Columbus' Day

Article posted June 16, 2010 at 02:32 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1868

On every second Monday in October, Americans, as well as the Europeans celebrated the finding of the new world and the opening of new exploration. Christopher Columbus sailed over from Spain in 1492, his new findings had changed the world forever. The Teachers of schools have taught their students the Columbus was indeed the founder and have put him in this high place that he doesn't deserve. But is this true? Was he really the first to discover the Americas? Why not tell us? There are several reasons why I believe that we should take away Christopher Columbus Day.

To me it seems strange to give a person the credit of something they really didn't do. This follows for Christopher Columbus because he never ever set foot in either North America or South America, just in the Caribbean area. He committed homicide against the many Native Americans living in the New World. Nearly half or more of the population was killed from war or small pox the was brought over by the Europeans. Many of the great civilizations were murdered by Columbus and his conquistadors through out their conquests for gold and riches. He was also completely wrong with his thoughts of the new world. He believed that that the Americas were Asia and China and gave the native people the wrong names. By naming that second Monday in October Christopher Columbus Day, we not only give Columbus the title of finding America when it was already inhabited, and also already been found by the Vikings, but we have dishonor America's Native Americans. They were here long before the Spanish came along and rediscovered the new world.

An agreement between the two Columbus sides may be to give Columbus' Day the honor of America in general, similar the 4th of July. By naming it this, we have taken away the judgment of the people, and left the discovery of America to the real founder. Although, through all the pros and cons of Christopher Columbus' voyage and discovery did indeed change the world forever.

Bridges

If you listened to the many great giants of the land and sea, you may see that they are on their last beam. Rust has over come near to everything on their skin, leaving the once new and solid structure slowly crumbling to the ocean under neath. The sight is poor to see, but still beautiful in the 'old bridge way '. It may break, or it might shatter. It might fall, or it may dive, into the flowing salt water down beneath. Leaving the people with one less passage to the other side. Leaving some lives and routines broken for the time being. Lost in the memory of the long lived Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Stock Market Report

Article posted May 13, 2010 at 01:56 PM GMT • comment • Reads 114

Stock Market Report

I began to invest in the stocks in which I based on from popularity and whether or not I was familiar with the company. With my first company, Apple, or AAPL, I based my buying on the products. I knew that there would be another idea coming out that would make millions, so to stay on the safe side, and to stay in the range of affordability, I bought ten shares of Apple. Buying Google, or GOOG, was a similar process for me, but instead of falling and rising again, it just fell and stayed low. I “percussed” Google because I thought that, because it is a popular search engine, and had successful products, that it would be a good deal. I got shares in Polo Ralph Lauren, or RL, because I was familiar with it. The stock price seemed high enough, but still low enough for buying numerous shares. I ended up with twenty-eight shares of RL.

If, for me a stock was prosperous and was making a substantial profit, it would be kept. But, like Google, if the stock did nothing but drop and lose money, or go through a loss, I would get rid of it. So, if I had a choice to get rid of Google, I would go for it. In the beginning, Google was a really great stock, it made a lot and if it dropped, it would only go down a couple dollars. But, later in the years it dropped and didn't quite make it back to the top again. This was due to the new unpopularity of some of their products, and they weren't being sold in big money making places anymore. Apple and Polo Ralph Lauren have gone though ups and downs, but not bad enough to make me dislike it so much to get rid of it like I would Google. If I could, I would buy more stocks in both of them.
Buying stocks is a risky business, it all depends on the market. The advice I would give to one who is buying a stock in a "big" company would be to find this one factors in the company: the popularity of the product or store, knowing this lets you figure out if that company is prosperous and is a money maker. Advice on buying and selling from me, would be, when buying a stock, try to get the company at its lowest share price, but be sure that it will rise back up again. That way you have, in some words, bought the stock at a lower price then its worth. When that stock has made enough money for your liking, that would be a good time to sell it. Of course these are just some of my ideas on what somebody should look for in a stock, but when you try buying your own shares in companies you'll get your own idea of things.

