Should the U.S. Continue to celebrate Columbus Day?
The United States celebrates Columbus day on the second monday in October and should never stop celebrating this discovery of our new land. Christopher Columbus started the discovery of the Americas of our modern world. I think that we should honor our heritage and hold on to our European culture. Christopher Columbus found our land and brought a new way of life to the land. Christopher Columbus's big discovery would go on to switch our culture to a new world. If it wasn't for his discovery no one else would of came and helped the discovery of every other piece of land. In my opinion we should celecrate Christopher Columbus Day for ever.
First I was saying if It wasn't for Christopher Columbus no one else like Hernando de Soto or Ponce de Leon would of thought there was land west. This was based on everybody else's thought that the world was flat but not for Columbus, he thought the earth was round and smaller than it actually is. And he took his knowledge and found the Americas. Secondly, He brought the culture and new religion that has transformed through our modern age. The people there before him might have had a culture butit was not as complex as what Columbus had showed these natives. With this it brought many new tools that Galileo and Aristotle thought of back in the Western world. These inventions consisted of navigational tools or hunting tools like the gun which brought many hunters going after all the buffalo for meat and fur. For me it is more important that he brought guns than didn't people might dislike this for wars and it not real sometimes you have to face this with violence. Finally, his conquest helped ceal permanent settlemens for North America. What he did was he took over these Inca's and yes Natives might be mad in what Columbus had accomplished but look at the world now the majority of them agree and that is why we all think this conquest was a success. My thought that his voyage brought us to where we are today.
This whole topic people like to take pro's and con's but when I look why we should and shouldn't celebrate this holiday it always seems to be that reason could have been on the pro side of the topic. Columbus showed me he found the land where our country is now. And it is not just me, the majority of our people like his accomplishments that he brought to the Americas including the conquest and new culture showing our european heritage. I want the United States to continue to celebrate this mark in history and it is a day where most people get out of school and work. But that is not just it folks, it was a point in history.

Portsmouth Bridges
The Bridges in Portsmouth are getting old including the Memorial and the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge or known as the middle bridge by the highway on the Piscataqua river bridge. I think they both look fine but all bridges have to come down sometime. I hear that the Memorial has 6% efficiency and it only has 2 to 5 years left. I guess it is getting really rusty in the last ten years. The middle bridge has 12% efficiency and 6 to 7 years left of use. They must replace these bridges if they are going to take them down. I think bridges are a beautiful thing and makes cities on the water light up at all times. I really like this quote, “We build to many walls instead of too many bridges.” I think what this person is saying is that it is better to open than close in life. The support of the bridge needs help and the current here is one of the strongest on the east I have heard and when I go out on a boat it rocks up and down. And the Sarah Mildred Long bridge is known as the middle bridge and that is what it looks like. The bridge is a double decker but only cars go on top and it looks really old and rusty and that bridge I think it needs to get replaced quicker than the Memorial because it looks worse. I think if they are going to take these bridges down they better spend the money and replace.

