rebel- To oppose those in charge, even to the point of fighting them with weapons, because of different ideas about what is right. (p. 292)

Stamp Act- A law passed by the British Parliament in 1765 requiring colonists to pay a tax on newspapers, pamphlets, legal documents, and even playing cards. (p. 293)

treason- The betrayal of one’s country by giving help to an enemy. (p. 293)

Sons of Liberty- Groups of colonists who organized themselves to protest against the British government. (p. 293)

repeal- To withdraw or cancel. (p. 293)

Townshend Acts- Taxes passed by Parliament in 1767 for goods brought into the colonies. (p. 294)

boycott- To refuse to do business or have contact with a person, group country, or product. (p. 294)

Committees of Correspondence- Groups organized in the 1770s to keep colonists informed of important events. (p. 295)

Boston Tea Party- a 1773 protest against British taxes in which Boston colonists disguised as Mohawks dumped valuable tea into the Boston Harbor. (p. 296)

Intolerable Acts- The laws passed by the British parliament in 1774 that closed Boston Harbor, dissolved the Massachusetts assembly, and forced Boston colonists to house British soldiers. (p. 297)

Patrick Henry- 1736-1799 Virginia Burgess who encouraged the colonists to fight for their independence from Great Britain. (p. 293)

Samuel Adams- 1722-1803 Patriot and leader in the American Revolution. He was a member of the Sons of Liberty and a cousin of John Adams. (p. 293)

Mercy Otis Warren- 1728-1814 Patriot, poet, and playwright who urged women to give up tea and other taxable goods from Great Britain in the 1760s. (p. 294)

Crispus Attucks- 1723?-1770 Patriot and former slave and the first person killed in the Boston Massacre in 1770. (p. 294)

Abigail Adams- 1744-1818 first lady to President John Adams. She wrote many letters about the role of women in the new country. (p. 296)