Higgins Essay

Article posted May 3, 2010 at 04:00 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1213

The Higgins Museum If one was to compare the designs of armor that are used today, and the designs of armor used back in the Middle Ages, Greek and Roman times, we can see the similarity of self-protection. If you are curious about this transformation, then a visit to Higgins's Armory Museum should be on your 'to do' list. It is one of the most impressive collections of actual armor and artifacts, and the biggest private collection in the world! To think, something of such historical importance is right in New England, just a quick ride off the highway in Worcester, Massachusetts. The founder, John Higgins, began to find his fortune in his steel company. Later, when he gained enough money, he and his wife spent the rest of their lifetime collecting armor, weapons and information. In 1929, he built a four story building to store everything after he and his wife had been living with the armor in their house. The building itself was designed in a Gothic style. This form of architecture allows in more light, and is pointed upward because the people wanted to go to heaven. On John Higgins' death in 1961, the building was given to the public. Information in the Higgins's Museum is plentiful, from the types of armor that were used, to the designs of each type, and to the weapons used by and against the knights. There are three major categories. First, for show, second for tournaments such as jousting, and third for battle. Usually when a rich lord or king wanted to show off their wealth, they would turn to "parade" armor. This type of armor was heavily decorated, and usually was up-to-date with the latest fashion. Some went as far as engraving the metal with various stories, or pictures, like one of the Lords of Germany in the 1600's. This specific piece of armor is the most valuable in the entire Higgins Museum. It is worth nearly eighty million dollars, as well as considered priceless. Armor was also used for tournaments. Jousting was one of the most popular games in the Middle Ages. Two men on horses, covered head to toe in what was around 100 pounds of armor, would come running at each other on horses while pointing wooden sticks at one another. The players were most likely to fall off the horse, so, they needed a lot of protection. Their helmets or helms had just a sliver of visible area and if the wooden sticks, also known as polls, pierced through, the splinters from them go flying every were. And their chest plates were double plated because the wooden poll was to hit them there. Armor was mainly used for battle. Mostly the rich, or people who could afford the armor wore it. During the sixteenth century, the wealthy would wear decorative armor to battle so enemies could tell them apart from the poor peasants. Unfortunately, this tactic didn't always work as well. Since the enemies could tell the rich from the poor, if they captured the rich, they would get a higher ransom for the family. By the 1680's, there wasn't any armor worn to battle at all. In order to protects the vulnerable points of the body that the armor had not been able to cover, knights covered gaps with chain mail. Some put steel plating over the chain mail to make it extra durable and have less of a chance of penetrating to the skin. Both the chain mail and steal plating alone were weighed up to 15-30 pounds, and 40-50 pounds in the thirteenth century. Chain mail had both it's pros and cons. A good side to it would be that it last through sword slashes, and it was light weight compared it the steal armor. As everything, it had a bad side, fauchards, or spears could go right through the mail if were thrown hard enough. Steel plated armor, on the other hand, was not light weight, and spears had less of a chance of piercing through. This type of armor was easy to work in, it had joints that over lapped each other so the knight would be able to move around. Because of these handy abilities, steel plated armor was used for nearly three hundred years. Fonding just the right weapons to kill a knight was difficult. They had thick and strong armor, and rode on swift horses. Footmen had to adapt their weapons to this challenge. Then they came out with different ways to hook onto a knight and pull him down off of his horse, and techniques of keeping a weapon strong. An example of this would be when a knight needed to find a way of stabilizing or strengthening the spear, they would stick it into the ground and step on the ground that was bracing the spear. That way when the enemy knight came charging toward him, he could jump away so he wouldn't get hit. In the 15th Century, knights used cross bows, although they weren't very affective, groups of men carrying these would shoot at the same time making a shower of arrows on the enemy. Also, three pronged infantry spears were used. They were the tool that hooked onto the knight so the attacker could yank him off of their horse. Glaves were used in battle as well. They were long spears with a knife-like blade, these spears could pierce through steal armor and kill the knight, making the job of killing the knight easier. The knight on horse back used many similar weapons against others. Although it might have seemed hard to hold a spear while riding a horse, well it was. The riders had made it easier by wearing a holder under their arm so they could have the spear stay put and not have to divert as much attention to it as before. It wasn't easy to kill a knight as you may now know. All of these weapons were modified to kill the knight, one of the most important jobs of a battle-man. Armor and weapons were essential in the Medieval times. The weapons and sharp and effective, and did their job. Armor back then was like owning your very own Ferrari nowadays. You could deck it out in practically anyway. There certainly is a difference between the armor used today and the armor that was used "back in the day". Full body armor is not used, and spears and swords aren't a common as before. This information is just a mere example of what can be seen and learned a the Higgins's Museum, from the fascinating exhibits to the great tour guides. Go see for yourself! TJJO