Higgins Armory Museum
A trip to Higgins Armory Museum can be very useful to topics of our middle Ages and how armor was used for. The Knights are in armor of very fine crafted wear at the high rate of the renaissance in the middle ages. You can learn about different types of armor and see how each was used. People can learn how it was to be a knight at these times and how they followed their code. Most people don't know in this time period that there were some women under armor taking place in these times, and you could find out these legendary warriors. Many displays shown here allow all people to learn about Medieval times.
There are plenty of different kinds of armor with many different uses explained in the museum. One kind is meant for combat consisting many different pieces of steel converted together to make an armored suit. Decoration armor had very little protection than others, but included very artistic details that made it look nice in parades or festivals. Tournament armor weighed the most of all three and thickest for jousting in competition. Weight and flexibility can be learned from Each kind of armor has certain uses for at special times in life.
It was mostly men in armor but in these times there was some famous known women who were leaders and defenders of countries. One of the most famous, "Joan of Arc" young but led France through many battles. Making all these women to support and stand up for her country is due to spiritual leads and inheriting from fathers. Some were of said to been in armor but no women ever was a knight at this time. So, we know we can get the look at each of these warriors and the experience in the atmosphere.
Here we can learn about the Knighthood of each branch which includes, "The Code of Chivalry." It was used to make the knights look experienced and all exact the same under a set of rules. The rites and rules of a knight in armor was strict that tied with religous beliefs. In the warfare they had to bathe and dress in a certain and proper way every time getting ready to battle. It is a great way of being in experienced training at a high level. This was a great way of organizing and keeping the military strong and under rule during the middle ages. You can see everything the knights had to go through a day and the religion practiced along the way.
As you could learn on this tour thoughts go up looking at these interesting artifacts such as Corinthian helmets from Greece. The Higgins Armory Museum shows visitors the use of armor and the displays of medieval armor. Mostly men had rites but not as much less for women than other times in this period, so you can see the female leaders and warriors. Exhibits and writings could show you well the knighthood of chivalry and what they used for horses. Medieval warfare and the way of living in this time period the, "Middle Ages" is learned well in these displays at the Higgins Armory Museum.

Conclusion
3 Restated topic --- What can be learned at the museum?
2 Brought closure to essay (Summed up essay)

Comments: Good overall format to the essay - intro-body-conclusion. The introduction needed to more info on the Higgin's Museum to set the scene for the reader, but has a good transition to the body. You needed a lot more research details & vocabulary to add depth of knowledge to the piece. The conclusion is a good effort, but the writing doesn't flow well and could be clearer

Stock Market Report
I selected Microsoft, Wal-Mart and Coca-Cola for my stock portfolio because they are all apart of my daily life and I had a feeling they would end up in the black and be a profit. I bought Microsoft because I wanted to buy a tech stock and everybody was buying Apple so I bought Microsoft so I could be different. Wal-Mart was one of my stocks because I like those stores that have like everything and what is better than Wal-Mart. I love Coca-Cola and it is my favorite soda and that is why I bought it.
My stock was losing and in the red so I would of made some minor changes to my portfolio. When your stocks are losing money another name for it is being in the bear market. I would of added more stocks into Microsoft because it was my only stock in the black. I would of deleted Coca-Cola out of my portfolio because it lost me the most money. With my shares in Wal-Mart I would not of bought as many stocks as I did. I bought 92 shares of Wal-Mart, instead I would of equaled it out.
For any future brokers I would recommend them to have their stock portfolio consist of at least one tech stock. There is always a couple of them always rising in the black. Before you buy shares of a stock I would research if they have been doing good over the year and if new products are coming out. When you are looking at your portfolio in the middle of your term if you see that there have been a high rise in price and other stocks in your industry are starting to fall it might be a good time to sell and be happy to be in the black and gaining money.

These last two or three weeks were based on the environment and the world leading up to April 22nd, which is Earth Day. We got to have a guest speaker come in to our class for a couple of days and show us videos like, "The Story of Stuff." In the video, it was these people telling us how bad humans are on helping the environment. They would say all these crazy facts and just put it out that might not even be true. When it was talking about the buying of goods they blame President Bush about how he told everybody in America to go out and shop. And of course, that isn't true it is just the same old people that think it is all our fault that the trash is building up and nowhere to go. I thought and how I always think, "that it is the people telling us what they think not what we think."
When in another video when it was based on the advertisement, telling students that when their kids they nag their parents until they get it and when something is not as totally cool as on television. Then the people in the video had to blame someone so they blamed the companies of making things so bad. I say, "the companies aren't to blame because all they want is to make a better product, and that is their job."
The next thing that we got to do is have another group of helpers come in and pick trash out of our garbage of the last two days. What we did is break the trash into groups Landfill, recyleables, or compost. There was a total of 85 pounds that our school would have thrown away. As you see in the picture we would dig through trash and sort it out. We all were amazed at the end when we weighed the three categories. The lowest amount was landfill with about 25 pounds. You would have been surprised where most of the world's trash goes was the least for our school.

