The United States celebrates Columbus Day because Columbus discovered America. But, he thought he discovered Asia. He really wasn’t the first person to discover America. People shouldn’t celebrate Columbus Day because he wasn’t really nice to the native Americans.Columbus turned the natives into slaves. He brought some of them back to Europe so they would be slaves.Because he traveled by ship, he brought diseases back on his ships. Christopher Columbus was mean.
If we celebrate Columbus, we should celebrate all of the explorers.Magellan sailed around the world.Because of all the explorers, we have spices and different things that we trade. The explorers found new trade routes.
I think that Columbus shouldn’t be the only explorer we celebrate.People get the day off from work because of him, but other explorers did things we should celebrate.

There was an old man named Mr. Woodwell. Skiff's mom had died. Tyler Croft was a mean person. Skiff lived with his dad. His dad was drunk all the time. Skiff was 12 years old.
Tyler Croft was always making fun of Skiff. He always called Skiff a cry baby. Skiff thought he was really mean.
One morning, he went down to the docks and he saw that the Mary Rose was sinking! He asked his dad for help, but his dad said no. His dad just wanted to keep drinking. So, Skiff went to Mr. Woodwell's house to ask for help. Mr. Woodwell was a very nice man. He told Skiff to tie a rope to two kegs and some pieces of wood to make the boat float back up.
Once Skiff got the Mary Rose up on the surface, he found out that the motor didn't start. Mr. Woodwell helped him fix the leaks on the bottom of the boat. Now the boat floated, but he needed a new starter. He didn't have enough money to fix the motor.
To earn money to fix Mary Rose's engine, Skiff decided to set lobster traps. He didn't earn enough money with the lobsters though, because Tyler Croft was cutting his traps.
Skiff felt very sad and very mad. Tyler was so mean. Skiff got an idea. He was going to go out into the ocean and catch a fish. He was going to catch a huge blue fin tuna to sell to Mr. Nagahachi.
It was very hard to catch the blue fin tuna. Skiff fell in the water. He thought he was going to die, but he didn't die after all. He caught the biggest blue fin tuna in Maine that season. His name was in the paper. His dad stopped drinking.
This book was good. My favorite part was Skiff caught Tyler Croft cutting his traps. I felt sad because Skiff Beaman caught him and he couldn't get Tyler in trouble because nobody would believe it was Tyler. The happiest part in the book was that Skiff's dad stopped drinking. I would recommend this book because it's a good book. You can read it or listen to it on tape.

We went to the cafeteria. We looked at our trash. We collected the trash from lunch for two days. There was a lot of trash. There was about 85 lbs of trash total. We opened up the bags and dumped them on the floor. Then we looked for things that we could recycle or compost. Then we weighed the trash that would go to a landfill. In the end there were only 25 lbs of trash that would go right to the landfill. That really surprised me.
We did all of that so we could make sure we found everything we could recycle. I liked the activity. Some things that could be recycled are: plastic bottles, plastic containers for yogurt, soda cans, and aluminum foil. Some things that could be composted are: milk cartons, eggs, leftover chicken, and leftover pizza. I learned about how our trash goes to a landfill. They haul all of the trash away in big trucks. I was really surprised at how much we were wasting.
One day we each brought a disposable item to class. I brought in a chocolate chip ice cream container. People throw away the containers after they eat the ice cream. We looked at everything that we throw away at home. We had to look at what we need to throw away and what we can recycle or compost. We recycle at my house, but we don't compost. We have compost bins at school, though.

I am a Roman soldier. My name is Agustus. I am twenty years old because that is how old a soldier has to be.There are no women in the Roman army, just men.I carry a weapon that looks like a stick, it is called a sword, it is very sharp on the end.
When I fought in battle I wore a helmet to protect my head.To protect my body I carried a shield.
Because the Roman army was very organized, I ate with them and we sometimes slept in tents.I get a lot of exercise by running, marching and practice-fighting.I obey my rulers so I don’t get in trouble.

First, we picked out pictures from magazines and cut them out. Then, we glued them to the canvas with mod podge. I put a map of the United States on it. After that, we treated the canvas with gesso, and painted with acryllic paint.