What we have learned...

Article posted April 21, 2010 at 02:03 PM GMT • comment • Reads 77

On a rainy friday morning, the RJH's 7th grade filed onto two busses headed for the Higgin's Armory Museum. The founder, John Higgin's, was origanily a steal producer. He and his wife travled the world collecting armor from Ancient times. They later opened the museum to the public after John died. The museum offers a lot of imformation on Europe's Midieval times. There exibits on armor, weapons, and jousting. My favirote part of our tour were the armor exibits, to me, they were very fasinating because it a bit hard to believe that that armor was worn in battle begore and that someone 1,000 years ago could have died in it. if your interested in armor or midieval times, take a visite to Higgin's Armory Museum.

For the beginning of our 3rd trimester, we, as a 7th grade have been learning about how to save the earth from this "Global Warming disaster" that WE have caused. Our teacher haad even gone as far as bringging in someone else to explain how the polar bears are dieing, And how the human race has been killing the planet, and that if we don't do anything soon we were bound for doom. This I highly disagree with. First of all, the polar bears are NOT dieing, the researchers who were doing the study only found four bears, who hadn't died from the ice melting, but from sivear storms. Second, global warming is a lie. To me it seems that our teacher is trying to, hypotheticly, poison our minds. She had us watch three movies that are all pro-global-warming. The first movie we watched was called, "The Story of Stuff". This movie has been on news stations that have stated that this movie is full of libral ideas. We are being filled up with lies that aquese us, of poluting our planet with trash, and cutting down 95% of our tree resorces. WE also watched a movie called "Trashed". This movie stated that people were ruining the Earth with trash. They shared that freegans, or people who scavenge for food on New York City's streets are people how have taken one of the first steps in helping renew the planet. but these people, some atleast, have no home, let alone any healthsherince. What happens if that person gets sick? Or Hurt? Whop will pay for the doctor? You and me thats who.

Over the summer of 2004, my family went on a sailing trip around Maine and the coves. My brother and I use to ride on a diny that was tyed to theback of the sail boat, it was for going into the docks and also exploring the shore. But this one time, I was alone in the diny and riding over the waves while my brother and family were loungeing about on the deck. A speedboat had just gone by causing large waves to form. I didn't expect it but the next thing I nkew was that  I did a back flip in to the water and was watch the sail boat float away with my family on it. My frantic screaming caught my fathers attention to the problem. Quickly my grandfather some how turned the boat around, and my dad grabbed the bouy hook, and hooked it on the back strap of my lifeg jacket and houisted me up to the deck.

