Germans vs. Romans Essay

Article posted May 3, 2012 at 01:11 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 32

What did the Germans and Romans have in common? What didn’t they have in common? In this article you will learn all about the contrasts between Roman and German cultures. Who were the Germans? The Germans were people that had taken part of Roman life, but then drifted away and made their own civilization and developed their own cultures. Animals were a huge part of their everyday life. They owned farmland and the women did most of the work when it came to farming and tending to the animals. The men were warriors. In the next few paragraphs, I will compare all of those customs to Roman cultures and many more.

The German’s house was divided into two: Half of the house was where the family lived and the other half was for the animals. The animals were kept in stalls. When it was cold during the winter, they kept the family warm. The Romans did not live with any animals. They had different housing depending on their class. The wealthy lived in a private house called a domus. It had marble walls, colored stone floors, and windows made of small panes of glass. They had a furnace that heated the pipes so that there was warm running water that even went to the upper floors. The poor roman families lived in apartment buildings called islands. The higher the floor, the less the rent. The first floor usually contained shops. In the German culture, men were warriors. They spent their time fighting, hunting and making weapons. Even when you were a young boy, you started training for war. When you became a man, you were brought to a special gathering held in a sacred grove under a full moon. You were given a shield and spear. You had to keep it with you at all times. if you lost it, you would have loss of honor. If you were a man in the Roman culture, you were the head of the house and you got to choose who your children married.
Women. They were treated similarly in some ways, and not so the same in other ways. In Roman cultures, the father was the head of the house. He made all of the decisions and even picked who the children married. From hearing that you automatically think that men were treated much higher and better than women, and that was the case. In German cultures, it was the same in the way that men were treated higher than the women. the women did the farming. So did the children and enslaved people, which meant that they were in some ways considered on the same level. Think about women today being treated like that! When the women were not farming, they were cooking or spinning wool. They would also weave cloth on looms.

There was education in both cultures, but especially the Romans. The boys and girls of Rome went to school until they were 12 years old. Once the children hit that age, the poor boys went to work and the rich went to get a formal education. When the boys became 15, they went to a school of rhetoric. In this school you learned about writing and speech. This school prepared you for a career in politics. The Germans language at first didn't have any alphabet, so there was no way to read or write. Some learned to speak and write latin, which eventually turned into the modern language Germany uses today. The Germans believed that the law came from the people. A law could not be changed without the people’s approval. The Romans believed that the law came from the emperor.

For a conclusion to this article, that is the proof to show you that there are many similarities and many differences between the Roman and German cultures. I think that there are similarities, but they are never exact, they show it but in different ways. What culture would you like to live in? Think...

Gladiator Journal Project

Article posted March 8, 2012 at 01:51 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 8

Excerpt-

Introduction:

This is my fictional journal of a roman gladiator. It is about a roman gladiator, the Colosseum, and every day life.

Dear Journal,

After all that preparation, the real training began. The schools are for training gladiators. The trainers are retired gladiators. They all specialized in certain styles of fighting and weapons. The trainers are called doctoreses. Most of the trainers are not very nice, but there is this one I really like. They need to get me to the peak of fitness. The trainers say that I am pretty easy to train and my progress is coming along very well. I don’t mean to brag, but I am very strong and definitely one of the best gladiators in training.

The other day when we were using these wooden training swords that we use instead of sharp weapons, I won against my opponent in the first couple minutes! The wooden swords that we practice with are called ruduses. All of the different kinds of gladiators that go to this school practice different fighting styles and techniques. Where I am trained, the doctores teaches me fighting styles with different weapons that are different from other gladiators. I’m not really sure when I am going to go into the arena. My trainer will decide when I am ready for big time fighting in the arena.

Dear Journal,

I am still in training, even though I am the best in the training group. My trainer still hasn’t told me that I can go into the arena. I’m sure it will happen soon. I am not allowed to talk during meals. There are people watching me the whole time! It’s kind of creepy. I have my first meal at dawn and we do have three meals a day. The new gladiators like me have a very high protein diet. We get three meals a day and we really need it to get all the energy for training.

Our diets are made up of fish, meat, bread, cereals and vegetables. Meat is definitely my favorite.

We don’t drink anything but water. Well this entry was pretty much just about food, but I thought that was one really important parts of my life. I really hope that next entry I have something more exciting to tell you.

My Prezi

I researched the Battle of Salamis. I guess we did work together. I researched my part that we decided that I would do and I wrote my script for the Prezi. I also helped write the notes for the actual Prezi presentation. I think when we were researching, we all used different sources. I know personaly that I used EBSCO Host.

I learned a lot about my eye. I learned that there are cones in the back of your eye that help you see color.

My First Blog - 6th Grade

I love Science class! We do a lot of journal writing. It was fun going into the woods and writing about our five senses. The baby fawn that Mr. Bissonnette showed us was really cute. It was so small! Going out to the garden to look at all the flowers was interesting, too. We drew a picture of a flower and labeled it. Mr. Bissonnette showed us a monarch butterfly caterpillar that was in an open container with milk weed. About a week later, we saw a greenish colored chrysalis dangling from a plant hanging from the ceiling! We drew a labeled drawing of that, too. For Tech Ed., we are working on ping pong paddles! We’re allowed to make them the shape of anything as long as it is a certain size. I decided to make mine in the shape of a pug’s head. After they are cut into their shape, we will paint them. In Life Skills, we made salsa. It was really good. First, we went out to the garden to pick the tomatoes. Then, we went back into the class room to chop them up. We also added basil, green peppers, and cayenne pepper. Then we had chips and salsa and it was awesome! In Social Studies, we are studying the five themes of geography. One of the themes is Human Environmental Interaction. The rest are exact location, relative location, place, region, and movement. We also are studying then Antarctic Circle, Arctic Circle, Tropic of Capricorn, Tropic of Cancer, and the Equator. In Math class, we went out to the garden to dig up potatoes. We dug up 57 potatoes! Then, we took them inside so that we could way them the next day. The next day when we weighed them, the potato that weighed the most was 321 grams. The potato that weighed the least was 4 grams. We also learned how to make a fraction into a decimal. Last, but certainly not least, we got to do ratios with M&M’s. And yes, we got to eat some, too. In Music class, we are learning to read notes. We’ve already learned to read a, b, c, d, e, f, and g. We have also been learning how to play the drums. Mrs. Worth is so awesome. She makes everything really fun even if it is kind of boring. In Gym class, we started with a cooperative games unit. One of the really fun games was two sets of cones set up with hockey sticks on them with a rope hanging in the middle. We had to figure out how to get all of us over both sets of cones without knocking off the hockey sticks or touching the ground in the middle of the sets of cones. To do this, we took off our sneakers and threw them at the rope so that the rope would swing over to us. Then, we sent the heaviest people first and the lightest people last. And, it was a success! In Language Arts class, our first assignment was to make a hand. Each one of the fingers on the hand stood for something different. For instance, one of the fingers stood for things that you love. Another finger stood for things that you were good at doing. We also had to write our name in large print in the palm of the hand. I wrote mine very colorfully. In Spanish class, our first test was on how many Spanish-speaking countries and people there are in the world. Our most recent test was on the Spanish alphabet. In the Spanish alphabet there are a few extra letters like rr, ll, and ch. In Art class, our first project was to choose a Fall fruit or vegetable to draw. I chose a pineapple. We drew it on a piece of linoleum with a pencil. Then, we carved out where the pencil marks were. Next, we will paint over the linoleum and print the image on paper - like a stamp.
