Today we used the app Tellagami to record what we learned this week! Tellagami is an app that lets you create an avatar and then type or record to give your avatar speech. Today, students recorded a few favorite things they learned this week! we decided to use this as a newsletter, so we then generated a QR code that links to each 'gami'. Students will take home the QR code for parents to scan, so they can hear about what we learned this week! Here is one example:

Over the past couple of weeks, we have been reading the novel "The BFG" as a class. Today, we read the chapter titled, "Frobscottle and Whizpoppers"! Frobscottle is a wonderful, green, fizzy drink that the BFG drinks while at his home in Giant Country. The other main character, Sophie very much liked Frobscottle, too, so we thought we would give it a try! Here are a few pictures of our first encounter with the BFG's favorite drink, Frobscottle!

Today we were lucky enough to "travel" to California to learn about cotton! Earlier in the trimester, we learned about slave labor and the very important crop, cotton. We talked about Eli Whitney and his invention, the cotton gin, and how that increased the need for slave labor. Today, we were lucky enough to see a modern day gin and were able to watch the process of how cotton goes from farm to fabric! Our favorite part, though, was picking seeds from our very own cotton samples sent straight to us from California! Here are a few pictures of our field trip--a video is soon to be posted, too!

Today we were lucky enough to have a fourth-grader in our district come into our classroom and teach us more about the famous Underground Railroad conductor, Harriet Tubman! Ava has been studying Harriet Tubman in her class and recently wrote an outstanding report about her life. She read her report to us, we took a quiz, and then made our very own Harriet Tubman flip books! We learned so much and had lots of fun learning from an older peer! Here are some photos from this wonderful lesson!

This is a video documenting how we make learning transparent in our second-grade classroom. When students know what they need to know and learn, both engagement and success increase. This video outlines some ways we make sure we know what we are responsible for as learners including the set up of our classroom and how we begin each lesson!

Today we learned all about HOW our pencils will travel from Maine to Alabama. Students worked together to package, tape, and label our boxes that will be mailed to Alabama this week. We spent time discussing how goods travel from one place to another and students predicted our pencils would travel by "eighteen-wheeler" to Alabama!

Stuents have been working since September to complete this year's service project. Second-graders chose to collect pencils through the national organization "The Pencil Project" to donate to a school in need. In September, students set a goal of collecting 1,000 boxes of pencils to send to an elementary school in Alabama. Four months later, after lots of hard work and help from others, they have collected nearly 10,000 pencils! Students attending Chisholm Elementary School in Montgomery, Alabama will be receiving the pencils next month. Chisholm Elementary enrolls 766 students, 98% of whom receive free or reduced hot lunch. We would like to say "THANK YOU" to those who helped us reach our goal and help those in need. Featured is our video documenting the completion of our inspiring project!

On Friday, students spent the day learning about and celebrating Martin Luther King Jr.! Our favorite activity was creating a mural of Martin Luther King and hanging it in the front window of our school. We're proud to show we know about such an important man and what he stood for! Here are some pictures of our day!
