For this assignment we were asked to write a factual based essay on Germans compared to Romans. We were asked to explain the culture of the Romans as well as the Germans, then compare at least three reason why they are different. We also were asked to do a certain format. This format is the five paragraph essay. This means we have a introduction, three paragraphs supporting the topic, and a conclusion to conclude our work.Below this paragraph is my essay for this assignment.
Imagine Germans and Romans on the battlefield fighting against each other! Was it from their differences? Yes, it must be! Well, what type of differences led them to this imaginary fighting? Let’s find out! The Germans were people that relied on agriculture. They lived in huts that had thatched roofs and lived with their animals on one side of the house. The Germans made a living by herding cattle and farming. Germans strongly believed in being polite. It was against the law to even turn down someone when people were having celebrations. The Germans spoke a language that is similar to modern German, but it didn’t have a written language so they adopted the Roman written language. They wore simple clothing as well. Romans on the other hand, had a very urban city with a lot of trade that occurred. Romans either had very poor people or very wealthy people. A typical Roman person would live in an apartment building with running water above a shop of some sort. The lower class people in Rome made a living by farming or working in shops, while the rich people didn’t work much at all. These types of people are very different. The major differences between Romans and Germans however, were how they fought, their laws, and their daily life.
One major difference between Romans and Germans was their way of fighting. Germans spent most of their lives training for war even when they were young boys. To be an official German man they held sacred ceremonies where the soon-to-be- man would be given a spear and shield under a full moon in a grove. They had to keep the shields with them at all times or it would be considered a disgrace. Unlike the Romans that were divided into legions to fight, Germans were in clans. Clans are groups based on family relations. Also Romans didn’t have chieftans who were military leaders. Germans first elected these chieftans, but later on it was based on heredity. Clans typically gave loyalty towards them. The chieftans would supply the warriors with leadership, weapons, and an adventure. Additionally, while Germans didn’t have a specific way of fighting, the Romans did within their legions. Legions would fight all together and occasionally break off, while Germans were divided into small bands. The bands would make sneaky raids and charge while screaming to scare people away. Germans soldiers also used different weapons than the Romans such as daggers, short swords, and heavy axes. They also had wooden shields while Romans had large metal shields. The fighting styles of Romans and Germans were not much alike.
The laws for the Germans and the Romans were also very different. Germans did not write their laws down, but passed them down from generation to generation. The Romans did almost the complete opposite because they made sure that the laws were written on twelve tablets so they would be clearly followed. Unlike Romans (or so it’s said), Germans had fights that were usually from alcohol called blood feuds. These fights would go on from generations to generations to seek revenge for one another. Germans had judges to prevent situations like these from happening. The Germans would have to take an oath that they were not guilty. They would be defended by oath-helpers. If a German couldn’t find an oath-helper they would have to have an ordeal, which was a major trial. Some ordeals included walking on coals, and if you healed in a certain amount of days then that proved you were not guilty. Another ordeal was throwing you into a lake, and if you sank, then you were innocent. Sometimes, instead of physical punishment, a tax, called a wergeld, could be put on you. Wergeld costs depended on what crime you did. Just like Romans, German punishments also depended on how high you were in a class. Some German and Roman laws were similar, but overall, laws for German and Romans were quite different.
The Romans and Germans also differed in their daily life. Germans were a more agriculturally based civilization, while Romans were an urbanely based civilization. For example, Germans lived in houses centered on farmland. Their homes were huts with thatched roofs with open spaces surrounding them. Also, Germans shared their houses with animals on one side to produce more heat for the houses. Germans also made a living by farming. This is different from the Romans who lived in apartment many floors high in the cities. They also farmed, but as the civilization started changing, the Romans left the farming to slaves. Additionally, the gap between rich and poor didn’t seem as great between Germans compared to the Romans because Germans welcomed everybody to participate in any past time or event. That is because they had a lot of hospitality. Generally speaking, Romans were not similar to Germans when it came to their way of life.
Germans and Romans are not similar. They have different laws. For example, Germans enforce ordeals upon someone that has committed a crime while Romans didn’t do that. They also have different military techniques. Romans had legions to fight, while Germans had bands that fought. Lastly, the Germans’ way of life was based upon farming with huts for houses, while Romans were centered in an urban area that had large apartment and animals typically didn’t go inside. Now you know why the Germans and the Romans would have a fight about their differences because they are not the same at all.

