Creation of the World
In the begining there was only chaos. Then out of the void emerged Erebus, from the unknowable place where death lies, and Night. All else was empty, silent, endless, and just plain darkness. Then, somehow Love was born bringing a start to order. From Love came Light and Day, and once there was Light and Day, the world appeared.
Then Erebus slept with Night, who gave birth to Ether, the holy light, and to Day; the earthly light. Then Night alone produced Doom, Fate, Death, Sleep, Dreams, Nemesis, and others that come to man out of darkness.
Meanwhile, Gaea alone gave birth to Uranus: the heavens. Uranus became Gaea's spouse, and together they produced the three Cyclpses, the three Hecatoncheires, and twelve Titans.
However, Uranus was a horrible father and spouse. He hated Hecatoncheires. He imprisoned them by forcing them into the hidden places of the earth, Gaea's stumach. This made Gaea upset and she plotted against Uranus. She made a flint sickle and tried to get her children to attack Uranus. All of them were too afraid, except the youngest Titan, Cronos.
Gaea and Cronus set up an attack on Uranus as he was with Gaea. Cronus grabed his father and castrated him, with the stone sickle, throwing the severed genitales into the ocean. The fate of Uranus is not clear. He either died, withdrew from the earth, or exiled himself to Italy. As he departed he promised that Cronus and the Titans would be punished. From his spilt blood came the Giants, the Ash Tree Nymphs, and the Erinnyes. From the sea foam where his genitales fell came Aphrodite.
Cronus became the next ruler. He imprisoned the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires in Tartarus. He married his sister Rhea, under his rule the Titans had many offspring. He ruled for many ages. However, Gaea and Uranus both had prophesied that he would be overthrown by a son. To avoid this Cronus swallowed each of his children as they were born. Rhea was angry at the treatment of the children and ploted against Cronus. When it came time to give birth to her sixth child, Rhea hid herself, then she left the child to be raised by nymphs. To concel her act she wrapped a stone in swaddling cloths and passed it off as the baby to Cronus, who swallowed it.
This child was Zeus. He grew into a handsome youth on Crete. He consulted Metis on how to defeat Cronus. She prepaired a drink for Cronus design to make him vomit up the other children. Rhea convinced Cronus to accept his son and Zeus was allowed to return to Mount Olympus as Cronus's cupbearer. This gave Zeus the opertunity to slip Cronus the specially prepaired drink. This worked as planned and the other five children were vomitted up. Being gods they were unharmed. They were thankful to Zeus and made him their leader.
Cronus was yet to be defeated. He and the Titans, except Prometheus, Epimetheus, and Oceanus, fought to retain their power. Atlas became their leader in battle and it looked for some time as though they would win and put the young gods down. However, Zeus was cunning. He went down to Tartarus and freed the Cyclopes and the Hecatoncheires. Prometheus joined Zeus as well. He returned to battle with his new allies. The Cyclopes provided Zeus with lighting bolts for weapons. The Hecatoncheires he set in ambush armed with boulders. With the time right, Zeus retreated drawing the Titans into the Hecatoncheires's ambush. The Hecatoncheires rained down hundreds of boulders with such a fury the Titans thought the mountains were falling on them. They broke and ran giving Zeus victory.
Zeus exiled the Titans who had fought against him into Tartarus. Except for Atlas, who was singled out for the special punishment of holding the world on his shoulders.
However, even after this victory Zeus was not safe. Gaea angry that her children had been imprisoned gave birth to a last offspring, Typhoeus. Typhoeus was so fearsome that most of the gods fled. However, Zeus faced the monster and flinging his lighting bolts was able to kill it. Typhoeus was burried under Mount Etna in Sicily.
Much later a final challenge to Zeus rule was made by the Giants. They went so far as to attempt to invade Mount Olympus, piling mountain upon mountain in an effort to reach the top. But, the gods had grown strong and with the help of Heracles the Giants were subdued or killed.

Maureen O' Sherry Reflection

Hello to whoever is reading my blog! We are supposed to blog about Maureen O' Sherry's visit. When she started her presentation on the clue hunt throughout her own house, I was amazed that she really had the time to set the whole process up. At least I think that it was her own house (I am not positive). I was also interested in the sequel to Walls Within Walls (Tunnels to Tunnels). The only con to the sequel is when she mentioned that there would be a haunting ghost in the hotel. The one thing I liked about Walls Within Walls is that it had a touch of reality in it, and it didn't get too out of hand with the fantasy. When she mentioned the ghost, I felt like the sequel would ruin the series because of the fantasy surrounding the ghosts. Also, I am not sure that I am going to read the sequel because it comes out about 2 years from now and I probably wouldn't even think about reading it (although I have nothing against it, except for the ghost). I also think that when she told us about the time capsule that she wanted to hide in her walls, I thought that was so cool because I would love to find a time capsule hidden in the walls of my house. Overall, when Maureen Sherry came, it was definitely worth while to listen to her speak.

