Columbus Day: Should We Celebrate It or Not?

Columbus Day is usually recognized as just a day off from school and work, but it has a lot more meaning to it. Columbus Day is about when Christopher Columbus was searching for a new route to Asia but ended finding the new world. It's when he had settled on the land and had founded new treasures. It's about him finding the new people on the new world. But if you did your research, most of this isn't true at all. To me, Columbus Day shouldn't be celebrated for many different reasons.
For the first fault in his theory, most of what he thought wasn't true. For example, what he thought was Asia, was actually the new world, which is now the Americas. Another fault was that he said he had walked on the new world and explored, which isn't true because the shore line was too rocky to get too with his ships and most of the crew didn't know to swim so they couldn't possibly get to the new world. The last fault that he said was that there was plenty of gold on the new world, which wasn't true because it was either false gold or there wasn't really anything on the new world.
To me, Columbus day is just another false holiday that we celebrate just for a day off, which isn't really necessary. Also, to me, Columbus day will always be just to relax from the days from school or work, like a sick day. If I had a decision to decide whether we celebrate Columbus day or not, I would vote not.

I chose three companies that I thought were going to be very good companies that I could invest in and that would make a lot of really good money. The reason I picked Sirius Radio is because lots of people listen to Sirius Radio and it was the cheapest stock I could find too. I also picked American Express Company because a lot of people have their credit card. The last stock I invested in was Yahoo! Inc. because a lot of people use it for a search engineer and a lot of people use it for an E-mail address.
Their were also lots of changes that I would have made to my profile that I invested in. I would have bought more Sirius Radio because it had made me the most money than any of my other stocks. I also would have bought less Yahoo! Inc. because it had lost me the most money at of all my stocks. Also, instead of buying American Express Company, I would have bought Pier 1 because it had made a lot of money over the Christmas time.
There are a lot of things you would have to know if you were going to invest in the stock market today. First, someone would have to explain the market and how it works like Wall street, Main street, and the Bear and Bull markets. After that, you would have to know about the profits and losses. Profit is when you make money and loss is when you loose money. Simple right?

Our school had made a garden about a year ago to help out the environment. We use the garden to plant most of our fruits and vegetables. We don't really buy any produce from the store because when they package the fruit, they use a bunch of plastic when it's not necessary to. But is we do have to buy produce from the store, we buy it fresh because it uses less plastic.
We usually grow perennial plants in our garden so we can change up the fruits and vegetables every year. But we usually grow potatoes, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, etc. We also have some garden days over some of the weekends if anyone wants to work on the garden.

My name is Lillie Galea and I was a roman solider. I fought in the war against the Celts. These people were very different then us in many ways. They mostly had different clothing then us and equipment then us. Now these Celts were very strong for a city, but I never thought that they could be so willing to fight us for their land. While we were fighting these wars, I began to notice all the different things about the Celts. The thing that really stood out from all their clothing was their torc. It was made out of copper or bronze, just like jewelry. Another thing was both of our faces. While our general kept all of us keep our faces clean, these Celts had a full grown beard and moustaches. But luckily for us Romans, they did happen to shave once in a while. I did notice that their helmet was different too. While ours was strong metal with lined fur underneath, the Celts were made of simple leather and metal. But these Celts also had elaborate carvings in their helmets. The designs ranged from birds to beasts. The last thing about their clothing was their shoes. While theirs was made of just plain leather open-toed shoes, ours was made from cow-hide, open-toed, with studded nails all around the the shoe to keep it together. Unlucky for us though the nails would always fall out usually every day. Now during this war, these Celts had different weaponry then us too. Us Romans had a two-foot sword hanging from our waist for easy access. We also had a spear with a ten inch point. These were special because when we hit the Celts shields, our spears stuck in and bent. Now you might think why we had did that. When the spear bent like that, it got stuck in the Celts shield and it was then unusable for them to throw it back. Now these Celts had weapons too. It was a long sword with a slashing and cutting blade. They also had a spear with a spiral at the top so that it could made a deep and deadly wound in us Romans. Now fighting in this war was indeed very punishable for us Romans and the Celts with all the sicknesses and the allies that we sent to make peace, but it seemed to me that these Celts were like us in many ways. They had our strength, similar clothing and weaponry, and courage. Sadly though, we really didn't get along with most of them. But luckily I survived this war and now you too can see what life was like for me and all the others in this war.

Artist Statement
My collage is called “Fall with a Twist”. My artwork is mostly about lines and pattern because most of my pictures are filled with lines and patterns of all sorts. The materials that I used for my collage were,
Mod Podge
Pictures from magazines
A stencil
Paint
The mod podge was to glue on the pictures to the banister, the stencil was to draw the pattern over the banister, and the paint was for so you can see the stencil that I drew out.
I'm very proud of my collage because I thought I did a very good job with the colors I picked for my collage.

Smoking With Children In A Car

Over the years, people have been smoking in their cars with their children next to them. Some people don't even open their windows while their kids are in the car. When this happens, there are lots of bad decisions or sicknesses that children can do or get. For example, children can get lung diseases, and lung cancer from smoking and they could get ideas from their parents to smoke and do a lot of bad things in life.
I think smoking with a child in a car should be illegal because first of all, it's really bad for your kids with all the smoke in the car causing them to breath in second-hand smoke. It also influences kids to smoke like their parents do because they think it's OK which is not acceptable for children, especially younger children.
Second of all, it's really bad for you too because it's very unattractive with your breath because it smells really bad. Also, when you're done with it, you just toss it on the ground like you don't even care about littering which is bad for the Earth too.
Third of all, it's really bad for your health because it can cause lots of sicknesses and diseases like lung cancer. It also can make you age inside of your body which makes you die earlier. Also, it's really bad for your wallet too because it's really expensive to smoke and if you didn't smoke, you could take the money that you save and take your family places like out to eat, clothes shopping, etc.
But with all the reasons that I gave you to not smoke, some people don't really care because it is so addicting and it's really hard to quit. Some people even think that smoking is harmless and it doesn't kill you. But others who want others to quit say, “when will we stop” and, “How will we stop people from smoking ”. There's really nothing WE can do to stop it, it's all up to the people who smoke to stop this addiction. But if it does because illegal and people are still smoking with their children in their car, then we're going to have to think of another way to stop this horrible tragedy from getting even worse.