This is a picture of artifacts from a book I read, Crispin:The Cross of Lead. I have a tree reperesenting the setting which takes place in the forests when he runs away. The King hat is for the character of the steward, he is the king of the land and wants to kill Crispin. The picture of what it looks like dirt is for the plot because Crispin has a bumpy road along the wayfrom running from the steward. The Cross of lead is for plot as well because it was his mothers who died which plots out the rest of the story. The juggling ball is for the character, Bear who is Crispins leader juggles along while Crispin plays his recorder. The weapon is for what the steward and his soldiers are trying to kill him with.

Mens Ice Hockey
Hockey is a sport that has transformed in history that is becoming very popular. The word hockey comes from the old french word, "hocquet". Ice hockey made its olympic debut in 1920 in Antwerp. It started out in the summer olympics but then it got changed to winter. A goal in hockey is the act of when a player shoots the puck into the opposing net. An assist is the the person that passes to the scorer. A hat trick is when a player gets three goals in a game. The goal line is the line that represents the line for the goalies and icing. When a player ices the puck its when he shoots the puck on the other end of the red line pass the goal line without any contact.
Most of these Olympians play in the NHL, but in February is usually the All-Star-Break but this year there was a treat for the players, to be honored and play for their home country. There are three positions in hockey. One is the goalie, each team has a net around six feet wide and four feet tall. Goalies have to be extra flexible especially when they go down in a butterfly position when both pads are layed down going wide. The next position are defensemen, there are two of them on the ice at a time. They are usually bigger than other skaters. They are the ones that protect the goalie and pass into the offensive zone. There is also the forwards that run the offense. There are three of them on the ice at a time. They have to be faster than all the other players. These skaters usually score the goal.
The pressure was all on Canada going into the 2010 Winter Olympics. For Canada who is all about hockey they had only won one gold medal in the event in the last 58 years. Russia had a very skilled offensive game. But all eyes were on the best Canadian team they had ever had. Sidney Crosby, NHL scorer and assistant captain for team Canada had high expectations for this year's squad. United states had had the youngest team in history since 1980. United States was ranked number six in the Olympic pole going into the games.
They started out with a win v.s. Switzerland and extended with a win against Norway. Canada played the same teams and won both until they would face off with the U.S. in the last round robin game. Everybody expected Canada to destroy these Americans. But United States got an early goal and took the fans out of it. The Canadian team would keep on bouncing back goals until the Americans took the game 5-3 with an emty net goal by Ryan Kesler as he said before the game, "I hate the Canadians." U.S. would roll to the finals with big wins over Swiitzerland and Finland. While Canada beat the next team Russia, knocking them out early, and a close win over Slovakia getting them to the gold medal game.
The bronze medal game was between Finland and Slovakia. Slovakia an unlikely team took a lead over Finland but then they bounced back and took over the bronze medal. While there was a lot of tension in the air going into the gold medal game, the Canadians needed revenge against this young American squad. The Canadians started the first period with a rebound goal by Jonathan Toews. The Canadians scored early in the second making it a 2- 0 game. But the U.S. bounced back and scored to trail by one. And with a minute left the Americans had pulled the goalie and needed a goal for overtime. That is when Zach Parise's rebound went past the left pad of Canadian goalie Roberto Luongo. But then in the first eight minutes of overtime everybody was playing their hearts out. With eight minutes into overtime Sidney Crosby burried a give and go pass from Jarome Iginla past star American goalie Ryan Miller.
This year's ending was a thriller to the two countries that played in it. This was the most watched hockey game ever. Even if people did not know what the sport was they were just cheering on their countries team. That shows that the Olympics can really bring people and fans together. To me, this was one of the best hockey games I have ever seen. All I have to say wait until 2014 in Sochi, Russia where the Americans will win the gold.