You all know (from the last reading response) that I’m trading The Hobbit. I was very confused at first when the book just started out and jumping right in with no explanation. As the book goes along, it explains itself; without the author coming right up and telling you. It gives you very easy questions that you have to answer yourself. It lets you put the pieces together yourself (that is what I like about the book). I know that I haven’t given a full “Stop & Jot” but the book hasn’t really given any “new” information. My apoligies.

Dear Class,
I am now reading The Hobbit. It is a book about a hobbit (it’s basically a mini human with mini magic) who is really rich and has very important and rich parents who left all their fortune to Bilbo Baggins. (Their son) I am not too far into the book, but what is happening right now is that twelve mysterious dwarves just walked into Bilbo’s house, putting Bilbo in a position (cleverly politely) to give them food and drinks. Bilbo did not invite them in; they just kind of walked in. More specifically, they are singing (as they put it) “A Dark Song For Dark Business”. Bilbo is really freaking out right now because he doesn’t know what Dark Business is. All he knows is that he has invited his friend Gandalf over for tea, and thirteen other dwarves showed up with him.
The detail that really caught my eye was when the author described the song that the dwarves sang. The author said, "It was a beautiful golden harp, and when Thorin struck it, the music began all at once, so sudden and sweet that Bilbo forgot everything else, and was swept away into dark lands under strange moons, far over the water and very far from his hobbit-hole under the hill." As soon as I read that, I had a crystal clear image in my mind of a foggy night with moons in every direction and the hobbit standing in the middle of vast hills. Then when I read the sentences after that, the image in my mind changed. The sentence was, "The dark came into the room from the little window that opened in the side of the hill; the firelight flickered- it was April- and still they played on, while the shadow of Gandalf's beard wagged against the wall. The dark filled all the room, and the fire died down, and the shadows were lost, and still they played on."
lt was really very easy to picture that in my mind. People say that The Hobbit is written very well, and as I am reading it, I am seeing that statement is true. I hope you enjoyed these short snippets of The Hobbit as much as I did.

You might know that I just finished The Lost Hero, but I have also finished the Giver. I liked the ending of the Lost Hero but especially liked the ending of The Giver. I do not want to spoil the ending but I will generalize it. It is a self interpretation ending. It can be devastating, (my first interpretation) or sadly happy. (my second interpretation) I am now reading The Hobbit. My dad says it was his favorite book and it seems pretty good. It is a fantasy genre and that is right up my alley. It is still too early to tell. I really hope I will like it.

DO NOT READ IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO KNOW THE ENDING OF CIRQUE DU FREAK!
For Cirque Du Freak, I think (it has been confirmed) Darren will become a vampire and Steve is a different species that is in war with vampires. I also think that Darren will get in an all out war with Steve and his kind. I have heard (this has not been confirmed) that Steve will be bitten by Madame Octa. I am not sure about that. I am liking the story in short term, but in the long run, I do not think this is a great book. On a scale from 1-10, I would give this story a 4 or 5.

As you probably know I am reading The Lost Hero. Since I was home and not feeling well, I was able to get a lot of reading done. I have been thinking of why Piper has not started to piece together who the terrible monster was. I could also visualize how the laser popped up and shot from the wall. I am eager to read on.

I am continuing The Lost Hero and am wondering what could be so bad that demi-gods would want to tear themselves apart. I have also thought (I'm not sure why) That Jason's parents are Hera and Zeus, both gods. I have found that wrong because Jason said his last name was Grace, Just like Thalia's. Thalia her whole life only got a Zeus claiming so Jason has to be the same. I am not sure I like this book so far, but I haven't liked any books lately. I guess I am being to judge mental.

I am continuing The Lost Hero and have just reached the part where it is Pipers thoughts. They have just reached Camp Half-Blood and am wondering very much what gods their parents are. I have also wondered why Percy has disappeared because in the end of series of the books prior to this series, it said Percy and Annabeth lived happily for the rest of their lives. I do think the first question will be answered, not the second.

Sadly, I have abandoned Sent and have decided to start a new book called The Lost Hero. It didn't have the best lead, but it seems like it is a good book. also, it doesn't use the vivid verbs like we talked about in class. I do love Rick Riordan's writing though. I have paged through the book and it seems like it is set up through characters. For ex., part one is Jason's thoughts, part two is Piper's thoughts etc. I have never seen a book like that. Overall, it looks like a good book.

