Antarctic Flag

Article posted June 15, 2011 at 03:07 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1067

In Science class I made this flag for Antarctica. I made it like this because of the many countries that have bases on the continent. I took each flag for each country and drew it in a portion of Antarctica.

Math Project Reflection

Article posted May 25, 2011 at 03:15 PM GMT • comment • Reads 109

This is a reflection on a project we did in math. I liked this project and did my best on it and i think it shows within this writing piece.

From NASDAQ, to NYSE there’s many different companies to choose from within these markets. The stock market is extremely unpredictable, so how should we know which companies to invest in? There’s many steps to knowing what companies to trust, and to know which to buy and which to sell. Limited to three, i did my research and chose the companies i thought would do good, but did i know enough to trust in my choices?
As it turns out, for my project i ended up choosing Pier 1 Imports, Royal Caribbean Cruises, and The Home depot. There were many reasons for choosing these companies and how I chose them. When I chose Pier 1 Imports I knew this company had done well in the past because my math teacher had said so. Knowing this, I checked out the company online to find that it belonged to the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), and it sold home furnishings. Since we were coming into winter/spring I know that people like to get rid of their furniture around then, and get all new things for their home. My second stock was Royal Caribbean Cruises. This stock I didn't do much research on, but I know that a lot of people like to travel and go on vacation while on a boat traveling to different places in the world. My final stock was The Home Depot Inc. I chose this company because I am very familiar with it, and what it sells. The Home Depot offers many home improvement products, home furnishings, appliances, and building materials. Their focus is to sell things that make their customer`s home projects so easy, you can do it yourself. This chain of stores is widely known and many people shop there.
While doing this project I've learned that there are some things I could have done differently, and wished I had changed. One of the things I would have changed was that I should have done more research on each of the companies before I chose them to invest in. If I had, I would have found out more about the company itself and whether or not I should`ve invest in it. You would also have confidence in what you were investing in. Another thing I would change was my choice to invest in Royal Caribbean Cruises. I did not do much research on this stock and I didn't know if it would do well, and in the end I lost money on it. I would have gone back and chosen a different stock to invest in. The last thing I would have changed was I would have asked people in the eighth grade what stocks to invest in because they had done this same project last year and have experience with the stocks. They would know which ones did badly and which ones did well so I could make better choices on my investments. Despite the fact that I would have made some changes to my portfolio, I think I did well in choosing good companies and completing this project.
There are many things the people who are interested in investing in the stock market should know. One thing is to NOT invest in Royal Caribbean Cruises. This company fluctuated in prices quite often, and in the end did not do very well & lost me money. Another, more important thing to know is to not invest in any “iffy” stocks or one you do not know well. In the stock market anything can happen, good or bad. If the company seems it could go either way (do really good or really bad) avoid it unless you’re willing to take a risk with your money. Make sure you know the companies before you invest, which brings me to my next piece of advice. Do your research. Get to know the companies and what they do, and even check out how they`ve done in the past. All this will benefit you and the outcome of your investments. In conclusion, I’ve learned a lot about the stock market and the uncertainty it holds. With it being so unpredictable there`s only so much we can do to increase our chances of making money. This project has taught me and a lot of others how to invest stock market, and how to be smart about your investments in the stock market, of which the information we`ve learned will be useful in the future.
Through this experience with experimenting with the stock market i had learned many things. Into the future i may use this knowledge to my advantage in investing. With the little mistakes i made while doing this project, it taught me to always know about what your investing in and do enough research to trust in it 100%.

Reader`s Journal

A situation 'believing is seeing' is that when you admire someone, like a famous person or maby just a person, you dont see any other perspective, or opinion but yours: "That person is amazing!" (example). When people tell you otherwise you defend your opinion because you support that person and really believe they`re a good human being.

Beliving in something can give you inspiration for things you cant even imagine. It opens your eyes to a completely different world that has so many opertunities. One huge benifit to believing in something is that you can see it mentally. You think of it everyday, and you can see it no matter if you`ve seen it for real or not, you know what it looks like so you can see it. When you do believe in somethinglike this, you cant imigine it anyother way.

Living in Space

Article posted November 7, 2010 at 10:35 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1058

Living in space can be very different from living down here on earth. Especially when you’re on NASA`s space shuttle, the Discovery. For one thing, your weightless in space! You get to float around doing flips and having fun right? In the space shuttle, sometimes yes, but there’s much more to being aboard the Discovery. You were sent up there for a reason, you’re on a mission to do specific things and work for NASA. With doing all this work and how different it is up in space, how is living up there? How do astronauts do the things we do down here on earth, in zero gravity? This is how.

While the astronauts are in space they have their living quarters. This includes their living room, workout room, and living space all in one. On the space station there are two crew cabins, each big enough for 1 person. The third person on the space station can sleep anywhere, as long as they are strapped down. In space the amount of room you have is limited. Because the shuttle is not the biggest thing in the world, or space, the chambers are small and spaces can be tight

Although there is zero gravity in space, the astronauts in the space station or shuttle eat the same things we do, well… almost. Some things like salt and pepper are liquidized in order to keep it from floating around the cabin, getting stuck in filters and other harmful places. The space food used to be things squeezed out of toothpaste tubes, but now there are many different choices of what the astronauts can eat like fruits, nuts, peanut butter, chicken, beef, seafood, candy, and brownies. Drinks consist of coffee, tea, orange juice, fruit punch, and lemonade. Now that the people that are in space can eat more similar things to people on earth, the astronauts are very happy.

Like I said before, when you`re sent into space on the shuttle you were sent up for a reason. You were sent to complete a mission and do other work to help benefit our knowledge and NASA`s research. One thing astronauts do when they are in space is capturing/releasing satellites. They do this with a mechanical arm and the satellites also do scientific research while orbiting the earth. Aboard the shuttle the astronauts are constantly working to change filters, updating computer equipment, and doing medical experiments to determine how well their bodies are doing with the zero gravity environment. Being on the shuttle or on the space station means constant working so being an astronaut is not all fun and play

Although there are some similarities, being in space is a lot different than being down here on earth. Being an astronaut requires tons of training and knowledge, not to mention once you`re in space the amount of work is very great. Over all, the men and women aboard the Discovery and Space Station are benefiting our country in a huge way 24/7.
