Please leave a comment with advice for future ELA students.
Think about the life skills you have developed or learned this year that have helped you become more successful as a student. As we begin our last unit of the year, you will be completing a scavenger hunt of sorts. Before 8 P.M. Thursday, 5/9/13, you are to go to the last link (marked "DRAMA") under the "Related Links" on the left of the screen. Read through the information on the various tabs at this site and locate five facts you didn't previously know. Your five facts should be different from those of anyone commenting before you, so the sooner you respond the easier your task. Be sure to read through what others have said before commenting yourself. This will not only help you avoid duplicating their facts, but also help you study for your upcoming quiz, which will come from the information on this site.

Most of the characters in our class novel have gone through some kind of change. Name two characters you feel are dynamic characters? Why? Which two characters might be considered static characters? Find the Wit

Satire is the use of wit to mock social convention. It makes something we usually take for granted seem funny. Mark Twain satirizes many things in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, but because of the different dialect and some of the changes that have occurred in society, if we are not looking, we may miss the wit.
One example: "Huckleberry was cordially hated and dreaded by all the mothers of the town, because he was idle and lawless and vulgar and bad-and because all their children admired him so." In this passage he is satirizing the limited viewpoints of both mothers and children. Children often don't understand why mothers dislike bad influences and mothers don't understand why children are so drawn to "bad boys" who are irresponsible and out for a good time.
Before 4/29, locate one example of satire in the novel. Quote the example and explain what is being satirized. Be sure your comment is different from all those that have been posted before you. Your original comment is worth 20 points!

Reading IS thinking! We are constantly making inferences with song lyrics, poems, stories, commercials, articles and even comics.
1)Find one song that made you THINK and INFER.
2)Or find a commercial that made you infer.
3)Or find one excerpt from a piece of writing that made you infer.
4)Briefly comment on what clues you used and the schema (experience) you need to make these inferences.
5)Share the part of the lyrics, commercial or excerpt that made you INFER and tell us what you thought, in a comment, before Thursday,April 18th.

Today's topic is Bullying. Let's face it, anywhere where there are groups of people, there is a chance that there will be bullying. Have you been bullied? I think that most people would say that at some point they have felt bullied.
Read and explore the articles on the website. Then, create a blog under your own name (You'll need your password) that explains and answers these questions by 4/5:
1. What is bullying?
2. What kinds of things have you experienced or heard of that might be considered bullying?
3. What can a person who is a victim of bullying do?
4. What can you do, as a student of our school, to help put a stop to bullying?
