Should We Continue Celebrating Columbus Day?!?

Article posted June 14, 2010 at 02:45 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1400

For Many years the U.S. has been celebrating Columbus Day. The U.S celebrates it on the 2nd Monday in October. Columbus sailed to the new world in 1492. Many people think we shouldn't celebrate it but other people think we should celebrate Columbus day. I think the U.S should keep celebrating Columbus Day. Columbus really showed the America's to Europe so we should keep celebrating it. He is part of the reason America is how it is today.

First we should keep celebrating it because Christopher Columbus helped the natives. He gave them valuable technology. Such as the wheel. Before he came they didn't have the wheel or any other technology. Also before he came the natives weren't able to exploit the natural resources or the world so when Columbus got there he did. People who are against Columbus day day that he just came and took all their riches but before he got there the natives weren't even taking any of them

Second many people believe that we should celebrate the Spanish or Italian heritage instead of Columbus. They think this because the Spanish are the ones that gave him the ships and the money to get there. Without them he wouldn't of made it to the new world. But when you celebrate Columbus day you are also celebrating Italian and Spanish Heritage in the U.S. We are celebrating this because Columbus is and Italian Navigator and he sailed for the Spanish so we are celebrating both of the Heritage's and Columbus. We are celebrating both Spanish and Italian heritage as well as Columbus.

Finally I think we should Celebrate Columbus day is because he brought the Christianity to the natives. Many people believe that Columbus destroyed the natives religion. But if Columbus didn't bring Christianity to the natives then they would of kept doing human sacrifices. Columbus stopped that and had them convert to Christianity. Without Columbus they would still be doing human sacrifices.

I think we should continue to celebrate Columbus Day because we are celebrating Italian and Spanish Heritage, he helped the natives and because he brought Christianity to the natives. Columbus began Colonizing the America's and without him we might not even of been here. Columbus is Part of the reason America is how it is today.

Then Your There at The Singing Bridge

Your Wheels go onto the Bridge
Then Your Car
Suddenly
Its Like A Song
Hmmmmmmmmmmmm
Hummmmmmm
A Beautiful Song
It fills your mind
You look out At the Water
See The Boats Pass By
While You Listen to That
Beautiful Song
A Beautiful

My Stocks

Article posted May 13, 2010 at 04:18 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1332

My Stock Market Portfolio consists of three public companies that I thought would make me a profit. They are eBay, Walmart, and Walt Disney. I picked eBay because lots of people like eBay and I think eBay is really cool so I wanted to see if eBay was doing well and how they were doing over time. I also picked it to see if I should ever actually invest in eBay. I also Picked Walmart for one big reason. I don't like Walmart and I never have. So I wanted to see how they were doing and it was a last minute exchange for Pier 1 but now I wish I picked Pier 1. I picked Walt Disney just randomly. I really don't know why I picked it I just did. Those are the stocks that I picked from the stock market.

Now that I've sold my stocks I wish that I kept Pier 1 instead of Walmart. Pier 1 did a lot better than Walmart and they have been making money. Walmart hasn't and I lost $100 or more from Walmart. I also wish that I could change eBay into apple, because apple has been doing so well. Especially with the new iPad now I wish I did Apple. Their stocks went up about $200 since we started the stock market project. I wouldn't change Walt Disney because they have been doing so well. I've made a lot of money from them. Only to lose part of it because of Waltmart. Walt Disney basicly kept me in the Black instead of the red. Now I wish I switched stocks so that I could of made more of a profit. Even though its not really money.

I have some advice for people next year who are going to do the stocks. You definetly need to reseach a lot before you finally pick your stocks. Don't just pick stocks because your friends did. You should research how they have been doing before you pick them. Some good stocks are google, apple, and pennie stocks are always good. They tend to go up and when they do if you have enough you will make a lot of money off of them. So research a lot before you pick the stocks. Maybe go on google and see what will make you money.

Earth Day '10

Article posted May 4, 2010 at 07:05 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1257

A couple weeks ago was Earth Day where everyone was broadcasting about ways to cut down on trash and just help the earth. During school a couple of weeks before that we had a group of people come in. They helped us sort though all trash from that day and the day before that. A group of volunteers from each of our classes got in gloves and aprons, so they wouldn't get dirty. They dumped out all of the trash out of the bags and sorted through them. There were three groups of food. Trash that would go to the landfills, recyclable things, and Compostable things. We ahd about 87 pounds of trash before we sorted though it all. But when we were done sorting through things we had reduced it down to 25 pound of trash about 51 pounds of compostable trash and 9 pounds of recyclable stuff. It doesn't add up because some of it was liquids and little things we really couldn't pick up. It was very gross but showed us how we can reduce down the amount of trash that goes into landfills.

