Achilles Heel Facts: Greek Mytholigy.

Article posted June 2, 2011 at 12:16 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 90

Dear Classmates,

I am doing the greek mytholigy Achilles Heel it was on Mrs.HopkinsAchilles' Mother. blog it was number #3. Achilles was best known as the central figure in Homer's Illiad. Some say that without the help of Achilles, the Greeks would have never defeated the Trojans. Achilles was a great war hero that was sometimes known for his fits of rage and revenge. It seems as though his anger was as greatly known as his fits of prowess. Achilles was a half-divine hero, being the son of the sea nymph Thetis and king Peleus of Thessaly.

He was educated by the wise centaur Cheiron and was described as extremely handsome but also very emotional. He was almost immortal since his mother had dipped him into the river Styx as a baby. Holding the child by its heel when putting it in the water, Thetis made Achilles' whole body except the heel immortal. He had a son,Neoptolemus, with the Skyrian princess Deidameia, who met her when he was hidden in the Palace of the king Likomidis on the island on Skyros.

When the war against Troy was ignited by the kidnapping of Helen, Thetis learnt by an oracle that her son would not come back alive if he joined Agamemnon. The oracle had said that he would either die young and glorious, or reach old age in obscurity.

Thetis then send Achilles to Skyros to the king Likomidis and disguise himself as a woman, thus becoming the first known cross-dresser, but unfortunately he was revealed by
Odysseus and forced to join the army against Troy. Odysseus managed to reveal Achilles true identity by dressing as a merchant, then filling a cart with weapons, clothing and perfumes. While the women ran to see the clothes and perfumes, Achilles ran to he weapons. According to another version, Odysseus blew a horn, which made all the women flee except Achilles.

Achilles led a fleet of 50 ships with an army of warriors called the
Myrmidons. When they arrived in Troy, they also conquered 12 cities by the sea and 11 on land. Achilles killed the queen of the Amazons, Penthelisea, but just as she died their eyes met and they both fell desperately in love.

After an argument with king Agamemnon, who had taken Briseis, a beautiful hostage, from Achilles - the hero was so upset that he pulled out of the war.

His abcense from the battle field gave courage to the Trojans, who no longer having to face Achilles, began to gain ground and cause a lot of suffering to the Greeks. In Vain Agamemnon and other Greeks begged him to take part in the battle and they sent gifts and slaves to persuade him to back his decision. But the entreaties from Agamemnon and the other Greeks were all in vain.

Eventually only the entreaties of his closest friend Patroclus made him him retreat and gave him his great armor that it was made by the god Hephaestus. to fool the Trojans, that supposedly was Achilles who took part in the battle. Hector but he understood and the battle that followed killed Patroclus and took its armor. Patroclus managed to trick the Trojans, who thought he was Achilles who took part in the battle. But Hector understood that he was not Achilles and during the battle that followed he killed him and took his armor.

Patroclus was his best friend and when he was killed by the Trojan hero Hector Achilles was totally mortified. Homer describes how Achilles cut off his hair in mourning and lit the funeral pyre. As a revenge, Achilles killed Hector, dragged the body around the city. This fact and the disrespect towards the dead Hector angered the god Apollo who helped the Trojan prince Paris, Helen's kidnapper with Aphrodite's help,  to shot an arrow into Achilles only weak spot: his heel.

Thetis and the Nine Muses attended Achilles funeral. In the underworld Achilles remained a leader, but it was not a happy existence. According to another version, the hero was taken to Elysium by his mother, where he married Helen or Medea. Yet another myth tells us that his shadow asked Polyxene to be present at his funeral. She was a Trojan princess who, despite him killing her brother, had fallen in love with Achilles. Polyxene went willingly to the funeral pyre, where the Greeks killed her. When Achilles was growing up with the centaur Chiron, an oracle foretold that he would die a young man at Troy. His mother once again worried, and so dressed him up as a young woman and hid him in the court of King Lycomedes at Scyros. Other warriors knew from an oracle that Troy would not be captured without his help, and sought to show his true identity at court. This was done by Odysseus presenting gifts to all of the "maidens." All of the other women selected feminine gifts, while Achilles selected weapons (some say it was a reaction to a horn blown by Odysseus)...thus revealing his true identity. Pronunced: a-KILL-eez Other names  Pelides, Aeacides.

