We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Please join us as we learn Science by exploring our world.

The Force of a Motor

Article posted June 17, 2011 at 06:20 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1892

This has been the best experiment my science class has done this year. What we did was take a motor, 3 batteries, and some wires. Then took those items and put them together on a peg board. Each team got to do this. The experiment was to see how many washers the motor could lift. We attached the washers to the motor with a piece of string and a paper clip. Each team had their own experiment that they had to do with the motor with. My team's was that we had to see if one part of the mort could pull more or less of another part of the moor. But we got a way different thing then we thought... They both lifted the same amount of washers, 10 washers. We had to do the experiment 2 more times to see if that was right and each time they both lifted 10 washers. No more, no less.
The sad thing about this experiment is that it is the very last experiment we will do this year and this is most likely the very last time I will post on this blog till 8th. :(
Well that's all.

Friction

Article posted May 25, 2011 at 06:14 PM GMT • comment (2) • Reads 989

We pulled a wooden block across 5 different surfaces. These were the table top waxed paper, paper towel, fine sandpaper, and coarse sand paper.
The first data we got for lesson 6 is .5N for the table top, .9N for the waxed paper, .6N for the paper towel, 1.6N for the fine sandpaper, and 1.9N for the coarse sandpaper. Then we repeated this but now we did it on the block's side. The last data we got was .5N for the table top, for the waxed paper .5N, 1N for the paper towel, the fine sandpaper 2N, and 2.5N for the coarse sandpaper. The way that friction slows things down is that if there is more surface area on the object that's sliding has the more friction it has. Because of friction objects that are not moving don't go anywhere.

Green STEM Field Trip

Article posted May 18, 2011 at 06:29 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1328

Going on this field trip that the whole 6th grade went to was so much fun. We went to The Pacific Northwest Salmon Center down in Belfair. It was so much fun. But this was not like any other field trip I have ever been on. It was at a farm with chickens, alpacas, goats, and duck. We got to eat clam. They were so good. The we got to play some very fun games. After that we went to the sharing circles. There we talked with other schools about what we were doing in class. Over all it was a very amazing field trip.

How is Chimacum Creek Doing?

Article posted April 11, 2011 at 12:21 AM GMT • comment • Reads 802

Dissoled Oxgen-12.7 *very good

pH- 6.77215 *we need to improve it

Turbidity-207 *bad and we need to set it down

Nirates-1.88 *OK but we culd raise it up a little

Ammonium-0.8 m/L *bad and it need to be lower

Flow Rate-1j *it is good...not to slow and not to fast

Temperature- 50° *the temperature could go down a little

The creek is doing better than other creeks but is not the best creek in the world. The ammounium level it to high but the flow rate is just right.....the nitrats level is to low but the pH level is doing good. A creek is good in ways but can ALWAYS be help a little more.

Video of Chimacum Creek

Article posted March 22, 2011 at 06:24 PM GMT • comment • Reads 941

This is a video that I put together that shows the creek that we study by my school!!! This creek is like the coolest creek in the world. The only problem is that it is polluted. The ammonium level is not good but we can help!!! People in or visiting Chimacum can throw way their trash and not put it in or near the creek. Farmers can not plant their crops close to the creek so when they fertilize the crops the fertilizer does not get into the creek=http:// Thank you for watching this video!!!!

The pictures down below are the pictures my class photographer took. The first photo is a girl waiting to leave the creek then me in the background wait to leave the creek, too. The next picture is me and my friend waiting to go and test the creek. Then, the next picture is me in the class room finding out what the ammonium was. The next picture is just a goofy picture of me. The very last picture is me and some other girls testing the water.

The water levels in Chimacum Creek for this year are not that great. The level that we got at the end of averging all the levelswe got was .8=http:// When the level reaches .6 fish can suffer and die. If people drink water the is affected by ammonium they can get a disease called Hyperammonemia, which affects the lung of people. But in 2002-2005 the levels were better then they are now! We can all help lower ammonium levels by stop throwing trash in the creek. Farmers can help by not planting crops by the creek so that when they fertilize them the fertilizer does not get into the creek=http://!!! If we can all pitch in and help Chimacum Creek the ammonia level will go down=http://!!!
