Germans vs. Romans Essay

Article posted May 3, 2012 at 02:11 PM GMT • comment • Reads 141

In this essay was assigned there were two major expectations. To compare the German Culture and the Roman culture, and do it in a well written paragraph with an introduction that hook the reader, three topic paragraphs that support your information, and a conclusion paragraph that brings closure. What I feel I did well with was creating my introduction paragraph and comparing the two cultures. What I could have worked on is my concluding paragraph.

Essay

In the beginning the Germans lived in the forests and marshes of northern Europe in search of more fertile land, and they slowly came towards the Roman Empire. The Germans hoped to live peacefully with the Romans, but the Romans considered them barbaric and fought to keep them out for many years. But by the year 300 AD Rome had grown very week so they let some German tribes in were they settled in the Danube river valley. The Germans culture mixed with the Romans culture, but they also had some differences. In this essay we how German village life, military, and religion is different from the Romans.

The village life of a German was very different from the city life of a Roman. It was different because they lived in different environments, they socialized differently, and they lived in different houses. There environments were different because the Germans lived in small villages and the Romans lived in the crowded city. This effected they’re lifestyle because in the city Romans mostly had one profession that did not produce food, for example, a carpet maker, and they would sell the carpets and buy food produced by large plantations, As for the Germans every family either herding cattle or farming. They socialized differently because The Germans believed in hospitality; it was against the law to turn away anyone who wanted to come inside, guests were also always welcomed, fed, and entertained. As for the Romans they did not socialize with people they did not know. They’re houses were different because the Germans lived in long thatched roof huts that were heated by animals and the Romans lived in crowded six story high apartments called islands. This effected they’re lifestyle because Germans could easily go in and out of their huts easily as for the Romans it was harder. Also, upper class Germans and Romans lived in nicer houses, for example, a rich Roman lives in a Domus and a rich German has a much decorated house.

The German military and Roman military were very different in many ways. They were different because they had different fighting styles, they became warriors differently, and they had different military styles. They’re fighting styles were different because the Germans fought in bands or small groups of warriors and had no specific battle plans, they were also very loyal to military leader, or chieftain, as for the Romans they fought in legions and were fallowed the command of they’re leaders. The Germans and the Romans also had their own ways of becoming a warrior. For the Germans, they began training for battle when they were young, and when they reached manhood, they were brought to a special ritual were they received a shield and a spear, as for the Romans, they were able to volunteer to join the army at any time. Also, the loss of a German spear or shield meant loss of honor.

The German religion and the Roman religion were also very different. They are different because they have different gods, they have a different style of religion, and there level of warship. There gods were different because the Germans based they’re religion more on nature, and the Romans based their religion on bigger things such as thunder and rain. They’re style of religion was also different, the Germans were more spiritual people and based they’re religion off of nature, as the Romans believed that the gods created everything but don’t control them. They’re level of warship was different because the Germans were very dedicated to their religion, while the Romans were also dedicated, but not as much as the Romans. And that is why the German religion is different from the Romans.

The German village life was different because of their environments, social life, and their houses. The German military was different from the Romans because of their fighting styles, warriors, and their military styles. The German religion was different from the Romans Because of their gods, religion style, and level of warship. There are also many other reasons why the Germans are different from the Romans. Their government, clothing, and slave demand were also very different too. The Romans were also based they’re empire more off of trading than the Germans did. And those are the reasons the why the German military, religion, and daily life was different from the Romans.

Glatiator Journal Exerpt

Article posted March 8, 2012 at 02:27 PM GMT • comment • Reads 492

This is the Journal of a glatiator that I wrote to learn facts about Glatiators, Colloseums, and life in Rome.

Exerpt:

Today I was working in the bread

shop with master, when I was told that the emperor requested I was to be sent

to become a gladiator. They took me away along with a few other slaves.

They took us to the barracks where I will stay during my training.

I was sent to barrack number 15, and I will start my training tomorrow with all

the other gladiators. Most of us are slaves, but some of the other gladiators

were free men who volunteered for fame, and there are a couple upper class Romans

who were forced to become gladiators for the emperor’s amusement. I wish I was

sent to one of the larger barracks because one of the other slaves told me that

they had their own fighting grounds there and that members of the same fighting

style have their own private trainers. Some of the other gladiators bond

together in their own formal associations. Membership is constantly fluctuating

here. I heard that when a gladiator dies they often let their fellows bury

them. When we got here they had us take an oath that meant giving ourselves

slave status, not that I already am. I am still unsure if I should make some

friends here because I might have to face them in battle.

         Today we were sent

to the training school. Last night they fed me very well and I met many new people.

I was surprised to see that not all gladiators are men, some of us are woman.

They will put me on a special diet so that I can have lots of energy for battle.

The trainers tested us to see what type of gladiator we will be, and what

techniques and fighting styles we will use. I was chosen to be a Retiarius, because

I used to be owned by a fisherman and I am very handy with a net. I was sent to

a special training unit because I am left handed. Most of the other gladiators are

jealous because left handed gladiators have an advantage over right handed ones

because there not used blocking their left side. Most fighting styles came from

those the Romans conquered, so I was given the Egyptian fighting style since I was

born there. Fighting styles are also very stereo typed here, so I hope I don’t get

laughed at. People in the straining school are very competitive with their

grades (paloi).
