Columbus Day Opinion

Article posted June 16, 2010 at 06:01 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1958

Columbus Day is a day loved by many, to others not so much. Some people don't want to celebrate it at all. They want it removed as a holiday. They shouldn't because this holiday has been celebrated for years, by people all over the world. This day is celebrated because of Christopher Columbus sailing across the world and finding the New Land then he brought us over to the New World. I will tell you why I support this holiday in the following.

Columbus Day was a day celebrated by people all over the world because his journey to Asia, but he didn't exactly make it there. In fact the reason we celebrate it is because he brought his people from Europe to the New Lands, better known as America. Yes he did not discover America, but he did bring the Europeans to this new land, which he should still be honored for this.
There is a debate about who likes this holiday, what I mean about this is that a lot of Italians like this holiday better because Christopher Columbus was from Italy. A lot of Italians and Americans like this holiday, and that is not a bad thing, everyone has a holiday that other people celebrate, how different is this from that?

This holiday is a tradition that has been celebrated for many years for the reason that I have been saying, that this tradition has been celebrated for years and if you want to remove it just like that, that is pointless, sure he wasn't the first one to discover America but he was the one to bring the people over from Europe, and if he didn't we wouldn't be who we are today. What I mean about that is that we wouldn't have the same physical features that we do today.

Some disagree, some agree, but to take away a holiday that has been celebrated for a number of years is just wrong, and should not happen. That is why Columbus Day should still be celebrated and not removed as a holiday.

Earth Day

Article posted May 4, 2010 at 02:13 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1267

Our grade did an earth day web cast. The full time it ran was twenty four hours, but our grade only talked for I think about an hour or two. What we talked about was well earth day of course, and also how the Earth is a great place to live and how we should treat it with some respect, and how it is getting trashed by pretty much everyone on this planet. How this worked was we all had a meeting with our science teacher and she gave us our jobs for the web cast. Then on the day of the web cast we had our classes, then whoever was participating in the Earth day web cast went to the math room and waited for their classes turn. When the time came our class went into the science room and started our broadcast. We interacted with our listeners, because people would type in questions into the chat room and they would ask us questions about what we learned. It was very interesting and fun to participate in, I would do that again if I had the choice.

Roman Soldier

Article posted February 18, 2010 at 07:09 PM GMT • comment • Reads 110

Here I am in Rome serving my time in the Roman army. I am Emilio. I have been in the Roman army since I was twenty years of age. I have been serving for five years now, so that means in twenty years I can retire, if I am not dead yet. It is getting very cold at night, but thankfully we have our sagums (cloaks) to keep us warm. My heart still aches because I had a girlfriend back in my hometown but in order to join the army I had to leave her behind. I am here fighting the Celtics; we have been fighting for awhile now. It is really sad because a lot of friends die while fighting here, just today my friend Luca got stabbed right in front of me. It was hard for me to leave him behind but I had to. Luckily I killed the man who killed him I stabbed him with my pilum or hasta (spear). My feet are killing me because I forgot to repair my caligae (boots) we have to repair them every night, but I forgot last night.

I feel that I am more fortunate than the Celts because I feel our armor and clothing are better and more sophisticated than the Celts. We have a Tunica (tunic)to keep us warm, a Scutum (shield)that is curved and protects us better than the smaller shields used by the Celts. Finally, we have a better Cassis (helmet) to protect our heads; our helmet is curved like our shields are to protect more of our heads. Our Saccus (kit bag made out of leather) weighs up to 60 pounds because it includes 3 days worth of food and building tools. Although I feel we are more prepared than the Celts, our bags are very heavy, and sometimes I get weary from carrying it. Today we are invading the Celts, they don't even have a chance against us. We are a more organized and stronger army than they are.

I am very proud to be a Roman soldier because I am committed to my country. A symbol of unity is the eagle on top of our standard (spear). I think we are stronger and we have a more organized army than the Celts. Now I am one more day closer to retirement. I have to go repair my sandals so what happened today won't happen tomorrow.

