In addition to being posted on the class Edmodo accounts, here are the Week 1 clues for the games (link and embedded). Any emails to the various participants have to be sent through Mrs. B. We are only allowed one yes/no question per team each week.

On occasion, in the computer lab, you are given the chance to “play” FreeRice. It’s a simple way to help otherswhile learning. I decided to follow the thought and donate in another way, too.

On Monday, students were continuing their MAP Testing.Rather than have the early finishers read silently, I decided to give them a “Write the Ending” activity. The black words are provided; the blue are the creative writer's words.
Teacher for a Day
By FN
We were sitting in class one day, waiting for our teacher Miss Rishani. It was getting late.We waited and waited. Some kids were not behaving. They were screaming.I wanted the teacher to get there soon because it was time for my favorite subject, Literacy.Suddenly the principal came into the room.
“Your teacher is out sick today. One of you will have to teach the class,” the principal said. And then, to my surprise, she picked ME!
I went up to the front of the class and sat at my teacher’s desk. Then, I said, “Turn to page 39 in your books, please.” Since the principal was still here everyone listened, but the worst was yet to come. Some children snickered as the principal shut the door.“Here are your worksheets,” I said, less confidently. To my surprise, the kids took them without a word. They wanted the worksheets just to turn them into paper planes! As one plane hit my shaky hand, my brown eyes filled with tears.Did I have the qualities to be a teacher, or not?
Martha, a short, brown-haired girl came up beside me. “Be quiet or you’re staying in for recess” she said calmly to the class. The moment she finished all the kids in the class hushed. We learned and taught till noon.“Good-bye!” I called to the students as they left the class room. All thanks to Martha, I was called a great teacher. Before leaving the room and turning off the lights, I left an apple and a note for the teacher explaining what happened.I also left a lollypop for Martha as thanks.

The Landmark Games 2012 will begin in February. At this point, all you need to do is think about what you think would be a good landmark. You're all studying different countries this year. Perhaps you have learned about an interesting landmark in your research.
Please add a comment to this blog article. Include your name and class section. I will NOT publish your comment, but collect them to share with your teachers. We want to know what landmark you think would be a good one. We will talk about Landmark Games in class, but here is a link that can get you started on your thinking. Try to solve some of last year's landmarks.

Boy, it was short, wasn't it? We got out of school at noon on Dec. 21st. I flew out that same night. Guess who I met in the airport? Guess who was on the same flight I was on from Beirut to Paris? And then, on the airplane, I found another ACS teacher sitting just two rows in front of me. So there we were three ACS teachers; one was heading to England; one was heading to Guadelupe, and one was heading to the US.
I arrived at my mom's house in Indiana in the evening of December 22nd, after three flights (BEY/CDG/JFK/IND). It was fun to have a few days before Christmas to do all my shopping! On Christmas Day, I spent the morning with my mom, and then my sister and I headed to the airport. I had an afternoon flight to catch to California, so I could spend a few days with two of my sons. December 29th at 12:38 AM, I left San Francisco to return to Indiana. There was a little problem in Minneapolis -- the connecting flight to Indianapolis was cancelled, but after a four hour delay, on I went. The last two days I did visiting and packing. And finally, on January 1st, I started my trip back to Beirut, but this time from Indianapolis to Chicago, Abu Dhabi, and arriving in Beirut on January 2nd at 11:30 PM.
It really is a small world. While connecting in Chicago, I ran into Mrs. Crook (an ACS high school teacher) and her children (1st and 5th graders). Actually, going back and forth through lines for this and that, I ran into them three separate times! I forgot to tell you about another small world run in. When I was standing in line in New York to go through security, I saw an ACS 2nd grade teacher; she and her husband were hurrying to their next flight.
So, what did you do during your winter vacation?

All ES teachers and students are registered for the World Education Games. Attached is your child’s individual log-in and password; it works for both games. Online practice is available from now until the actual “Day”. Participating in the competition is not really stressed, but practicing math skills is encouraged.
This site also opens up the world of geography to the children, as they play against students from around the world. Basic information on each country is also provided.
We’ll be accessing the games from school, at times, but certainly are hoping the students will be accessing from home too! Enjoy!!

As you know, our 3, 4, and 5th graders (plus middle school grades) take MAP tests. The scores are given in a RIT number. A wonderful teacher, Mr. Fraser, has made a list of links to games that might just help in improving RIT scores.
Third graders should be aiming for RIT scores between 190 and 200. When you play the games from his site, please try to stay at your level. Enjoy!