I am reading Sent and realizing what the tracers (ghosts) are. I have also been wondering if others will be tracers as well, if Chip or Alex interacts with them in a different way than the real Chip and Alex do. For example, if Chip and Alex's tracers go to a party and the real Chip and Alex go to a different party where all of the people from the "supposed to be party" are there. Will all of the tracers from the people at the real party be at the "supposed to party"? I do not think my question will be answered.

I have been wondering a lot. Especially about how JB is talking to the kids in the 15th century if they have the Elucidator, what is he talking into? Also, where in the 15th century are the kids. The only facts the text gives is that they are in a dark room, and it smells like rotting meat. One more thing is, what will Chip's death be, because JB refused to tell him. I am dying to read on.

I was sooooo wrong. Jonah should not have trusted JB at all. I was also wondering how did Hodge or Gray change the time when they were tied up? Did time change itself? I don't know because JB said that Hodge and Gray changed the time. I think that JB, Gray, and Hodge know how to get out of their situation, but they are not telling the kids because they want the kids to realize they are their only hope. I am not sure though.

I have been wondering why Jonah is now not trusting JB. (the JB in the book) Even though Mr. Hodge is saying that the kids should not trust JB, I think JB has shown that he is on Jonah's side by warning him, and tackling Gray.

Dear Class,
I am now reading Found and am at a very intense part. Right now, JB (the JB in the book) is being threatened with some type of futuristic gun. Jonah is standing in front of JB to protect him. The person with the gun, (Mr. Hodge) cannot shoot Jonah and JB because Jonah is worth possibly two million dollars and Mr. Hodge cannot afford to waste it.
I have been doing a lot of wondering. I have been wondering why the "scanner is not picking up that Daniella is not there. Even if Katheine did not touch it, wouldn't it pick up that not all of the thirty six members of the plane are not all there. I have also been wondering why there was a list of survivors when all of the members of the plane are there. If there are survivors, there will be non-survivors as well. Also, it is weird how none of the other kids are noticing that Mr. Hodge and Mr. Gray are not usual, casual tour guides. They are lucky that Mr. Hodge and Mr. Gray need them. The biggest wonder I've had is where are the kids being taken? Mr. Hodge said that he is taking them to a better place, does that mean he is going to kill them? I am not sure. I know this is wrong, but I read the back cover of Sabotaged, the third book in the series at the book fair. It said that Alex (who's Alex) and Chip are... I was so confused I stopped there. I think that Jonah's real name is Alex or else Jonah is dead.
Our main topic this week is using Context Clues. I have used Context Clues to figure out the meaning of The Pied Piper. It used details to explain what it meant. It meant: The fairytale where a wolf leads a bunch of children into the woods and they all get trapped. Jonah compared this to his situation. He is one of the kids though. Mr. Hodge and Mr. Gray are like the Pied Piper leading the kids into a trap. I have also used Clues when it said adrenaline was pumping through his body. It also said he only felt like this when he played soccer. I have concluded that adrenaline means anxiety. I still wasn't sure so I looked it up and found that it is a hormone that produces in your body when you get very excited.
I hope you enjoyed my response!
Sincerely,
DC

CC- I came across a strange word, but it seemed familiar but I couldn't quite place it. it was The Pied Piper. It used the detail method which means it explained it in surrounding sentences. I figured out it was a fairy tale where the Pied Piper magically leads a bunch of kids into a forest to trap them. I can compare this to Mr. Hodge and Mr. Gray because he is leading them into a forest and trapped them in the cave. I think JB (the JB in the book) will not be able to save them. I hope he does though.

Dear Class,
As you probably know, I am reading Mockingjay. I have been surprised how sad it is. It is almost too sad that it makes it a less of a good book than Catching Fire and Hunger Games. I am done It. I do not like the ending whatsoever because it slams you with sadness and it leaves it unfinished.
I have been wondering a lot. Gale said that Katniss will choose who she can't live without. I wonder why Katniss thinks badly of herself because that means she will pick whoever she loves most. I think Katniss has interpreted it as she will choose who she needs the most, not who she loves the most. I am not sure what Gale meant. I have also been wondering how the Capitol has had the supplies to make the mutts with all the districts shut off. I have been wondering about President Snow. It seems a little suspicious that he was inviting people into his mansion if he thought it is not safe enough to even leave the mansion. I think thought this was a trap. I think he knew Katniss and her troop were after him and this is the way to finally trap them. I have also been wondering why anybody would send Prim out to the Capitol. I think this because either she would make Katniss stronger or breaker her down. I think they sent her to do both.
Our main topic this week is about making generalizations. I have made a generalization that most of the rebels weren't fighting for the Capitol, they were fighting to have peace and democracy. My facts are that Coin and Putarch specifically said "In the end, we will have peace and democracy." He did not say anything like "In the end, we will finally be rid of the Capitol." Another fact is that the rebels have targeted the districts to have first, not the Capitol. The rebels can range from Haymitch to Prim to Katniss. They are all different. Event though they are all different, I would say that most of the rebels are like Katniss because they had enough fighters to overrun the Capitol, and Katniss is a fighter. I hope there will be some type of epilogue story by Suzanne Collins. If you like these books, you will also enjoy Gregor The Overlander also by SUzanne Collins.