Dear Classmates,

When the author from Walls Within Walls came to school what I really liked from her visit was that I noticed stuff with the book that I never noticed before like  when there was a note throughout the boarder of the book also i noticed more things and here they are these #5 reasons:

1.I liked when she put a family (wink) at the last page that said "I love you faster"  and when she made most of her characters  like her own family. She didnt do anything without her childrens liking.

2.lso I liked when she Told us about the timecapsule and how she put hers in a mystery.Which made me want to make one.

3.next I liked when she was confernecing with us about her knew book and how she puts her titles in the same words like (Walls Within Walls and Tunnels Through Tunnels.).

4.I liked how she told us about her umpcoming storie and if she made past stories.

5.I liked how she told us how she got inspired into writing.

               PEACE=http://!!! :-):-} :-p :-D:-B:-]

             Sincerly,

Dear Fellow #Green Reading Group,

We are currently reading the book Found [by: Margret Peterson Haddix] the book started slow then got very interesting later in the book. My first prediction is how I thought this book would have mystery in it because of the front cover and the name which sounded mysterious to me. My second prediction is when I thought that mysterious plane that came to gate 2B was a ghost plane because the Sky Trails Dispatcher said,” they were not missing a plane and everything that was supposed to land in the past hour and  pull up to the right gate and all the other planes were due to arrive in the next hour and if it did we would of tracked it on the radar” and that’s all. And please group # Green read so you can get ready for the next book club meeting=http://!

Sincerely B.o.m.,

Reading Response Letter

Dear classmates,
I’m am still reading the book NERDS (BY MICHAEL BUCKELY) it is great, it’s about a boy named Jackson Jones (popular kid) and a group of NERDS known as Matilda “Wheezer” Choi , Duncan “Gluestick” Dewey , Ruby “Puferfish” Peet , Heathcliff “Choppers” Hodges , Julio “Flinch” Escala , Jackson “Braceface” Jones. I love it so far because it’s filled with mystery and suspense. But enough chat lets get to the good parts, this week we are practicing noting details. One of the details I noted were when the author said “One snatched Butch (the mean Bulldog) by the jaws and forced them open, while the second metallic arm grabbed the plate with the disturbingly ugly veal and pored every last chunk into his mouth” and “Director Brand’s face tightened like he had just bitten into a sour pickle”. Those were my noting details I hope you enjoyed them. I really encourage people to read this book because its author (MICHAEL BUCKELY) is really good with deatails, he has also written many fabulous books like the Sisters Grim series and ect.

reading assesment

Article posted October 11, 2010 at 07:27 PM GMT-5 • comment (1) • Reads 165

Dear fellow classmates
I am reading a new book called Diary of a Wimpy Kid [The Last Straw]. This book is about a boy named Greg Heffely, Greg is the middle of two other brothers Many [the baby] and Rodrick [the oldest and dumbest of them all] .Rodrick is in a band called Loded diper which is really spelt [Loaded Diaper] .Greg’s parents are as normal as parents can get.
I’ve could visualize every word and saying in this book “my eyes are locked in on the story” I’ve also made many interesting predictions like I predict Greg will be disappointed that fact that the wrestling moves he saw on T.V were fake moves and the prediction was approved. I’ve even made lots of generalizations, wonders and also new vocabulary but the strategy we are working on this week is context clues I’ve used this method a million times on of them is that I had to find out what badger means then I used the words after and before it “Greg’s father kept on badgering him to start exercising outside” then I realized that BADGERRING means kept bothering him I got this because I know KEPT means keep on doing and I also know parents want you to be fit when you grow up . Even though I love using my context clues I also love using other strategies like predicting, visualizing, making generalizations and wondering. KEEP ON READING JUST RIGHT BOOKS. PEACE=http://=http://=http://!!!!

Reading Report

Article posted October 5, 2010 at 04:24 PM GMT-5 • comment • Reads 174

Dear Classmates I am reading the fabulous book Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K Rollins {the last book in the series} this book is just so fantastic it is all about the three best friend {Ron Hermione and Harry} they are sent on an adventure to save the world and their school Hogwarts . This series has been so ravishing throughout all of it’s *1 –* 7 books.
I’ve been use many skills lately like visualization, predicting, new vocabulary, making inferences, drawing conclusions and last but not least the one we’re practicing now, making GENERALIZATIONS! One of my favorite GENERALIZATIONS strategies was that I think that Harry loves magic because in the book he said “I love magic”! And a another one was when I knew that Dee was a bad guy because they said “he is the worst magician of them all and his foul stench could kill you”[ from the book magician secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott} and [P.S] GENERALIZATIONS means-the GENERAL not super specific!!!
