Super Seniors
We are a class of Year 6,7 & 8 students, aged from about 9 years old through to 13 year olds. We live in a small rural community in the North Island of New Zealand. We have a fantastic school where we are offered lots of fun and challenging learning experiences.

In Term 2 our class focus was on Food and Culture. We selected a country that is visiting New Zealand as part of the RWC, and looked at how culture around food is part of their lives. We chose a recipe from one of these countries and in small groups researched, cooked and served some dishes to our parents and teachers. We cooked frogs legs, apple puddings, canadian pancakes, bangers and mash and other delectable dishes. We were marked on preparation, presentation, cleaning up, history and research. What a lot of fun we had. Eating the food was one of the best parts!

Recently one of our Dad's organised a great trip for the class to drive deep into our local forest area to watch logging operations first hand. We drove in 4WD vehicles in convoy to watch chainsaws, loggging trucks, loaders, diggers with waratah heads and all sorts of other machines and men clearfelling pine trees. Thanks Mr Watson, parents and forestry operators for a great experience.

Last year we were lucky enough to have a visit from a GNS Scientist who was part of a team investigating what may have happened to the Pink and White Terraces during the 1886 Tarawera Eruption. He talked to us about what they scientists were going to do and told us about an Art competition where we had to depict what the bottom of Lake Rotomahana might look like. Well, we were lucky enough to have the winning artist Paige in our class and she won a whole class trip down the Waimangu Thermal Valley. Here are some of our winning art examples and also photos from our recent visit. The visit tied in nicely with our Integrated learning about disasters. Thanks to Paige, the GNS Scientists and the staff from Waimangu Thermal Valley.

We are well into Term 1 already and have a great class of 27. New Zealand has been devastated in recent months with the Christchurch Earthquakes and the Pike River Coal Mine Explosions. We have been looking at how we can be better prepared if a disaster should strike in our area. We held a black and red day to raise money for Christchurch and yesterday we visited the Rotorua Museum to look at the Tarawera eruption and compared this to the recent Christchurch earthquakes. We have also been focussing on making our writing much more interesting using a range of writing and language strategies. Click on our student names on the right to visit individual pages.

Well done everyone - you pulled out all the stops and gave a great performance on Thursday night. I was really proud of you all as I am sure your families were too. You carried the show off like professionals. I think you all deserve a holiday - let's have this next week at school and then you can all have two weeks off!!
See you Monday!

Week 7 in Room 4 has been very busy with our singing, dancing and acting practices taking up a lot of our time. We are also focussing on speech writing and presenting. Our recent writing focus of Persuasive Writing has been most helpful in writing our speeches as has our reading focus of using our voices fluently, with expression and intonation. All of these skills have been transferable across the curriculum. We have also been working on completing our Clown Day Slideshows and Reports and Slideshows and Reports about the Science Roadshow. We have also been using Voki to animate our reflections about our learning and blogs. Click on the students names on the right of the page to view our learning and be entertained.

This week we have been busy in Room 4 practicing for our Whole School Production which we will be performing in Week 9. We have been focussing on Persuasive Writing, Multiplication and Division, beginning writing our Speeches as well as beginning our investigation into "What makes a circus a circus?". We have had people involved in Daffodil Day fundraising for the Cancer Society, selling Milos for morning tea for fundraising towards our Year 8 Big Day Out as well as our usual Senior School responsibilities. Well done for being good role models Room 4.

Over the last few weeks we have been spending lots of time working towards our School Production which takes place in week 9. In between times we have been focussing on persuasive writing and also had a fun clown workshop and visited the Fonterra Science Roadshow. While our Year 7 & 8's were at Tech Arts in the last week of Term 2, the Year 6's were hard at work, designing cushions for our new library. First we chose some designs, and working in pairs, we sketched these onto paper and painted them. Next we shared our prototypes with the class and talked about contrasting colours, bright designs, designs which were going to be easy to transfer to fabric and designs which would appeal to students using the library. This is what we came up with. After the holidays we will start sewing and stuffing our cushions and designing and making some more.

On Tuesday our whole school visited the Tamatekapua Marae at Ohinemutu. Despite the persistent rain, we had a great day of teaching and learning. Thanks to Tashana who performed the karanga, Paige for her supporting role, Barachois for his whaikorero, Sean and Monaro who gave thank you speeches and to Charnce and Dante for leading our waiata. Thanks also to the Year 7 students who supported the Room 1 students on their guided tour. Thanks also to the parents who accompanied us and made the day such a success.

Last Monday our Year 8 students attended National Young Leaders Day. We were inspired by a range of motivational speakers who shared really great messages and spoke encouragingly of their own journeys to become leaders. What a great day.

This week one of our kind parents sourced some pumpkins for us. In keeping with our scary Scarecrow stories (click on a student name to check these out!) we spent some afternoons carving scary faces from them - view below if you are brave!

On Friday it was our turn to present Assembly. We produced a short show that presented our learning so far this term. It included the Banana Salute from Life Education, some ANZAC writing, gymnastics, autumn art, Narrative writing, a scarecrow dance, a presentation from our team entered in the Maggi Cook off, and a song from our very own school band. Well done Room 4 and thanks to our parents and audience who came to support us.
