We have three 6th grade Science classes and two 8th grade Science classes blogging here from the Pacific Northwest in Chimacum, WA! Sixth graders are learning a bit about Mt Saint Helens, environmental science through fresh water ecology, and physical science this year. Eighth graders are learning about life science this year. Living is breathing eating drinking i learned that some plants can't live in some climates while others can and that some things may appear living but just be reacting to a certain elements. Like an experiment we did in class something appeared alive but was just moving because of what it was in and that's what I learned abou what is living.

Living is a breathing, adapting, growing, drinking organism. I learned that some seeds grow better in a different types of waters such as fresh water, salt water and sugar water. i would think most seeds grow better in fresh water but surprisingly the water we had was sugar water and are seeds grew fine. The orbeez we had grew pretty big in the water. everyone else's grew a tiny bit but not a lot.

To me , living means: Is is moving?

Is it breathing?

Does it have eyes?

Is it growing?

Does it depend on anything else to move?

How is it moving?

Living is having cells needing water and sometimes food. what i learned about in my science class about living, are science teacher gave us viles A B C D E and we had to figure out if they were living or not living. A we found out is sand and it is not living, viral B is yeast it is not living as well, C was little red balls and they grew from water and we found out they were exsplodibles and they were not living, and then we had viral D which is living and we found out they were radish seeds, viral E is living they were really small things called sea monkeys, thats how we figured out how or why its living or non living.

There are many living things but these things need characteristics are what makes them living first I'll show you my list on what is living.

1. Flowers

2. Potatoes

3. Bunnies

4. People

5. Trees

6. Cows

7. Dogs

8. Salmon

9. Grass

10. Apples ( not the iPad )

But that's only a handful of living things don't worry there's more. Now here's what's non living.

1. Rocks ( but that doesn't mean you can't keep it as a pet.)

2. Mountains

3. Chairs

4. Minerals

5. Sand

6. Paper ( it's made out of a living thing but isn't living)

7. Houses

8. Tables

9. Peanut butter

10. Bacon ( was living)

In order for something to be living it needs to have theses characteristics.

1. Cells

2. Food

3. Moves with a purpose

4. Responds to danger and/ or attacks prey

5. Breathes air or water

6. Water

7. DNA

If the object doesn't have these characteristics then it isn't living.

This information is what we learned in a lab in class.

The class came up with these characteristics for living thnigns.

It moves.

It grows.

It responds to stimuli.

it has cells.

It easts or gains energy.

It has DNA.

It doesnt have to show all of these just m,ost. the ones I agree with are that is It HAS to have DNA to be alive, And it also has to respond to stimuli or absorb and use energy.

The things that bring all living specimens together is growing by themselves without another specimen directly influencing it. Thats the broad definition of something that is or has very strong capabilities of living. Now to get into the specifics, human beings or if you want to be super snooty, homo sapiens, need food, water and warmth to be able to keep themselves alive. A tree also in some form or another needs water and food but once it is fully grown doesn't need warmth as consistently as a human or a dog or goldfish. This an example of how a living creature has needs that differentiate from another living creature and how they all don't need exhibit all of the same characteristics to be considered living.Yay! I have lost all of my energy writing this.

List of characteristics of living things:

To be alive something must:

Move

Consume energy (food).

Needs Oxygen.

If it's alive it can also die.

Not all Characteristics of living have to be there in the same way.

Something may not really move, but still grows new skin, or cells...etc...

in my opinion living is when something or someone is breathing, reproducing, drink (in anyway possible)water, they eat food too. in ways they move also, see a plant is living but it doesn't move, well that only what we see. in reality plants move everyday! the only way it would move is the way it reproduce. the roots grow in different plants so then in a weird way it is moving, by reproducing. there is one more thing i didn't mention is that when something or someone is living 9/10 chance they grow, growing is one of the main ways to see if something is living. growing is the way the body changes itself from a "baby form" to an "adult form".

Grow and develop

Take in energy (eating, drinking, and photosynthesis)

Eliminate waste

Reproduce

Be made of cells

Respond to their environment (leaving an unsuitable habitat)

Adapt to their environment

Achieve and maintain homeostatus

You may not be able to see all these things happening just at once, but if ALL of them ARE happening, it's living.
