Should we Celebrate Columbus?

Should the U.S celebrate Columbus day?

Lauren Dodds

SS Blue 6/7/10

Every year we Americans, Europeans, and Spanish celebrate Columbus day, but why do we celebrate that day? Columbus day is in celebration of an European explorer who sailed to what he thought was Asia but reached what is Cuba where he and his crew found the Native Americans. which they brought back to Europe on there month long voyage. Christopher Columbus was not the first to discover the Americas but he was the only navigator from another continent to find more land, so why are we celebrating what he didn't do. We celebrate this Holiday because of the different opinions between the Americans and Europeans fighting to have this holiday.

By Columbus “discovering” the Americas it led to conquest with the Europeans, which destroyed the Americas culture. What he did bring though was western culture, he also brought Christianity, and new technology for the Native Americans. Though the Native Americans already had advanced cultures and were being dishonored by this explorer. He also found different food supplies that he brought back to Europe Christopher Columbus did help the Native Americans but also destroyed they culture and way of living. He was a famous explorer to the Europeans and Spanish because it helped them with more discoveries of this new world, with more food supplies and other techniques from the Native Americas. The Columbian exchange also led to more cargo and other supplies for the Europeans.

The reasons of Columbus exploring led to more exploration by other navigators. Columbus came to help but mostly hurt the way of life for the Native Americans by making them change the government and way of life. Columbus was one of the many explorers who shaped how we live today, but I think we shouldn't celebrate this holiday. Though most kids in America today see this as another day off of school it also is about describing the beginnings of how our great nation was discovered, and how it came to be today.

stock market

Stock Market

For my math class I have been buying stocks and checking them every week to see how they are doing. At the beginning I had no idea what stock I wanted but I chose mine by finding one stock that was high price, one a very low price, and another in the middle to see how they would change. I bought Macy's at sixteen point thirty, Walmart at fifty four point fifty seven, and Pepsi at sixty three point sixty five. By the end of having three stocks for twenty four weeks Macy's was at twenty four point sixty eight, Walmart at fifty five point seventy, and Pepsi at sixty six point twenty.

After you have a stock for a while you can see when its going to rise and decline. Some changes I've seen with my stocks have been if you but a high price stock at a low price then its most likely that your stock's price will go up. Some of the changes I would have made with my stocks was I would have bought more shares of Macy, because it was a higher price stock then Pepsi and walmart. If I made the changes before, I think will probably help me make a larger profit at the end.

Some of the advice I would give some one who was going to buy a stock was to research it before buying it. Like if its a place or one of your favorite companies, I would see if its actually high in quality. Then you can always buy a more high price stock after researching, and learning more about the stock. At the end of selling stocks its also nice to record what you have gained or loss in all.

Garden

For our class, we have started to work on the garden by planting seeds to grow for our lunch. We are also selling our own seeds that we made, and testing people's soil to tell them what they can grow in it. In sixth grade, we also got to measure out the garden boxes and see how much plants we can grow in each one. We also got to vote on which fruits and vegetables we want to grow, and actually got to plant them ourselves. Now we also can sell some of our foods to other people in the town.

Earth Day

Article posted May 4, 2010 at 02:44 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1198

For our earth day we have been finding a lot of ways to celebrate, by creating podcasts, posters, and talking to different schools in the USA. A couple weeks ago my class had a chance to talk to a person in California to talk about the projects we have been doing here. One of the projects we have been working on is recycling, composting, and reducing our waste in our school. Also for the actual earth day we were webcasting, and chatting to people from other schools to help them make a choice on how to reduce the waste from each school.

We also had some volunteers come to our school to tell us what can and can't be composted in our lunch.

Luge

Olympic Essay

The luge has been known for the speed and strength and trying to get the fastest time. It has grown very popular over the years but takes a lot of training to become an Olympic athlete. They have to know the background information about the sport. Such as the sport luge was first brought and introduced by the vikings around four hundred BC. Also even if the athletes train a lot then don't win a medal they keep trying and focusing on the sport to get better.

Some of the training and work athletes have to learn is the terms of the sport. Some of the terms are the G-force or the gravitational for, the ice friction that keeps the speed and racer on the track while going over turns. The Kufens are the fiberglass runners attached to steel blades allowing to steer. The labyrinth is the stretch of sliding track made up of a series of turns. The last term if the Lip which is the protection barrier of the ice track. The athletes also have to know the safety of the sport, like what to do in a safety emergency.
Some other training they have to do is the physical training which usually takes around six days a week and four hours a day. The training consists of aerobic exercises such as swimming, speed skating, and gymnastics, which helps them train for there sport. It takes a lot of time and effort to compeat nationally. The results for the luge was that the us team got a bronze medal. Though some don't win, they keep pursuing their dream of becoming Olympic athletes.

Romans in Scotland

Article posted February 18, 2010 at 03:21 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1250

In the day of the Romans and Celts there are similarities and differences between them both with changes throughout the centuries. There have also been new tools and terms to learn about the history.
Some of the differences between the romans and celts were the amour and clothing, for the romans it was the cloak, and kit bag also known as Saccus and Caligae. Also for the Celts it was the torc, clothing and faces. The tools of the romans made them known to be more advanced with the more protected and armored soldiers. While for the Celts they were a less protected army with very different stiles, like their painted faces to with bright colored cloths. They also have different stiles of how they protect politically and army wise that was low armed. Another thing that had similar and different aspects was how they set up their villages. With different organization and their different buildings, tools, and advanced skills used to help their village. The Romans had more of an organized village with square boundaries with protected towers and ditches at the gates. They also had toilets, and tools that helped in their growth. The Celts had more of a circle boundaries with not as much protection and what made them special were their cemeteries where old soldiers were buried. The differences and similarities with their tools, terms and technique   made the Romans and Celts known for certain things that have changed and helped our day today for the better and worse.

Happy Valentine's Day

When you come back my heart creates another star

that keeps on growing.

It feels like you make the air

push me in every direction.

You make my eyes twinkle unlike stars and planets.

You make my heart feel like a vacuum

when you crumble it up.