-Alpine Skiing-

Super Combined

Alpine skiing, also known as downhill skiing, is an Olympic sport. It evolved from cross-country skiing and was named for the European Alps where it originated the late 1880s.
The main overview of the sport is to go through all of the gates set up for the run down the steep vertical mountain. But if any gates are missed, the athletes must go back and make them up. There are different events in this sport, such as the Super combined. These are the basics of he Super Combined: an athlete must go on one downhill run, followed by one slalom run using the shortest course, when completed, the times are added up then compared to determine the fastest time. There are different times taken during the specific parts of the run, these times are called intermediate time. An equipment controller is a designated person who checks the athlete's equipment to make sure they are abiding by the rules. These are some of the terms used in Alpine skiing.
Skiers must train to maintain their form while skiing, in order to make strong muscles, athletes must work out. These strong muscles help keep the participant balanced and keeps them from falling. This time spent in the weight room is called peak condition. Skiers must also work on maintaining their mental condition, this is called mental fitness. Athletes must sharpen their confidence and improve their mental game.
Now that you understand the basics of Alpine Skiing and the Super Combined, you can understand what reallygoes on, on the mountain. On February 16th, 10:50 AM, the ladies super combined took place. In the Super Combined Downhill, there were three medalists, in first place was the USA's Lindsey Vonn, in second, Maria Reisch from Germany, and in third, Julia Mancuso from the USA. The medalists for the Ladie's Super Combined Slalom were, in first place Maria Reisch from Germany with the gold, second, with the silver, Julia Mancuso from the USA, and third, taking home the bronze is Anja Paerson. In men's Super Combined Downhill Alpine Skiing, on February 21, 2010 at 9:30 AM. Taking home the gold in this event was Lund Askel Svindal from Norway. In second place with the silver, was Dominik Paris from France. And taking home the bronze, Carlo Janka. In the men's Super Combined Slalom the medalists were, Bode Miller in first from the USA, in second Ivica Kostelic from Croatia, and in third place, Silvan Zurbriggen from Switzerland.
Alpine Skiing has been a sport for many people, including families. It is supported in many countries, including the USA, and Canada, as well as many of the countries in Europe. Many Olympic medallist have started with a dream to win the Olympics, they have followed their dreams and made it this far, congratulations to them.

Romans in Scotland

Roman Soldier - Name: Romulus Nestongos TJJO!! 2/16/10
My name is Romulus Nestongos, and this is my story of my first battle with the Celtic people. When I came of age, 20, to join the Roman army, I was ecstatic. Ever since I was a small boy I had always wanted this. But now that I am in the army, training, and working I'm beginning to think again. I know that I should be honored to be here, but this just isn't my life.
I'm set to leave in a week, to trample over the Celts. My commander says that they're animal like, that they are very uncivilized because they don't have cities but tacky villages with no roads and that they wear animals on their backs. Although there are good things about this situation. I have all of the supplies that I need, for example, we are stocked with weapons, a kit bag, in which I store all of my food and utilities, armor and a cloak. Our training is a disciplined process, we must learn many battle forms, such as the one that was used in one of the Punic wars in my father's time. I've also wondered if the Celts has this sort of disciplined organization.
It in now time for me to take my leave for Ireland. I've been away from Rome for 3 months now, and I dearly miss my family. I have been walking all my way, and I must check my shoes every night before I sleep because the hundreds of nails in the leather always fall out. The nights are cold too, but luckily I still have my warm cloak in good shape. We've seen signs that the Celts had been here. There are fire pits and left over wood piles, I am surprised that they haven't disposed of it so that we can't live on the land. My barrack is very crowded, I have all of the largest soldiers in my room. We have just gotten our supply of sewing bobbins, mixing bowls, dormice, and cooking pots. I am very grateful for this because I have discovered a large hole in my tunic. I think the dormice have gotten to it.
Tomorrow is our first battle with the Celts, I am afraid, but must hide it for it would be disgraceful to my family. All of my supplies and weapons are gathered and ready. I must take a trip to the baths before, for I feel strangely dirty. It is the day now, and I am ready. My first impression on the misfortune of the Celtic village was that it was dirty and the stench compared to our Roman forts. We were told to take the women and kill the boys, I think of it as cruel, but others say it is this way that we show them that we are here, and we "mean business". I noticed the weaving loom and cauldron in one of the village houses as my fellow legionaries and I tare it down underneath the screams of the people. The warriors looked liked like bears, they as well frighted me. I have killed two men already, all by mistake. I have wished not to kill, for it leaves a guiltiness on my shoulders. The animals I do not mind as much killing, so my commander as sent me to the disposal of them. Their cries are heart piercing, but I try to push it out on my head.
Finally the battle of done with, and we have lost ten men. and have seven wounded. I was attending one of them when one on the Celts, hiding from underneath the rubble came up and stuck me with his seemingly huge fist, leaving a large welt in my back, jaw, and shoulder. To my fortune, he was killed by one of the legionaries before he could do any more damage. We have started to begin to build a city in the remains of the village. It has been a year and a half since I have been home. My injuries have healed and presently I am working on building a house in the new city called Rome, it is going to be another replica of the mother city Rome. And this is the house that I'm going to accept for my pay, I will then plan to sell it, and make my way back to my Rome.

