Columbus Day

Article posted June 16, 2010 at 01:58 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1662

In 1492 Christopher Columbus brought the Eastern Civilization to the Americas. And since 1934 it's been a federal holiday. Everyone gets the day off. They can have the whole day to themselves. They can think about Columbus' great feat. But who does? Do you think about him while you enjoy your day? It's a big question, whether or not we should continue to celebrate it. In reality, most people only know that Columbus came and took the Americas for the eastern civilization. But he also in the process killed of thousands of natives and exploited land that wasn't his to begin with.

I don't think we should celebrate Columbus day because in my opinion he did more damage than good. The diseases his men spread had a horrific result and those alone killed off most of the natives. It's true that without him, it's possible that other voyages wouldn't have been made, and new discovery's would never have happened. But it's also possible that another explorer would've found the America's instead and we would be celebrating another 'hero'. If Columbus had never come, we might not be where we are today. However another strong possibility in that scenario is the Native population would still be the dominating people. Many of them were killed off from diseases that the Europeans weren't aware they were carrying. Another small part were actually killed by the Europeans. Columbus' people were cruel and selfish. They thought the Indians weren't human because they weren't Christians and they were different than the Europeans. Columbus' and his completely dehumanized them and took from they what they wanted. To the Europeans the Natives didn't deserve their land because they refused to exploited they land they lived on. Christopher himself wrote that the Natives were very trusting people and they would be easily turned to slaves. And now America thinks were should celebrate that act of cruelty.

Columbus enslaved, killed and dehumanized innocent people on a land he discovered. He had no respect for the land or the people who inhabited it. He thought they weren't deserving of the land because they refused to ruin it. So we shouldn't celebrate Columbus Day because he really was a cruel man who brought cruel people to ruin a land that wasn't theirs to begin with.

Gauridians

RHSH

All day's music of the green tower reaches the far borders of reality,

And stands true to the one deep blue call.

Stand up for the sky, and lower than ever before imangined.

Shout out the weight you carry,

Far more than the sky itself.

An enternity of labor,

Still the chourus rings out proud.

So stand tall the gauridians of passing,

and sing us a blessing forever.

Stock Essay

Article posted May 13, 2010 at 04:28 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1243

The company stocks I picked in my math class were Wal-Mart, Apple, and Sears Holding Company. I picked Wal-Mart because the stores are all over the place. They're convenient to most people and a lot of people take advantage of that and use those stores. I also chose Apple because I like their products and I know a lot of other people like them too. They come out with more complex versions of things they make and many people but them. They're also a well known brand. Last, I chose Sears Holding Company because I heard it was doing good and I see the stores full sometimes.

If I were to go back and make changes to my choices I would have done things differently. I would have picked less or none of Wal-mart because it didn't do very well and I ended up losing more money than it was worth. I would have bought more of Sears because it did very well.In the end it was the only stock to make me money. And I would have done more research before I picked my stocks. Two of the stocks I picked ended up collectively losing more than six hundred dollars. If I had done more research, that probably wouldn't have happened.

Now that I've done this project, I have some advice for anyone who's interested is buying stocks. Research the stocks your interested in before you buy them. Read up on their past from the last few months and see if they've gone down or up a lot. Pick your favorite stocks and have fun with it. If you have a good feeling about them, go with it. And sell when the stock price is high.

Alone

Article posted May 12, 2010 at 06:05 PM GMT • comment • Reads 93

Through the darkness, I cry

"Can you hear me?"

But my voice only echoes into the night.

Through the despair I ask

"Can you hear me?"

But no one will answer, no one will understand.

I'm alone in this place,

I cannot escape.

I need a savior, some one who knows.

But that person is too far away.

They can't hear my cry's of despair

They can't see my tears

Can't hear my sobs.

So I have to wait,

Wait for that person to show me the light.

Earth Day

Article posted May 4, 2010 at 06:16 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1193

We all care about the environment, but would you go through 87 pounds of trash to show it? The seventh graders at Rye Junior High did. We went through two days of trash from our lunch, to see what we throw away that can be recycled or composted. While some students suited in gloves and aprons dumped the trash at their feet, the rest of us waited in the side lines, wrinkling our noses and shrieking. Rice from lunch poured onto the plastic that protected the ground, and milk cartons flooded the area. Then the really gross stuff happened. The students started wading in ankle deep trash and picking through the scraps. This really got a squeal out of everyone. The people from Zero Waste Now instructed them to put the food in three buckets if the were recyclable, compost, or just trash. Fruits and veggies went into the Compost bucket as well as milk cartons. They only went in because the people from Zero Waste Now said that they were able to compost them at their facility. At the end they weighed the trash. We ended up with 25 pounds of trash, 51 pounds of compost, and 9 pounds of recyclables. The remaining weight came from bits and pieces of this and that that were too small to pick up.

But if you though digging through trash was gross how about eating from it? Freegans eat from the trash bags that people leave on the streets in big cities. But they do it to get a big message through. They can stay perfectly heathly by eating from trash. And they're normal people. One we learned about was a second grade teacher. But the trash we throw away isn't necessarily trash. In fact freegans are perfectly healthy people. In the video we watched, they showed us trash bags out side of a grocery store. They got pre-prepared salads from bags, bread and even some meats. They told us that they  take food off the line if they're close to expiring even though they might good up to two weeks later.

So remember to be more concious about what you throw away because it might be able to go to better use.

Forest Wife Scan

Article posted May 3, 2010 at 06:15 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1552

  • I chose a broken crown because in my book the main charaters are against the king.

  • The arrow and hood represent Robert, better known as Robin Hood.

  • The tree and flowers represents Sherwood Forest, where the Forest Wife lives and heals people.

  • The bushel of herbs are for the healing way of the Forest Wife and the way she used herbs to heal.

  • The border represents magic, because the forest wife was believed to be an evil witch, not a kind healer

The scanner was slightly hard to use and I needed help figuring it out the first time. Next time I'll make sure everything is exactly where I want it and it will be easier to figure out.

This speech for my Language Arts project was about the time I went up in a hot air balloon and got lost amongst almost five thousand people.