Hello my name Brodie Peterson and most people call me Sir Peterson. I am a 21-year old Caledonian warrior that has a wife and three kids. My large family has some huts in the Caledonian village of Dochgarros, at the top of the Caledonian canal. The males in my family have all been a part of the military while the women have a background of hardwork at home for when men came home. My little brothers who are not old enough to be in the military make blacksmith tools. Right next to our village there was a nice stream of fresh water that supplied our family very well. Timber was a useful supply to build our villages. Each village had forests usually in the outskirts, if you follow the river you will find the timber supply. I have just got word from General Anderson that the Romans are in our territory, which some are villages of friends.
So yes, General Anderson came into every soldiers village and wanted us to come to the fort to get some new weapons. I had to pack my bags quick and go to the fort right next to the border. I packed some uniforms along with some weapons and I was on my way with the General. My brother John had been coming along with us for his first time. He had been waiting to get out there along he was nervous. Our wives had been preparing us freshly cooked meals for us these last couple of days. Our sons have been making weapons and tools for battle. Romans would use these tools to copy invented weapons of their enemies. Our general is telling us to be ready for a new weapon they have brought to test.
We had a furnace or a fire to burn up these blacksmith tools. The romans used a furnace to heat up their baths and saunas. The women in Caledonia were responsible for sewing and weaving clothing for men and everybody. When the romans came in they had to know how to repair their own clothes. Other than water my family drank a lot of ale. It is grown a lot in our farm. Children take part in drinking this beverage also. Romans drank a lot of wine in their camps, amphora's were used for storing this wine. When we had got to the base of the fort we were brought to practice with weapons. We had used a lot of spears used for slahing and cutting through enemies skin. With the romans metal plate armour we need this extra damage on enemies. Protecting our own bodies we used a shield that was long enough to to block our whole bodies. General Anderson told us to shave upand get dressed in uniform for battle. He also said we weren't allowed to shave again until we had killed someone.
I was just about to go into battle when I had got word that romans had been back in Dochgarros near our village. I didn't know if they were ok or not but all I wanted to do is get back and help them. I went out and we were following along a river until we had seen enemy base we made camp away from them and was waiting for the time to attack. Me and my brother really wanted to sneak out and get back to Dochgarros. I wanted to go back and I couldn't I had to stand up for Caledonia.

New England
Factory so clogged
earlier it was so clear
now it is only clear so near
Clouds lie so low
nobody can even know
Air so soaked
Air so misty
It just looks so gloomy
Wait now its far
I can barely see a car
Clouds fly away
While the winds sway
I see the sun comes out
While the flowers begin to sprout
I see kids playing in the park
All the dogs begin to bark
Kids playing basketball
Kids playing baseball
Pitcher sets the mound
Sun comes down
Park gates close
All the kids say, “That blows”
The Kids go have dinner
Nobody knows who's the winner

MARTIN LUTHER KING
“I HAVE A DREAM”
Martin Luther King was a reverend in Atlanta, Georgia during the Civil Rights Movement. He was not happy about what was going on in the country at this time. He wanted all men to be equal to each other. He stood up in front of America and gave them the speech they needed at the time. “That all men are created equal”, he said. He wanted everybody to be judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin.
I think he did change our country because our schools are filled with mixed cultures and our clubs and sports teams have all types of people. To this day we have a black president leading our country. Martin Luther King would have been proud today if he was alive. I think he was right when he said, “It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream”.