In Social Studies class we did a project to learn and research about Roman Gladiators. We took our information about gladiators and put them into in ancient journal. My journal is from the gladiators point. We had to put as much research in the journal as possible to show what we learned. Here is an excerpt of my journal
June 30th
Before fighting I had seen the Collosseum. It was phenomenal. There were awnings, which held a retractable roof to protect us from the sun and hot temperatures. The sailors control the retractable roof because it is made out of a thick, heavy, cloth like material, similar to those on ships. The shape of the Colosseum is shaped from the Roman theatres. That’s why it’s called an amphitheatre because that means two theatres put together. This design was made to make everyone be able to see the show. The building is so tall it made me feel tiny in comparison. It was 160 feet tall. The first three floors had 80 columns and arches to make the light shine through. Also, in order for the spectators to enter there are 76 entries leading to the designated spot for different classes. The seating holds 50,000, who are seated by rich and the poor. The place where we will fight is made with sand so that it is easy to clean up bloodstains. Below the Colosseum held 32 cages filled with exotic animals. These animals were lifted up through a series of lifts and pulleys so that the gladiator can fight them.
There are many types of gladiators that fight at the Colosseum. Retiarius gladiators, who are known as the weakest gladiator, wear a helmet with a crescent on top. They carry a net that they would throw on their opponent and then finish them off by using a small dagger to put up to their face. They also had a trident, a metal stick with three sharp metal parts protruding from the top, which they would use to throw and deflect with. Since these gladiators had very little protection besides a piece of armor that went on their left arm in order to protect the neck and face, a trident, and a sword, they could easily deflect blows. Retiarius Gladiators and Secutor Gladiators were a popular fighting pair. Another gladiator is called an Equites Gladiator. The Equites gladiator—“equites” literally means horseback, entered on a horse. Thraex gladiators were another type. They had a very small shield as well. There are other types that aren’t as major such as Secutor, Andabatus, Thracian, Samnite, Essedarius, Dimachaerius, Velitus, and Laquerius gladiators. Andabatus gladiators have a helmet with no eyeholes and charge on a horse. Thracian gladiators have a small shield, a dagger, and protection on both legs. Samnite gladiators wear a helmet with a crest and visor. They carry a sword and a big shield. Sectuor gladiators charge at their opponent. Essedarius gladiators fight with a horse and chariot. Dimachaerius gladiators had two swords with little armor. Velitus gladiators had only a spear. Laquerius gladiators were similar to Retarius gladiators except they had a lasso not a net. All these gladiators fought well with a certain type of gladiator. For a gladiator to be paired up with a gladiator that had a similar fighting style is very rare. For my fight I am up against a hoplomachus. A hoplomachus has a crescent on its helmet and a griffin’s head. They have a spear to throw as well. They wear gear all the way up to their knees and have a very small shield to protect their waist.
I, a Murmillo gladiator, have a large, oval shield that covers me from my shoulder to my calf. We have great protection, but at times it can be very difficult to maneuver. We have leg protection on one leg, a leather belt, and a dagger. Our helmets have a dorsal fin on top of it. That’s how we get our nickname fish-fighter.

1.The war or battle I researched was the Battle Of Marathon.
2. My group did divide the work.We divided the work by putting our names next to each of the listed items on the rubric. I was responsible for researching the particular cause of The Battle Of Marathon.
3.I found research for my project by using various online approved resources. I used EBSCO HOST to find some information about where the battle took place(also other information like how it effected us), and who took part in the battle. Then, I used Google Scholar to find out why the battle took place and how the Athenians won.

Hi Momma and Daddy,
In Math class we have been working on Module 1. If you're wondering what a module is I'll explain. A module is the way our textbook is divided in our book there are modules in all. This Friday we just finished up Module 1. You might be wondering what did we learn in Module 1, well I'll explain....
In the first section of module 1 we learned about analyzing graphs. By analyzing a graph we can tell what intervals are represented on the vertical axis and the horizontal axis. Also by using our data we can decide whether to make a line graph or a bar graph. We also learned about tallying for graphs as well.
In the second section of module 1 we learned about sequences and beginning algebra. We learned how to predict patterns by finding relationships between the term number and term. We also learned how to draw pictures to help and represent the different sequences. We also reviewed how to find the volume of a cube by using height times width times length.
In section 3 of module 1 about probability. In this unit we did a project. I choose to work with Lily as you know we chose gumballs out of a bag and then recorded the experimental probability. We learned how to reduce experimental probability as well as theoretical probability.
Before we went to section 4 we went to section 6. In section 6 we evaluated problems with order of operations. We were reminded of PEMDAS. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication or division, addition or subtraction. Then we learned about writing algebra problems.
Right now we are learning about problem solving. What we are trying to learn is to solve and problem and show all your work. Sometimes it's better to show your work then necessarily getting the right answer. It may be difficult but it is really fun once you get the hang of it.
I'm glad you enjoyed reading about my Math class. Thank you for reading!!!
Love,
CJBR