Another thing thing we did was the Earth Cast. A few of people from each of the classes were in little groups with different assignments for everyone. We had a greeter and a question answering person. They just typed on the computers. Then there were intro people and outro people who also answered questions and talked about things that we did. It was really fun and each class said something different. There were also other people in different schools or organizations that talked too. It went on for 24 hours. From 8pm the night before earth day to 8pm the night of Earth Day. it was very inspirational.

Crispin Scanner Project

Article posted April 19, 2010 at 05:56 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1557

This is my scanner project for L.A. I read the Book Crispin. The sword is there because he uses it to save his life. The Bear is there because one of the main characters name was Bear. The cross is Like the main part of the story. I can't say why. It will give it away. The coins are there because someone said he stole coins when he really didn't. The ball is there because it represents a juggling ball and bear juggles and the flag is there because its Englands flag and it takes place in England.

The scanning was actually very easy. We had how to do it on the side of the computer so It was very easy to use it. There really isn't any easier way to use it

My Stock Market Spread Sheet

Article posted April 16, 2010 at 02:26 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1269

This is my spreadsheet. I picked three stocks. Ebay, Walt Disney, and Walmart. We started our stocks on November 19 2009 and we're going to end on April 22, 2010. We started a spread sheet so we could see if we were gaining money or losing money. At first everything that I had I was losing money with but now, I'm gaining money. This was from Thursday April 1, 2010 so now I'm still gaining but Walmart is losing. This is to teach us how to use stock and what happens in everyday life. Those are my stocks.

This is my wordle. If you go on a website you can type something in and press create and it takes the most used words and makes this! This is from a lightning story that I had. Here is my story....

THE LIGHTNING HUNTERS

One day me and my sister were inside. We were very young. It was raining out so we couldn't go outside and we were both very bored. Soon it started to thunder and lightning. Me and my sister later went up to my room. We got on these cool little outfits and opened my window. It didn't have a screen in so you could reach you hand outside. We took a pin wheel. One that you put in the ground that spins when the wind comes, and stuck it out the window. Trying to get lightning to hit it. Yes I know, we weren't very smart. Lucky no lightning hit it. And that's the story of the LIGHTING HUNTERS.

Freestyle Skiing-Moguls

Article posted March 9, 2010 at 01:57 PM GMT • comment • Reads 420

Mogul freestyle skiing has been around since 1930. But it became an Olympic Medal discipline in 1992 in Albertville, France.
Mogul freestyle skiing is when an athlete is skiing down a course with a bunch of 1.2 meter high moguls spaced 3-4 meters apart. They choose 3-4 lines that they will ski down and they try to pick the fastest run. Near the beginning and the end of the course there are two air bumps in each course. The athletes do tricks over the bumps like spins, loops and flips. There are seven judges. Two air judges who evaluate how the jump was performed, how high they are off the jump, and the jump’s quality. There are also five turn judges who award points based on the quality of the skiers’ turns, and make deductions for technical mistakes.
They have terms like the fall line which is the most direct route from the top to the bottom of the mogul course. There's also the four-point takeoff which is when a skier plants both poles when they take off from a mogul.
Mogul freestyle skiing takes a lot of training. It requires core and muscular strength as well as endurance. They need strength to absorb the impact of the moguls to make it look smooth. Learning tricks takes a lot of patience and repetition. It takes compact skiers with fast twitch muscles.
There are many athletes doing freestyle skiing. There are 215 total athletes in the Olympics from the US, 205 total athletes from Canada, and 178 total athletes from Russia in the Olympics. But there are many more athletes from other countries. These are just the countries with the most athletes doing freestyle skiing. Mogul freestyle skiing has already finished in the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. For ladies moguls the U.S. got gold, Canada got silver, and the U.S. got bronze. Hannah Kearney won the gold for the U.S, Jennifer Heil won the Silver for Canada, and Shannon Bahrke won the bronze for the U.S.
Freestyle skiing began when skiers started doing acrobatics and now it's a world known sport. There have been some injuries to the skiers but they get right back up and they try again.

Celtic Soldier

Article posted February 19, 2010 at 01:56 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1107

Hello my name Servius. I was a Celtic Soldier. I served for the Celtics for three years. Normally you serve for twenty years but when I lost my leg they let me retire. I've been retired for four years now. I still have my uniform. I remember when we had a big war against the Romans. I think I'll tell you about it.

