Reader's Response Journal 1. I discovered that the poet(Francis Scott Key)actually experienced this and was a first- hand witness. I was amazed that when the bombs were going off, he was sitting in a building and when the smoke cleared, the first thing he saw was the Flag. This may have occured because the U.S. was such a strong not-yet country that was determined. And the outcome was, that we won.
2. "Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto:' In God is our trust.'" What this passage means is that we fight for what we believe in and if we can't make it through the war, we are in God's hands.