Hiding

Fog is my darkness,
It lets me hide from life.
takes the burden of the day of my shoulders,
and throws it far, far away.
It blankets me with its husky warmth.
wipes away the tears rolling down my face.
the tears of regret and sorrow,
the tears of others.
no one will see me,
the fog is to thick to pass.
but the crying stops.
and blackness cuts through my mind like a blade.
I turn down and drift away with the fog,
just like the rest have.

MLK Speech Paragrah

“I Have A Dream” is a famous quote coming from a speech spoken by one of our fellow Americans, Martin Luther King Jr. on August 28, 1963. He was a preacher, a doctor, a speaker, and a father. His speech touched the lives of many, he spoke of freedom between races. That Americans, both black and white “would be able to sit together at the table of brotherhood”. He spoke of a new way, a new way without racism, that one shouldn't “judge another by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character”. At the time many citizens weren't treated equally. Martin Luther King Jr. was black himself, as well as many of the nations population. And he knew that this time of despair would have to come to an end. He let that day, August 28, 1963, be the end. This dream was and is loved through all hearts even no we the people are still working on it to this day.

LIES

By: TJJO

Zeus was strolling through the gardens one day, unconsciously directing himself toward his palace. He was thinking of the afternoon's school lunch, Mac n' cheese. The pasta was well over done and the cheese was very bland. Then his thoughts drifted to Hera, his girlfriend. He pictured her in her summer beach dress, golden hair flying and her sweet, melodious voice calling him to her. He knew that she was truly the love of his life.
Zeus was nearing the grand steps to his palace, when he glided in with much rhythm in his walk, his stride broke and felt some knot in his stomach that declared that something wasn't right. He flew upstairs into his stocked up armor room. Searched around frantically for some sort of glitch, then, it struck him. His all magical and powerful sword was gone! And sure enough, the case it was supposed to be in was bare, not even a hair was left.
Wilbert was scuttling through Zeus's garden at the time, with some sort of glowing sword, belonging to Zeus. He was tumbling and tripped over lovely garden pieces and roots of glorious fruit trees. There wasn't a thing in the world that wouldn't hear him. When he became aware of that, he quickly hastened his sloppy run to a gentle but quick walk. The plan brewing in his mind was surely cruel.
Wilbert was once the goddess Hera's ex-boyfriend. He was madly in love with her. Well, who wasn't. She was gorgeous. She and Wilbert had been on a date at the movies. They were watching some cheap romantic comedy. He never really realized the point of them, none the less he still didn't like them. But Hera insisted on going and he couldn't bear making her unhappy, so he went anyway. While they were walking into the theater, they noticed a large commotion on the back area. Hera was curious, so she towed Wilbert behind her toward the crowd. In the center of the mob there was a strikingly handsome man looking very pleased with himself. Probably because he had to two hot girls on his lap. When he looked up at the new members that joined, he right away noticed Hera blushing. Wilbert wasn't so sure about the situation so he reluctantly yanked her out, and pulled her to their seats,on the other side of the theater. Then Zeus got up, plopped the women on the seats beside him and darted after Wilbert and Hera. When he reached them, Wilbert was sweating buckets and Hera was trying to break free to get to Zeus. Wilbert didn't know what to do when Hera was squirming out of his wimpy hold on her. When she got loose he knew at that moment that he had lost her forever and wasn't going to get her back. By this time the movie was beginning and people were settling down in to there seats. Zeus scooped up Hera while going in for a kiss, there was no stopping this. Wilbert was horrified and trudged out of the movie theater altogether in disgust.
After that night Wilbert and Hera were no more. Zeus had a new girlfriend, and Wilbert never went to the movies again. So now he was seeking revenge against the two of them. His plan was official. He would steal the sword. Check. Blame it on Hera when Zeus asked him. Hera would get mad at Zeus for suspecting her. They would break up and ding! Ding! Wilbert would have Hera back in no time! It was perfect! By now Wilbert was home and hiding the sword under his bed by pushing all of the trash and useless stuff out of the way.
He then ran back to the palace to pretend that he needed help with a math problem from his previous math class that day. When he entered the great entrance, there was a large commotion up-stairs. There Zeus was throwing every morsel of armor, clothing and furniture, that was in his way of finding his precious sword, down the stairs or were ever necessary. Wilbert was at the top of the stairs and called out for Zeus. Zeus didn't even break from his frantic search. So Wilbert slyly entered the room, prepared for any flying thing coming his way.
Zeus shuddered at his presence, for he never really like Wilbert that much, and didn't want to interfere with him because he was aware that he might cling to him. On second thought, he really didn't like him. What ever he was doing in his house better be good or Wilbert would be the next thing airborne. Wilbert scrambled to his side. He deliberated whether or not to make a run for it or go ahead with the plan. And he went with it. Wilbert consciously asked Zeus for help on his math homework, and could see that Zeus was getting irritated. Zeus answered saying it was the best time for tutoring and rather he came back some other time. Now Wilbert was the one irritated, but he wasn't going to blow this chance he had to nail Hera.
Then he spoke again, attempting to be concerned. He asked if everything was alright and if he could do anything to help. Zeus decided to dish it out to Wilbert that his all powerful sword was missing and that he should leave before something that to do with limbs breaking were to happen to him. But Wilbert, the least bit worried, acted like he was deep in thought, then offered his false information about Hera being the thief of his beautiful sword.
Zeus was speechless in reaction to the news. He stumbled over to Wilbert for support. Wilbert reluctantly offered his boney shoulder. Zeus was jumping to the conclusion that Hera had gotten jealous of his awesomeness and took his one most treasured thing from him other that her. But how could she do such a thing to him? What was wrong with her! Wilbert looked at Zeus with a worried look, phony of course, and asked him if he could help. Zeus opened his mouth and whimpered, he was in the state of falling to pieces, crumbling to the ground.