The Legend of THE Cupcake
Bob the baker was stirring up a batch of cupcake mix when his assistant Joe came into the kitchen and said people have been complaining about our cupcakes. Bob said, “Who do they think they are, if they don't want to ear our cupcakes so be it.” Later on after Bob closed up the shop, the telephone rang and it was Cupcakis the god of cupcakes. Cupcakis said he had been hearing that Bob's cupcakes were not so good anymore. He said that he would be coming to the shop for a cupcake inspection.
Bob told his team Joe, Bill and Carl what he had discussed last night with Cupcakis. They said, “Don't worry Bob we'll think of something to make our cupcakes better. So they had Carl's son come into the shop to taste our cupcakes. First they tried using more salt in the batter. Carl's son Jimmy hated the mix. So next they dashed in some more eggs into the batch but that time Jimmy barfed. But they thought their cupcakes were hard lately. So they then tried pouring more milk into the batter. Then they gave it to jimmy. He thought it was still too mushy. And a half an hour later he had bad gas, and he didn’t want to eat another cupcake ever again. The team was talking at the end of the day, Carl said, “I think the batter needs that special ingredient, even know it might not be what we expect.
So they all went home that night and thought about the cupcakes. Joe had a very weird dream. He woke up in the land of cupcakes. He saw a live lawn gnome and said, “Where am I”? The lawn gnome replied, “You’re in Cupgnomeland, the land where lawn gnomes are the rulers of all cupcakes, instead of that wierdo Cupcakis”. Joe tried one of the cupcakes and said, “That is the best cupcake I’ve ever had in my life”. Larry the lawn gnome told him they get that a lot. Joe asked, “What do you put in the cupcake.” “We add sugar into our batch, people think it is terrible, but when you mix it in it tastes wonderful.” Then Joe wakes up and says, “WHAT”?
When Joe went into work that morning he told the team that they should add some sugar into the batch. They all looked at him as if he was an alien. Sugar had been known as the very bad taste in the world. The team had three hours until Cupcakis would be arriving, and he would not want to wait. Bob said that they should just go with their original recipe or else they might mess it up even more. They all agreed but Joe, who wouldn’t stop going in and on about the sugar. Finally the team made the batch with the normal recipe. When Carl had the final raw batter of the mix he sat it down on the table. Joe snuck behind him when he left the room and mixed in the sugar. Then Carl came and put it in the oven. When it came out everybody thought it looked marvelous. They wiped the icing on it and it looked even better. Cupcakis had just arrived to the bakery, and he was looking very hungry. Bob saw that the sugar had been out on the counter where the batter was before. Bob started screaming at Joe, because he knew it was him. It was too late to make another batch. They all hoped Cupcakis would like it. Bob passed the cupcake to Cupcakis. He took his first bite and thought for a minute. He took another bite and stands up. He started dancing and screaming about how that was the best cupcake he had ever had. The whole team thanked Joe and they all started dancing with Cupcakis. Bob and his team went on to be the number one cupcake company in the world.
THE END

Green November 16 2009 The town of Rye, NH needs something to get known around the world. My idea for it is to get an NFL franchise. This would cause less travel for nearby NFL fans. Normally people have to travel almost three hours to get to Foxboro, MA, and don't get me started on how to get out of that zoo. And most NFL teams are in a small town nearby to the city. Like the Green Bay Packers in Green Bay are basically like a Portsmouth kind of town. So we would have the name be out of Portsmouth and have the stadium in Rye. The NFL franchise would cause a bigger population for Rye. If we have more people we would have to make more stores and they would have great success. There would be a lot of team merchandise that would be bought, which would bring in big money. The team would cause a lot more jobs for the seacoast area. Do you know how many jobs an NFL franchise needs. There are hundreds of different types of jobs they need. During the off-season or whenever the stadium isn't in use the bordering towns can use it for youth and high- school sports. If we use the Rye Recreational area as our spot we could use the stadium. There won't be any cancellations for the games because the field will always be in fine conditions. There will be certain days where the field will be open to play with a certain purchase. The field can be used for concerts too. It will allow New England bands to grow more popular. The franchise would cost a lot of money, but overtime it would make big bucks. The team won't start off in its first few season doing great. An NFL team gets better and better as time go's on. The Houston Texans started in the early 2000's and they were known as the worst team then. But now since its been a couple of years they have great players and a money making franchise. Their wide receiver Andre Johnson is the best in the game. The point of this franchise is to bring a fan base to New Hampshire. This would provide so many jobs to the unemployed. The town of Rye and the state of New Hampshire wants to be known around the world. Wouldn't you want to have a professional sport in our area. We don't want to be known for having no jobs. We will be known around the world and you could help......THE END