One day I was at my house when we were informed that the Romans were invading. We all got ready and quickly headed off. We met the Romans on a flat plain. Boy did they look tough. Their uniforms were so different from ours. They had a spear and a helmet. They also had a sword, a dagger, a shield, and body armor. They wore a cloak over the armor and had a kit bag. I was so nervous. They had three weapons. All I had was a sword and spear. One thing that I was happy about was that my spear had three spear points to it. The Romans only had one. But they had body armor. How would we be able to kill them if we couldn't get through the armor? I thought. One day I was sent to go spy on their fort. I hid in a tree and watched them. Their fort was so nice. They had two workshops, and six barracks. They also had a head quarters. Then there was this big wall and behind that were a bath house and the Commander's Quarters. They looked like they were so comfortable in their fort. I wished I was a Roman. I saw a butcher outside of one of the workshops so I figured that that was where they get their meat. Then I saw two huntsmen walk into that same workshop caring some sort of meat so I knew that was where they kept their meat. In the other one I found out that it was a blacksmith fort because I kept seeing soldiers walk in with swords and walk out swinging them around like they were brand new. I thought about my fort and boy was it different. We didn't have fancy bath houses or Commander's Quarters. All we had was some workshops and houses. The houses weren't much either. They had two floors. The bottom floor kept animals and we slept and ate on the second floor. I workshops did have blacksmiths but sadly we didn't have butchers to cut up the meat all fancy. Our Blacksmiths did have furnaces though and we had bellows to blow air no the fires. I wondered if they had bellows. Surely they would have furnaces. Suddenly I heard yelling and noticed that they saw me. I quickly ran away. This quickly led to more fighting against the Romans. The next day we managed to get into their fort we fought there for a while. They ran back and hid behind the wall where the Commander's Quarters were and the bath house. All we had to do was take over that area of their fort. Then it would be easier to fight them. But they got stronger and eventually we drew back and they got their fort back. But it wasn't over yet we still had a lot of fighting left to do, and they weren't giving up. About three years later the war was still going on. I was still fighting. One day when I was fighting someone cut my leg very badly. But he didn't kill me. He died before he could. So I just laid on the ground. I started dragging myself back to the fort, hoping that nobody would see me. When I eventually got myself back to the fort they didn't know what to do. They didn't have to medicine to help me. So we just decided to cut it off and stitch it closed. After that they said that I really couldn't fight anymore so they let me go home.

The war is still going on now. I don't know what has happened but hopefully we are in good condition. I would hate to lose this war against the Romans. They're so fierce they'd probably make us slaves and I'd be a bad slave since I only have one good leg. Well that’s my story about our war against the Romans.

I Have A DREAM

Article posted January 27, 2010 at 02:39 PM GMT • comment • Reads 95

I Have A Dream

The “I Have A Dream Speech” by Martin Luther King Jr. was about people's rights and freedom. I think that the message from the speech was that all men should be created equal like he said in his speech!”We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal.” He hoped that no matter what color someone's skin they will be judged by their character,”I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character!” MLK also hoped that one day all of gods children will be able to sing with new meaning!”This will be that day that all of god's children will be able to sing with new meaning,My country 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee I sing. Land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountain side, let freedom ring.” MLK's dream did come true. Many people don't judge people by the color of their skin but by their character. Everyone has rights.