Collage

Artist Statement

The basis of my collage is from the colors and the words and feelings of joy. I was looking through magazines with home improvements in it and crafts. There were scenes like a car with a sign on the back saying, just married, and lots of flowers surrounding it. I want people to brighten up when they see it. For example if they were sad, become happy, seeing the colorful pictures and flowers. In order to create this I had to cut out many pictures that met my theme from a magazine, and then glue them onto a canvas with mod-podge. After, I put gesso onto the spaces where I wanted the words joy to be. When it dried I put yellow paint on the white gesso. I was inspired by color and lively things. Something that made my piece successful was the blending of the colors and the way the text stood out from the rest of the collage. I was glad my finished product can out the way it did because the yellow really went with the back ground colors. And I hope that by using these colors it will make people happy and better. TJJO

Joe Food came to our school to tell us, the 7th grade the hazards of drugs an d alcohol. From being a user of those materials himself for about 28 years, he has come it to tell the our 7th grade the lessons he has learned. And that what could happen to kids who use drugs at a young age. For example, a girl's boy-friend had died from alcohol poisoning. Alcohol poisoning is when your liver gets too much alcohol in it, and poisons it. They were at a party and hadn't had any alcoholic drink because they were too young. Then the girl decided to leave because it was getting late. But he stayed, and played games that had the player either drink some beer/wine or do something else. He died after he got home.

Joe also taught us what smoking does to you. And how drugs get you addicted. He told us to ask our parents about the drinking and smoking background of our family because there is a better chance of you to become an alcoholic if there were people in your family who were. I remember him telling us that we had the choice to try it, and it was up to us. This call was interesting and helpful for the future.

