachers and learning about the parts of speech at the same time! Students rotated throughout our team classes to learn about verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, and pronouns. As a culminating activity, students put on a grammatical fashion show! Using a template, they had to use all of the different parts of speech to write about what their partner was wearing, and how they were making their way down the runway! Students had a wonderful time and we even got to enjoy a celebratory dace party after our show was complete...what a great way to end the week! Below are a few pictures and short clips of the fun we had today! Enjoy!
