Are You Prepared?

Article posted May 18, 2007 at 02:00 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 9527

To prepare for college, there is no substitute for getting a solid and broad academic education. This means you should take challenging courses in academic subjects and maintain good grades in high school.

A college education builds on the knowledge and skills acquired in earlier years.

Considering that all of you have plans to attend college eventually, do you feel that Croatan has prepared you for college?

Inspiration

Article posted April 18, 2007 at 01:49 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 192

To inspire means to influence or to motivate. Tell me who inspires you and how they inspire you. Is it your parents, your friends, a famous athlete, your minister, or someone else? Do they inspire you to work hard to obtain your goals, excel in your sport or hobby, or do they inspire you to always do the right thing? I'm interested in your response.

Compulsory Attendance

Article posted March 22, 2007 at 01:32 PM GMT0 • comment (11) • Reads 226

Changing the compulsory attendance age from 16 to 18 is one strategy states are employing in an attempt to reduce dropout rates. High school dropouts earn lower incomes and face higher unemployment than students who complete high school. Research indicates that dropouts are more likely to have health problems, engage in criminal activity, and become dependent on welfare and other government-related programs than high school gradates. North Carolina’s compulsory attendance age is currently 16 but some are attempting to have it raised to 18. How do you feel about this issue?

Is There a Correlation?

Article posted November 30, 2006 at 01:39 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 129

Keeping students engaged in, and attending school can be a challenge particularly for vulnerable students. However, research on school attendance consistently shows that low absenteeism is correlated to students' positive school behavior, participation in extracurricular activities, higher grades, and better long term educational outcomes. Do you believe this to be true? Why or why not?

Homework

Article posted October 27, 2006 at 02:13 PM GMT0 • comment (25) • Reads 130

Homework is intended to reinforce classroom learning and help students keep up with their studies. Teachers, parents, and kids often disagree about homework policies. Teachers view homework as a way for students to review and practice what they’ve learned in the classroom, explore areas of interest more than class time permits, and learn to work independently. Parents often view homework as the key to academic success and use homework as a window to see into their children’s educational experiences. However, some researches say homework does little to improve a student’s academic abilities and others believe homework is excessive and does more harm than good. I think we can all agree that homework is a good thing, but can there be too much of a good thing?

Journalism Students: I want your opinion but I also want you to research findings on homework. Take this opportunity to see how research on American homework compares to findings in other countries, especially those countries that are considered to be “advanced”.

Achieving Your Goals

Article posted October 19, 2006 at 01:20 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 108

Everyone knows what goals are, they are something you plan to do, be, or have. Everyone has goals in life, but not everyone achieves them. Goals force you to think about what you want and help you to take the necessary steps to attain your objectives. Both short- and long-term goals are important. Short-term goals are easier to complete and serve as a stepping stone to long-term goals. As stated in an old Chinese proverb, "The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step."

Tell me about your goals and what steps you have taken to achieve them. Who has motivated you the most? Was it or will it be worth the effort?

Have you been influenced by your peers in a positive or negative way and what was your reaction?