How Stealing Began

How Stealing Began

One day Stealacus was very bored and he really wanted to do something. He wasn't the god of anything but somehow he was still a god. So he decided he would become a god of something. He wrote out his name and found S-T-E-A-L in it. He also found teal, Steala, and cus or cuz, as in because. He decided he would make up stealing. He thought long and hard and finally after days of nothing but thinking he thought of what it meant. He decided that it would mean taking things without asking but then bringing it back.
So he then decided to pick 5 very popular people who new a lot of people. He hoped that these people would tell all their friends about it. It took him a while but he finally found the perfect 5 people. Gathering them all together he told them about stealing. It took days of telling and finally the people realized what he meant. On the final day he had a quiz to make sure that they really knew what he meant and they didn't get confused.
“Today you will be taking a quiz to make sure you actually know what I mean.” Stealacus announced to the group. “Question 1.) What is the meaning of stealing? Question 2.) How do you steal things? And Question 3.) What do you have to do when you get back to Earth? Do you understand the questions?”
“Yes sir”, they all answered simultaneously. Stealacus passed out the paper and they all began. About 20-30 minuted later they were all done.
“Good now thank you all for joining me and soon I will be the god of something and that something is STEALING!!! Muhahahahahaha.”
The people were sent back to Earth and they started spreading it to a few other people. Soon 100 people knew about stealing. Slowly the whole world kew about stealing but somewhere on the way to it getting around the world it got mixed up and it was just taking something without asking. People were stealing all over the place. Some people choose not to steal and that was good but other people were. Then it just slowly started to stop and nobody was stealing anymore. Stealacus wasn't happy about this at all. So he grabbed the first 5 people and talked with them.
“Why doesn't anybody steal anymore.?” Stealacus demanded.
“Because sir,” A man named Manny mentioned, “Stealing isn't fun anymore. There's no joy in stealing just for the fun of it.” This puzzled Stealacus. He thought this would be a really fun thing to do. So he decided to change this. He walked outside and threw his hand into the air a blue light shot out from it and down came a one dollar bill. It Was shining.
“This isn't just a normal ordinary dollar bill,” Stealacus said, “This dollar bill has a charm on it. Who ever finds it will get everything they ever want.” And with that he threw it into the air. Down it fell into earth.
“Now begone!” Stealacus demanded. The people got back to earth and right away they told their friends. Soon those same 100 people were stealing trying to get that one special dollar bill. But people were also being put in jail for stealing because they weren't doing it secretly. The word had gotten out about them being put in jail. Some people stopped stealing others really didn't care.
Now stealing had really become a national word and a national hobby. One day three stealers were walking down the street. When they noticed an old lady walking out of the bank. They all thought the same thing.
“OoO. She will be easy to steal from.” But then they all realized something. Only one of them could get her purse. They all looked at each other and the sprinted across the road.
“Hello young men what can I do for you?” She said. But then they all grabbed at her purse. She yanked it away before they could get a good grip. Then the sky turned dark, and the old lady rose into the air. A voice boomed through the air.
“How dare you try to steal from me!” Boomed the voice of Zeus.
“W-w-w-we thought you were an o-o-o-old lady with her p-p-p-purse.” Manny said. He was shaking.
“Purse? Purse? You think this is a purse? This is actually a European hand bag. It was hand woven. I got it as a gift. You shall be punished for trying to steal from someone. Even though that someone is me.” The three men were shaking. Huddled together.
“Who taught you how to steal?” He demanded.
Manny stepped forward because he was the bravest. “Stealacus taught us. We were told that Stealing is when you take something from other people. Apparently there is a one dollar bill somewhere that can get us anything we want.”
“I shall have a talk with Stealacus. But for now you shall be put in jail.” Zeus said. Then the police came and took them to jail. Zeus went to have a talk with Stealacus.

“Stealacus I need to have a word with you.” Zeus said.
“Yes sir. What is is sir?” Stealacus questioned. He new something was wrong.
“You taught humans how to steal?” Zeus was furious.
“Yes sir but they were suppose to return the stuff after they took it. Except for the one dollar bill.” Stealacus was frightened now.
“Well they don't return the stuff they just take it for themselves. I demand that you tell them to stop stealing before it gets out of hand.” So Stealacus went looking for the same 5 men. But apparently 3 had died in a car crash. The same car crash. Another one just died. And the last one got shot.
So stealing never got stopped because Stealacus didn't know who stole or didn't.

That's why people now steal things.

I recently did a project on firetrucks and how they changed over time. They started with horses pulling the trucks and went all the way to how they are today. It was a big change because horses can't go that fast and they can't run that long. It was a big change and it really helped our town.

Fog

An early morning visitor,
Or a Dusk trespasser,
Creeping among the trees,
An eerie presence around,
Impossible to hear,
As it darts up to your house,
Crawling around you,
Waiting to pounce,
On a poor little person,
Who dares to enter,

Your like a blind person,
When you enter into its unrolling gloom,
The foggy veil of its entrance pulls you in,
Your restrained from seeing anything,
Deeper and Deeper you go,
Dense and Denser it gets,
You feel alone,
Locked in,
you start running
then
its gone
and your
Lost

My Artist Statement

In my artwork I used horses in my collage because I wanted it to be based on things I like. I wanted my audience to see that I like to ride horses and that they are magnificent animals. I used magazines to cut out the pictures, then I used modge podge® to glue them on. Finally, I used paint to paint on the first initial of my name. I also like green and orange together and that’s what I painted the M. I think that my artwork turned out very successful because it turned out how I wanted it to. That’s what inspired my artwork.