Most kids at RJH have recess and then time to eat. I don’t have recess because I need more time to eat. I really like to take my time to enjoy my food.
I think that lunches should be 10 minutes longer. Most kids have 7-15 minutes of recess, and then 15-23 minutes to eat. If I had more time I could eat more food. If other kids had more time, they could eat more food, too. Or they could eat their favorite food.
Some food takes longer for me to eat, like pizza, chicken nuggets, pasta, and brownie sundaes. I like those foods but it takes more than 30 minutes for me to eat them.
If lunches were longer, I would be able to talk more with my friends. I don’t get time to go outside and play at recess. If we had more time together in the cafeteria we could talk about stuff. I could finish my food and have time to talk.

Joe Flood came into our school and talked to us about smoking and alcohol. He told us that alcohol is not good for us. You can die from it because it gets into your brain and damages it. Smoking is bad because it does not give you a healthy lifestyle. Smoking makes you sick in your lungs and you can even get lung cancer.
Joe Flood wants to let the kids at Rye, New Hampshire know that smoking and alcohol use is not good for you. He knows this because he has done it before. I learned to never smoke and drink. You can drink a little bit but you can’t drink too much because you can damage your body. I am glad that Joe Flood came into our school because I learned a lesson. And I want to talk to my uncle about smoking. I really wish he would stop smoking because it is not good for him and I love him!
Thank you for reading.

Today we went to Strawberry Banke. We saw Mrs. Shapiro. We went into that house. And we had a tour guide named Ann. Ann took us around. We saw the hearth. And they scraped cinnamon. And I stringed green beans. And I grabbed a couple of apples. Her husband was the governor. And the governer decided something about Thanksgiving. He said we should have Thanksgiving that day of the year. Flip is a drink with beer. And they like cinnamon. And they use sugar. And I grated cinnamon. And they moved the spoon around. I'm telling you, I'm just trying to think of something. This hasn't been a good blog so far. I'm saying that.

I made a poster about policital science. Political Science is the study of government and how it works. There are different types of government like monarcy and democracy. Some levels of goverment are local, state, and national.

My dad is an angler. He's a lobsterman. I did my project on lobstering and Rye Harbor. I made a lobster book. I saw lots of pictures of lobstermen on the internet. A long time ago they used paddles on boats, but now they use motors. They had to pull all the boats up on the beach, but now there are moorings and docks in Rye Harbor.

There is no air on the moon. Astronauts go to the moon. They have to wear suits because they can't breathe. They use an oxygen machine in the suits.
The moon looks white and grey. There are different kind of rocks on the moon. There aren't any oceans on the moon, but there are places called seas. I got to see moon rocks. They were grey. The astronauts brought them back. Someone from NASA delivered the rocks to my teacher. They were in a grey box.
I like moon rocks. They're the best thing in the world!

Dear Mom and Dad,
In math we learned about graphs. I made a bar graph on my computer. I counted how many colors of cubes I had. I had red, yellow, orange, blue and black cubes. I opened up Excel on my computer and clicked on graph, and when I put my numbers and colors in, it made a graph. I am learning subtraction, too. Subtraction is kind of hard. I am practicing with blocks, money and counting pictures of things on worksheets. I am having a hard time remembering how to figure out what the answer is in subtraction.
I am also practicing with money. I know how much pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters are worth. I know that there are five pennies in a nickel, ten in a dime, and twenty-five in a quarter. I am using the coins to practice addition and subtraction. It’s a little hard sometimes, but I’m doing my best!
Ms. S has been helping me practice my shapes. I know triangles, squares, rectangles, hexagons, and even more! We play a game and I have to tell her the name of all the shapes. I try to get the answer right. I make some mistakes, but I work through it.
The most important thing I have learned in math class is that it’s OK to make mistakes. I know I can fix them. When you make mistakes and fix them it’s called problem solving. I know that everyone makes mistakes, and that’s part of life. It’s all a part of learning.
Love,
JSHA

My name is Charlie
I stayed in a boarding house
It was called “The Elms”
I didn’t have a home, because I could not find one
I was homeless
My Parents were very sick
So I had to get a job
I worked in a sandwich shop
For eight dollars a day
To pay for my room and board
I had to walk everywhere
I was only nine years old
I liked to have fun, too
In the boarding house I liked to play
I liked to play chess with my aunt

The first four planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are close together. The other planets are very far apart. The other planets are Pluto, Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, and Jupiter. Some planets are bigger.
