Social Studies

Our article was A New Kind of Revolution (Chapter 2)

This is what we have learned on our topic so far in social studies.

1. We have learned that Samuel Slater invented the windmill to create power and was not allowed to take this tech. to the USA from Brittan but later escaped and showed the plans to the US and we started making it.

2. A group of people raced on a coal powered engine against a horse to see which is more efficiant.

3. We also learned that Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin and it could clean out cotton 50 times faster than a human could clean cotton in one day. (People needed to clean out seeds from the cotton before people could use it for different products.)

I know I have posted something about trying to get people to play an online game called Runescape. But here is an article on Wikipedia about Runescape's history.

February Letter

Article posted March 7, 2011 at 06:22 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 191

February… fantastic, fun, and full of learning! Everyday in February was as sweet as the 14th. From math to art, many new concepts were learned. I love to read month, Simple Machines projects, and being in the special math group challenged me and impacted my learning the most. I know you will be amazed as you read about them.

The simple machines projects were completely new to me and I learned a lot about them. In the simple machines projects we had to have a screw, a lever, an inclined plain, a wedge, and a wheel and axel. I worked with Noah Budach at my house on one Saturday and we tried it 17 times before we finally got it to work. We were under a lot of stress, Noah was over from 1:30 – 7:30 and we worked 5 hours of that time! But we resolved our problem. We had plenty of problems collecting our items but we got it done. We also learned terms like lubricant and force. When we presented we got full points for the project. It was really fun.

Being in the special math group was really cool I just have to explain how it happens out in the hallway. At the beginning of our 8th unit Mr. McCartney announced that there are six people that have been frequently been doing well on their math tests and he wants them to work in the hall during math class and work as far ahead as we want but with no explanation on how to do things and our resources are each other and the Student Reference Book. So far it is going great and we are on 9.1 and 6 lessons ahead of the class.

Last, I need tell you about I love to read month. During the month my brain was packed with plenty of new knowledge! Over all I love to read month was excellent! My monthly goal was 2000 minutes but I got 1496 minutes, I was so close to my goal! In order to be able to make my goal I needed to get at least 60 minutes into one days reading. I finished 4 chapter books in the month of February, which got me way ahead. It was a lot of reading! Some books that I recommend are No Talking by Andrew Clements and Call of the Wild by Jack London. We also won a Culvers meal from getting second place in a guessing contest.

February was a phenomenal month! My brain is overflowing, but I am reorganizing for March because I know it will be packed with great learning. This month was AWESOME=http://=http://!

January Letter

Article posted March 7, 2011 at 06:22 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 213

Wow! I can’t believe all we accomplished this month! January was a start to a new growth in learning! Once again, many new concepts were mastered. My Math NWEA, Crazy hair day, and the New Year amazed me and impacted me the most. I know you will be amazed as you read about them.
I learned so much from doing my math NWEA. My previous score was 246 and I went down to 239. Even though I went down 7 points I still learned a ton. I also tried my hardest and that is the most important thing about NWEAs. So over all it was fun, I learned a lot, and I still got a great score.

Crazy Hair Day was so cool I just have to explain what I did for it.
When I woke up at 6:31 AM I got dressed, had breakfast, and packed my bag like usual. After that I grabbed the hair spray/paint and my mom and we went in the garage with a comb and the paint and we started combing my hair up and sprayed it half black half blue and still left a little blonde. Crazy hair day was really fun and I hope we do it next year in 6th grade.

Finally, I need to tell you about New Year’s Eve.
After supper and dishes on New Year’s Eve me and my dad watched Avatar the extended edition until 11:00 when we watched the ball drop in New York (New York is one hour ahead of Minnesota) and then we

January was incredible! My brain is overflowing with knowledge. I bet February will be full of sweet things and hopefully some warmer weather. Fifth grade a creative concert of new learning!

December Letter

Article posted March 7, 2011 at 06:20 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 186

Learning was exceptional in December! Once again, we accomplished a ton, created some unique projects, and we learned many new things. The Causes of war Projects, Watched the movie elf, and did my Diorama Project fascinated and taught me the most. I know you will be amazed as you read about them.

I learned so much from doing the Causes of War Projects.
I did mine on World War 2. Mine looked really cool at the end when it was all done, and it was a PowerPoint. That has been the best project we have done yet this year! It was really fun to do!

Doing the Diorama project was really cool I just have to explain how I did it.
For this quarter in the year we had to do either a Diorama, Triorama, or a Quadorama.

Finally, I need tell you about the movie Elf.

December was incredible! My brain just keeps expanding its knowledge. I can’t wait to see what January brings, hopefully some snow. Fifth grade is out of this world!