Joe Flood is a man who is from a organization that is meant for going to schools around the world teaching kids not to do drugs and alcohol. He came to our school and talked about all the things we shouldn't do like drugs and alcohol. He came about 2 weeks ago and had 4 lessons with us talking about his life with alcohol and drugs. He said his life before was a great life until he was a freshman in high school. He had hung out with boys a grade higher then him. Then one day he saw his friends smoking and doing all these drugs. They kept insisting his to try them so he finally said yes. After that day, he was known as the class drunk. All he did after school was drink and do drugs. He was now in his 30's, he had gotten married and had children but was still doing drugs and alcohol. He ended up getting a divorce and he was still doing drugs and alcohol. He didn't even care because he was more interested in his alcohol and drugs. Until one day one of his friends introduced him to an AA meeting, (Alcoholics Anonymous) to help him stop drinking and doing drugs. He has been sober and clean for over 15 years.
I loved Joe Flood because he's not like other people like your mom and dad saying don't drink and don't do drugs, because he has actually experienced what happens when you drink and do drugs. He really inspired me to make more better choices in life because of his lessons. I would love for him to come back and do more lessons with us.

This is my project. I did the topic baking because I thought it was important to know because baking is a big part of our lives. It is a big part of our lives because we bake all the time and without baking, we would be eating a lot of raw food and we wouldn't be having a lot of baked goods that we have today.

Dear mom,
we have been learning all about module 1 in our math textbooks. So in these next 3 paragraphs, I will be explaining all about frequency tables, sequences, and number tricks.
So the first thing we learned is a frequency table. A frequency table is a table that has to do with how frequent (many times) a thing happens or has. For example, if I was taking a survey on how many have pets, I might do how many people have dogs, cats, fish, no pets, and other. While I was surveying, I would have done tallies to keep me on track. After I was done, I would have tallied up the tallies and in another column, I would put the total amount of tallies in that column. So to make a frequency table, you collect the data, tally it, and put the total amount in the table, and that's how you make a frequency table.
The next thing we learned is how to do sequences. A sequence is a pattern that keeps going like 2,4,6,8,10,12,14,16,18,20, etc. To make a sequence, all you have to do is simply make a pattern and to keep it going. For example, if I made a short pattern, (10,20,30) I could keep it going to make a sequence. (10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100 etc.) So to make sequence, all you need to do is make a pattern and keep it going. And if you want to, you could make the sequence into shapes if you wanted to.
The last thing we learned of was number tricks. Number tricks are tricks that you can do with any number or numbers and come out with the same number every time you do the trick with different numbers. For example, I'll give you a number trick and you can figure it out for yourself. (Think of a number, add 7, multiply by 5, subtract 5, divide by 5, subtract your original number, add 4, subtract 3, and your answer should be 7. So number tricks are nothing but little tricks so that you'll come out with the same thing every single time.
So over-all, we learned all about frequency tables, sequences, and number tricks in module 1. All of the students are very good at these math lessons and we are moving on to module 2 and we hope that our progress will improve.

Path for A Trolley
The shovel in my hands hurts my palms. My fingers are purple and my face is numb. My feet are killing me and my voice is crackling. I feel like I'm dying inside. I'm digging and digging this path with my father and brothers but I don't feel better about doing this like my father said I would. I don't want to be here. I wish I was home with my mom and sister. The shovel is too big for me and I can't see a thing in this hat. I'm hungry and thirsty. Its only been minutes but it feels like hours to me. But I realized that we have been done for a while now. So I dropped my stuff and ran home but ended up in the snow pile. It wasn't the best day I've ever had, but I'm glad I'm home.

Planets-
No planet is alike each other. They all have there uniqueness. Like Saturn has its rings and Jupiter has its big storm on it called the red dot. Some of the planets are different colors too. Like Uranus and Neptune are blue. Planets can be red, blue, and white. Also when you look up into the sky, you sometimes see a star in the sky and the next night its not there. That's because its a wondering star better known as a planet. The most common one is Venus.
Distances-
The planets are close and far away from the Sun. The closest one it Mercury. The furthest one is Neptune. Now your probably wondering why it's not Pluto,well to tell you the truth, Pluto is not a planet anymore. I know, it's sad. Now let me give you a list so you know how close and far away the planets are.
Mercury- .4AU
Venus- .7AU
Earth- 1AU
Mars- 1.5AU
Jupiter- 5.2AU
Saturn- 9.5AU
Uranus- 10.2AU
Neptune- 30.1AU
Pluto- 39.5AU (Not a Planet)
Sizes-
The planets are all different sizes. For instance, Jupiter is thhe largest planet, and Mercury is the smallest. Now your probably wondering, why isn't Pluto the smallest planet. Well to tell you the truth, Pluto is not a planet anymore. Scientists say it drifted to far out of our solar system. So now we just call Pluto a dwarf planet.
Measurements-
We used lot of mesurements when we were working with the planets. But the most we used were lightyears and AUs. We used lightyears for measuring the distance of the stars and how long it takes for the light of the stars to get to us, and we used AUs to tell the distance of the planets. An AU is how far a planet is form the sun. Here are all the planets and their AU's.