My Persuasive Letter

Article posted January 8, 2010 at 07:23 PM GMT • comment (3) • Reads 206

I think Rye Junior High School needs to start later. It starts at 8:10 and that is still very early because some kids have to wake up at six. Most schools start too early and they shouldn't. Some schools start at 9 and end at 3. If the times changed the students wouldn't have to wake up as early. Also some times kids can't fall asleep at night so if they fell asleep at 2:00 in the morning they won't get much sleep.
If schools started later kids would be able to focus better. They would be wide awake so then they could focus and pay attention better instead of dozing off. They also won't get sleep deprived and that will really help kids work. Their grades will probably improve.
They will also be in a better mood. They will have more energy to listen and work and then they might start sharing their homework or schoolwork. They also won't talk back and disagree because they will have better moods and will actually listen and think about the problem instead of automatically disagreeing and talking back. They also will have a less chance of starting fights. Most of us have activities after school, so when they get home they have to shower, do homework and also have dinner so they will probably be up rather late. So that would mean they would need to sleep later.
With more sleep they will have less chance of getting mental or physical problems. Lack of sleep can cause depression. When kids don't get enough sleep they can get muscle aches. Lack of sleep can also cause kids to be more likely to use alcohol or drugs.
Scientist, found out that typical youth can't fall asleep until after 11 p.m. and their brains remain asleep until 8a.m. and it will take awhile for their brains to actually focus and be able to work well. Teachers will also be able to sleep later. Another reason school should start later is that when the buses go by they might wake up people that are still sleeping and that wouldn't be very nice, now would it?
So, I think school should start later because we will focus better, we will have better moods, and we have a less chance of getting mental or physical problems. Don't you agree with me?

Project Safeguard

Project Safeguard was a day when the 7th grade went to the church. We had certain classes and we learned about how to get along with each other and be happy about ourselves. We had 4 classes and each of them were different. A few people came to teach each of the classes. They taught us how to have a good attitude. They were very inspirational.
During project safeguard I learned that whatever you want to become making a dream board will help you accomplish whatever you set your mind to. A dream board is a board with a bunch of pictures of your goal on it. I also leasrned that if you are angry at someone you can arm wrestle that person to calm yourselve down instead of hitting them or yelling.
Thats what I learned at project safeguard.

The Thanksgiving field trip was very interesting. Somethings that I didn't know about Thanksgiving was that they made matzoh balls from a piece of bread that looked like cardboard. And it was very flat and it had a vertical line of dots to keep it from rising. I also learned that it was very hard to preserve food there were three ways of preserving it. They Put fruits on strings they put things like carrots and cucumbers in jars with vinegar and salt. And the last thing they did was salting things. I also learned that they used a clock jack to cook the turkey or chicken. The field trip to Strawbery Banke was very interesting.

Dear Mom,
In Math we have been learning about a lot of things but I'm going to tell you about three of them. They are probability, Order of Operations and number tricks.
The number tricks are so fun and I actually made my own. In the problems you pick a number and go down the line and it tells you to either add subtract multiply or divide by a certain number. Sometimes it comes out to be your same number that you picked before or maybe they pick a certain number to finish on.
We also did Order of operations. An Easier way to say it is PEMDAS which stands for Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division,Addition, and Subtraction. That means that you do Parentheses first then Exponents then Multiplication or Division. Next you do either Addition or Subtraction. Its like that because you go from left to right and pemdas should really be spelled like this
P because you go from left to right with m,d and the left to right
E with a,s.

AS
We also did probability. One thing that I want to talk about is the computer simulated games for probability. On the computer if you went on a certain website it would calculate it for you. You could use coins, spinners, dice, and cards. I was very fun and useful.
Those were some of the things that we learned in module 1 of math.

Love,
NJMA

The Ocean House Hotel

I Stand Here Staring
At The Grave Of The Ocean House
And The Grave Of The People
That Died In The Fire
The Fire Of 1862,The Fire of 1862
It Rings in My Head
Like The The Blast of A Bomb
The Fire Of 1862 The Fire Of 1862
Rebuilt Again, As The After life of This Hotel
But the After Life Has an End
Burning Down in 1872
The Fire Of 1872, The Fire Of 1872
The Fire Of 1862, The Fire Of 1872

The Planets

The planets are all different colors and sizes. Like the Sun compared to Pluto. Well the Sun is 625 times larger than Pluto. But when you compare the Sun with Jupiter the sun is only 9.68 times larger than Jupiter. When you compare Jupiter with Pluto, Jupiter is 62.5 time larger than Pluto. The only planet that is almost exactly the same size of earth is Venus. The Earth is 12756km and Venus is 12104km. Two other planets that are almost the same size are Uranus and Neptune. They are both blue and Uranus is 51152km and Neptune is 49620km. Thats not a big difference. All the Planets are different sizes but some of them are pretty close to each other.