JOE FLOOD
Joe Flood is an alcoholic that has been sober for about 30 years. He talks to children of all ages about making good decisions in life. He talked to us about stories that will help us in life.
I thought it was cool because he was sort of like what I am. He said he was a hockey player making the Varsity team as a freshman and hanging out with older kids. I play hockey and will probably make the varsity team as a freshman. He talked about as we get older our liver gets use to alcohohol as we get older. Like aft5er like an ounce of alcohohol when you are a teenager you will pass out. He told us that if you get hooked on drugs early that means you have a lower chance of stopping when you might actually want to later on in life. He talked about getting hooked on stuff other than drugs. He said take a person that likes ice cream, no loves ice cream. Have them take one scoop of ice cream and not have another for an hour. 9 out of 10 people would have another scoop during that hour, and that one person that didn't, was probably thinking about the ice cream.
Joe Flood taught me a lot about drugs and to make good decisions in life. I hope I can remember all this important information.

Dear Mom and Dad,
In the first module we did a lot of stuff similar to what I've been doing. It was kind of a review of the end of last year with some new fun things. We did a lot with with making tables into different types of graphs. The type of table we used to organize our data is called a frequency table. We used bar graphs and line graphs to turn those tables into something else. Bar graphs are good when you have a number representing on the vertical axis and usually a description or noun on the horizontal axis . Line graphs are a good way to put the stocks of a company into a graph, so you can see the increase and decrease.
In the beginning of the year we learned a lot about number tricks. They are a fun way to use math. We used them with shapes like circles and squares. We used them with variables and a little bit of algebra. One type was when you would take your home phone number and you would end up with it again. Number tricks was a fun way to do math.
We did a lot with probability. We learned about experimental probability and theoretical probability. Experimental probability is the amount of something actually happened. Theoretical probability is the amount of something that should happen. We used probability with, “Names In The Bag.” We all put our names in the bag and the first and the last people to get picked won. We counted the probability that a person would get picked. The probability was getting bigger after every pick.
In the first module we did a lot of things that make math fun. We did a lot more stuff than these things. I have to let you know the, “Math Song” was awesome. Everybody hated it, but me and Mark. The song was on the Order of Operations. I hope we do more fun things in the next module.
Love, WSRE

STRAWBERY BANKE
When we went to Strawbery Banke we learned about the history of Thanksgiving and where it came from. There are many different kinds of thanksgivings from many different cultures. They say it came from the pilgrims that came over from England, that settled in present Plymouth, Massachusetts. The first feast that the pilgrims were different from the modern Thanksgiving. The Thanksgiving we have now has changed a lot over the years. There are a lot of different recipes for thanksgiving. Certain foods change because of culture. We learned how to grind corn with flour for corn meal, some say it was used for toilet paper. We learned to store food for charity, you can put many different kinds of food one pillow case by twisting the ends and tying knots. The kids had to do a lot of chores, most of them had to do something to help with the food.

Pinwheels For Peace
In Art class for the first couple of weeks, we were working on pinwheels for “International Peace Day.” We decorated them with symbols of peace. They were very colorful and a great celebration of peace. We put them on the front lawn of the school in the shape of a peace sign. So they would blow in the wind symbolizing peace. If you listened to them closely, they made a really cool sound.

What We Know about Planets
So far this year we have learned a lot about space. We now know our Space Address. In space there are the “Inner Planets.” They are Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars. They are really close to the sun. One astronomical unit is 93,000,000 miles away from the sun. The next 4/5 planets if you count Pluto start stretching away from the sun. The planet that is the closest in size to us is Venus. The closest planet in size to our moon is Mercury. We are in the, “Milky Way” galaxy. The sun is 108 times larger than the Earth.
We learned how people knew the Earth was round. One reason was that when sailboats went over the horizon and knowing that there wasn't a crash, that's one reason. Or if there was a lunar eclipse and we could see the earth's shadow.
The fastest thing we know of is light speed. It is 186,000 miles per hour. If light could curve it could go around the earth 7 ½ times. We use it to measure large distances between stars.