Fog Heart

FOG HEART

To be away from a dear friend
makes me so disoriented.
It seems like I forget everything,
and everything around me.
Just thinking about it hurts me.
It is like there is a blanket
of loneliness smothering me,
to the point that you couldn't forget
even tried.
How it hides my heart in a thick
layer of sadness,
drowning it in bleakness.
When you try to take a breath
and try to see where you are
all you can see is miles of nothingness.
When I see my friend again
it feels like there are clear skies ahead.
Until they say...
I have to leave again.
Here comes the fog all over again

LA Myth

Article posted January 27, 2010 at 03:28 PM GMT • comment • Reads 79

In ancient Greece the god of emotions, Metro, was his name. He had to go town to town restoring the happiness.  If he didn't, something bad would happen like what is in the rest of this story. It was strange everyone in that town was so nice and happy it had seemed like there was no bad emotions in that town; the god who controlled that emotion was Metro he got all of his power from the goodness. That is in the world. After awhile Metro's powers on the people would fade off and the niceness faded till it was gone. Metro went to go see if he needed to even use his magic. Anyway without thinking he used his powers and the people became nice. Metro was looking down at them to go check to see if he restored all the happiness in Greece but as he searched he saw one boy that he say once before that he got most of his power from since he was always so happy but it had seemed that he was no longer the nice, happy person he was once before. Once Metro uses his power he could use it again for a year. Metro was passing through the town disguised as a trader selling goods. He approached the boy "What is your name boy”said Metro. “My name is Timmy.” He said “What do you want?” he rudely “I would like to help you young Timmy.” “ With what?” Timmy interrupted “ Just look around” as Metro pointed to some people walking by. “ Then look at you” then Timmy looked at his reflection in the water “ Actually I didn't know I looked that good.” Timmy said. “look closer” Metro said getting a bit angry. Timmy looked again and saw something that he “ Thank you sir for that wast of my time. I will be going now.” Timmy said in a hurry and ran off. Later that day Metro was walking to leave. Then he stop because he herd something that sounded like arguing. He turned around “Well I don't care if you have more money than me, because I am better looking than you!” the man said sourly the other person started to cry and then Metro started to notice that almost everyone had different emotions. What he heard was even more frightening. They were planing a war on the neighboring town. Metro could believe what he was hearing he ran to talk to the person crying. “Who did this to you?” metro questioned “Timmy” the boy sobbed “Where is he?” “there” the boy pointed to a tower “why do you ask?” the boy ask curiously “Well um... to... tell him that I found his cat so I need to tell him were it is.” Metro lied “ok” the boy rubbed his eyes Metro ran to the tower. As Timmy got bigger with power from all the negativity from all the people. Timmy was striking people with bad emotions. “Timmy STOP!” Metro cried “why should I ?” Timmy yelled Because you are ruining everything!” Metro said ZAP! Timmy struck Metro with his new powers “Timmy Help!” Metro cried as he was slipping off of the tower window. Timmy ran to help him for he did not mean for that to go to far. He garbed his had and Metro struck him every single drop of power he had left. Metro fell to the ground. Timmy went to go see if he was ok. “are you ok?” Timmy asked “I did it” Metro said then closing his eyes for the last time. For you see Metro gave Timmy all of the niceness he had left. Timmy became the new god of emotions but he left the emotions to a balance so everyone could act the way they do now. FIN

MLK

Article posted January 27, 2010 at 03:25 PM GMT • comment • Reads 416

August 28 1963 Martin Luther King Jr. gave the “I Have a Dream” speech. The “ I have a dream” speech was about how all men are created equal so they should be treated like they are and not to judge them by the color of there skin or by their religion. This is a quote that really spoke to me; “that one day all of Gods children black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the old Negro spiritual Free at last! Free at last! Thank God All Mighty we are Free at last!” I thought it was very sad that a lot of people were judgmental of the other people just because they are not the same color or religion, but that is what makes everyone different in a good way.
