Liz looked around and saw a cactus across a river. She jumped over using her long legs to propel her. Liz wasn’t an ordinary rabbit. She was a hare. Specifically, a jackrabbit. Jackrabbits are strictly herbivores. They only eat plants. Once over the river Liz used her long ears to listen for predators, and decided it was safe. She munched on cacti when a bobcat showed up looking for a meal. Liz leaped a good 5 feet into a thick bush. It hurt but Liz was sure it would hurt less than being a final course for the bobcat. While her predator looked away Liz leaped 8 feet behind a tree and farther away from the deadly creature. Jackrabbits could jump up to 10 feet at the most. Finally, when she was no longer prey, she ran at about, say, 25 miles an hour to get home. That’s another thing about jackrabbits. They’re fast. They can run up to 40 miles an hour at most. In the night, it was harder to get home. Most jackrabbits Liz knew were nocturnal. She walked under a ledge and returned home.
Since jackrabbits only live about 1-5 years, Liz didn’t want early death. She was 2 years old and on her own. Both of her parents had dies because they had become prey for a bobcat as well. All the more reason to be scared earlier! She thought about how she was different from other rabbits. She was 2 ft. like most rabbits and she was 5 lbs. Jackrabbits usually weigh around 3-9 lbs.
Liz went to sleep, but woke up to something nudging her. When she opened her eyes she nearly passed out. Her mom was standing in front of her!
They spent the rest of the day with each other and Liz found out that her mother escaped the bobcat while her father had not. Her mom had been searching for her for years! Liz declared this as the best day ever.