Persuasive Letter

Article posted December 3, 2009 at 06:29 PM GMT • comment • Reads 73

I think we should have more town stores in Rye because the stores would provide more jobs, less energy and gas would be used for transporting things. Having more jobs means we will have the population grow. If people started farms, we could buy food locally instead of getting food imported from say, California. If food was grown locally there would be no need for lots of energy to be used because the food would be transported from short distances. Having an independent town with its own food supply and assortment of jobs and stores for citizens to do, the town of Rye can be brought together.
If Rye was less dependent on other states and countries for food, we can become more successful and prosperous. There is a possibility that there will be more land required in this process, however not so much land that has trees and uninhabited land will be necessary. For example, there are a number of properties for sale, that haven't, or hasn't been used for a long time. These properties can be bought by new comers, thus helping the population grow. Although some of the Rye properties are more expensive. But, the property would have to be by the shopping area is. People would have one area of town crowded, and the other part have lots of land and space.
First there would to be a list of some sort of the land that is for sale so people can debate on whether or not to buy this property or that. After the selection of property, the person would then begin with manufacturing the produces and so on. When the to-dos are done, he/she could then start to employ people who are in need of jobs. And if the business is close to the majority of populate that part of town, customers could walk or bike to the shop instead of driving or using energy or gas.
I think we should have more town stores because there would be more jobs and less energy and gas is used. Some people are against this idea but, this shopping area will be in an area in town with more people. Thanks for reading!

Strawbery Banke

During our field trip to Strawbery Banke, we were shown different exhibits that showed the evolution of Thanksgiving throughout the years.

In one exhibit there was an elderly woman, she was married to the Governor at the time. She lived in a large 3 story house, now historic of course. She had many children but many died from different things, such as disease. She later took on one of her grandchildren because her mother had died, she took care of him.

During the Thanksgiving time she would give food such as pies apples, flour, sugar and other ingredients to poor people because they didn’t have as much as they did. And it was a time of sharing and giving thanks for what they had. The children and maids would put the things into a pillowcase or bag and tie a knot to separate the items.

Math Letter

Article posted October 28, 2009 at 01:29 PM GMT • comment • Reads 99

Dear Brother,
Over the passed weeks of school, my grade has been working on Module 1 in Math class.
Module 1 was a review to me of graphing, frequency tables, exponents and probability. I also learned how to do the basics of algebra. My favorite three subjects in this module were exponents, probability and graphing.
In the beginning of the first week of school we were given a take home quiz called analyzing a
a graph, we had to find a graph in either a news paper, or magazine. We found the basic information about the graph, such as what the graph was about and the item or thing the graph was representing. This test was to help us better understand graphing, and new techniques. I also reviewed what bar and line graphs are used for, for example bar graphs are for surveys, and line graphs are to show the increase of thing such as stocks, over time.Probability was fun, our assignment was to do an experiment either with a partner or alone (I worked with a partner). My partner and I drew different colored M&Ms from a brown paper bag. We had 10 M&Ms for each color, red, orange, yellow, green, blue and brown. So in all we had 60 M&Ms and we had to pick them out 120 times, and put them back after each draw. Our theoretical probability was to to get 20 M&Ms for each color. But our experimental probability was 28 red, 17 yellow, 23 orange, 20 green, 16 blue and 16 brown M&Ms, as you can see the green turned out to fit the theoretical probability.
This module was great review for me. And I can't wait for the next one, to learn more fun and interesting things.
Sincerely,
TJJO

Little Hannah came in today with a bundle of flowers,
She set the on the table and darted to sea
William she wed, down at the sea
Then she fled, from the sea
She ran home for her flowers,
But they were gone, gone at sea
And soon would she.

(Part 1) Our solar system contains nine planet, and one star, the sun. The first planet nearest to the sun is Mercury, it is 0.4 light years away from the sun, 277 times smaller than the sun and is brown. Second comes Venus, it is 0.7 light years away from the sun, 113 times smaller than the sun and is a dark brown color. Then comes our own planet, Earth, it is 1 light year away from the sun, 108. times smaller than the sun, and is blue, green and brown. Earths moon is 416 times smaller than the sun and is a grayish color. Thirdly comes Mars, 1.5 light years away from the sun it is 208 times smaller then the sun and is a brown color. These four planets are the closest to each other than any of the planets in our solar system.