When Mrs. Hopkins arrived, she had no idea that she was going to encounter what she did. When she bumped into the police officer, she knew by his tone this was very serious. “What is going on?” I ask before I fully know what is going on. He answers in a surprisingly polite voice. “He has located some classified criminal information. He is not in any trouble, we just need him to describe how he found it. I go with them silently thinking how relieved I am that he is not in any trouble. when we get to the man’s office, I see a stylish bowl with a wilted flower that looks like it’s growth had just stopped so it could just start dying. The officer takes off his designer jacket and plops down with Michael. I decide to stand. While they are talking about the files, I am staring out the window. I can see a green slope next to the black train station. I see a squirrel gathering it’s supply for the winter. I snap back to attention just to see that the file is a CD. I see a clip obviously from a security camera. I see two men talking and one of them looks very excited. I just notice that it is a special type of security camera because I can hear what they are saying. “You have been chosen to be part of M.U.R.F, the secret group that-” “Yea Yea, I know what it is, get on with it.” He was out-spoken. It was then that they noticed they were being filmed. The one being “accepted” was the first to react. He takes a vase and it is thrown at the camera. But not before I see his face. Before I realize who it is, the policeman says, “He sure looks like you. He could be your brother.” “No.” I deny. but he was right. I froze knowing that the guy was my other brother, Michael.

I was reading this morning and I was wondering, why would they Capitol want to save the hover crafts so they could make an escape from their enemy. It would make more sense to just bomb their enemy with their hover crafts so they wouldn't even have to escape from their enemy. I guess I just have to keep on reading.

I am reading Mockingjay and I have just noticed how much of an impact Cinna has had on the world. For instance, he has designed Katniss's slogan, he has made her Mockingjay and also her first rebel attempt (The burning dress). He has not only been Katniss's clothes expert, he has been her revolution designer. I have made a generalization that most of the rebels have had some bad experience with the Capitol. The facts I have is that 1: Katniss has had the whole Peeta affair and the berry affair, 2: Haymitch with the forcefield, Katniss, and Peeta, Beete: with the Games and him going back in. I think it safe to say that a lot of rebels, have had bad Capitol memories.

W- I wonder what will be destroyed of District 13. Will Katniss ever be able to leave the cave? I think District 13 will be able to counter the attack because they have specifically said they have been preparing for an attack for over a decade. Plus, they also knew it was coming because Peeta has sacrificed himself to tell District 13 bombs will be coming. I also wonder if Peeta really is dead. I can't wait to read on.

Catching Fire
I am reading Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins. It is the sequel to The Hunger Games. It is about a dark future where 24 kids have to go into a government designed arena and they have to fight to death. It is a reminder that there will not be another rebellion against the capitol. Even though the twelve districts have not yet started another rebellion yet, they have always been preparing. The main character’s names are Katniss and Peeta. I do not want to spoil the book, but I’ll just say Katniss does something in the end of book one that is the spark of the rebellion. That is why the second book is called Catching Fire.
Again, I do not want to spoil it so all I'll say is that a rebellion has started up and the capitol is taking extreme measures. It is very intense, and in my opinion, the Catching Fire is better than the Hunger Games. I have just finished it, and because of the shocking ending, I can't wait to get started on Mockingjay!A conclusion I have made for the trilogy is that Panem will split up into two sections: The Districts (rebellions) and the Capitol. I have come to this conclusion because The districts are very strong but so is the Capitol, so they will be forced to go their separate ways.

Mrs. Hopkins was frightened about her doctor’s appointment. She had a scary memory with a needle and ever since, she has been frightened by doctor’s appointments. Also, seeing commercials on TV where people were being operated on scared her. She could barely contain her fear. Unfortunately, the closest doctors office is eighty miles away, so she had too take the freight train. Once she was on, she claimed a seat. It wasn’t very reassuring that the sign said: Stay Healthy! Get A Flu Shot! so she decided to look out the window. It was pointless though because it was very foggy outside. The train suddenly plunged into darkness as it went beneath a tunnel. Mrs. Hopkins recognized this tunnel. It was about fifteen minutes from town. She just smelled the whiff of gasoline when a voice explained, “The journey is complete. Please get ready to disembark.” When Mrs. Hopkins was getting off, she saw a sign that she had never seen. It read: Welcome to Philadelphia! Population: 1,447,395. As she was staring at the sign, she ran straight into a police officer. He was carrying her brother.
