One thing I learned in this unit was about solutions. A solution is a mixture in which particles of the solute are evenly distributed amongst particles of the solvent. Examples are sugar water, lemonade, Kool-Aid, and colored water. The second thing I learned about was elements. An element is the simplest form of matter. 2 elements are oxygen (O) and carbon (C). The last thing I learned about was compounds. A compound is two or more different elements mixed to form a substance, such as water (H2O) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
My favorite thing in this unit was the solution project, when we brought in 1 solution and 1 mixture. My least favorite thing was learning about elements. How can you tell if something is an element?

This is the story of when I worked with others to accomplish something. Working with others can help improve your character and self-esteem. My family and I had to spread mulch onto our new playground. Here is what happened.
When we started, there was a giant pile of mulch. We started using rakes, raking the mulch on the pile from the pile to the playground. Then, my mom got a leaf blower and blew the mulch onto the playground. My sister and I alternated between using our hands and using rakes. We completed the task over the course of several days, during which I continuously was getting bitten by mosquitoes. When we were finished, the playground looked a lot nicer.
That was the story of when I worked with a group to accomplish something. I learned a lot. The project was hard, but I found how important it was to work together. Now you know what happened.

One of the first things I learned in this unit was conduction. Conduction is the transfer of energy by direct contact. One example of conduction is pancakes on a griddle. The second thing I learned was radiation. Radiation is the transfer of heat from one object to another without the use of matter. We get most of our radiant energy from the Sun here on Earth. The last thing I want to talk about is heat, the transfer of energy from warmer matter to cooler matter. Heat is transfered by conduction, convection, and radiation.
What I liked most in this unit was the popcorn lab where we cooked popcorn 3 ways and identified if they were conduction, radiation, or convection. We got to taste-test afterward! What I liked the least was doing tests and study guides.
In this unit we also learned about insulators and conductors of heat. The only conductor mentioned was metal. Why is water a conductor of electricity and not heat?

I'm in Mr. Phillips's class. My favorite subject is Social Studies. I am enjoying Science and Social Studies this year. I am not enjoying Math and Reading.
My favorite thing to do is read. I also like to watch TV. I am in chorus this year. My favorite sport is softball.
I am looking forward to the field trip to a Pirates game this year. I am not looking forward to the PSSA tests. I have 1 dog, 2 cats, and 2 bunnies. I have previously owned many fish and 1 hamster. I am an animal lover.
