Should the US Continue to Celebrate Columbus Day

Article posted June 16, 2010 at 05:59 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1780

The world changed after Columbus found the new world in 1492. 1920 is when Columbus Day was first celebrated. It is on the second Monday on October. People are now starting to question if we should still celebrate Columbus Day. People are wondering if we are celebrating the right thing. In my opinion I don't think that we should celebrate Columbus Day and for several reasons.

When Columbus landed in the new world he didn't respect the natives. The natives gave him gifts and welcomed him to the New World but Columbus didn't show any affection to the natives. When he first saw the natives he thought that they would make good servants. He took some natives as slaves. He made them tell him what they new. He thought that he could take them as slaves and make them do whatever he wanted because he thought he was the first to find the New World. He wasn't even the first to find the New World. The vikings visited the New world and also the natives lived there so they knew about it. Columbus wasn't even the first European to find the new world. He says that if he didn't show them the technology then they would be dead but they have been alive for a long time. They were just fine before he came along. They weren't getting sick before he came along. He bought a disease down there and almost killed all of the natives. He didn't help them he only killed them.

Columbus thinks he helped the natives but he only killed them. He killed more than half the natives. They did not need him to survive because they were alive before he came and now they are dead. In my opinion I think we should not celebrate Columbus Day. He is not worthy a day in my opinion.

Roadkilll Graph

Article posted June 9, 2010 at 02:42 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1215

I did a project on the difference between roadkill on sunny days and rainy days. There was a total of 10 rainy day and 53 sunny days, for the weeks we have been keeping track of the roadkill. 5 roadkill's were on rainy days and 27 were on sunny days. 27/53 were sunny days and 5/10 were on rainy days, so if you found a common denominator then the fractions of the kills would be 270/530 for sunny days and 265/530 for rainy days. So that means that there is more roadkill during sunny days then on rainy days.

Stock Market

                                                                                                     Stock Market

The stock market purchases I bought was Gamestop, Wal-Mart, and Nike inc. I picked Gamestop because lots of people shop there especially when its near Christmas because parents might buy their kids video games or something. They also sell new video games so people can get a brand new video game their. The reason I bought Wal-mart is because lots of people shop their. There's lots to buy there you can buy food or toys or movies and many other things. I also bought Nike inc because its a good shoe store and lots of people go to buy shoes there. They have a big selection if shoes that are comfortable and they also don't break easily.

There are some changes I would make with my stocks. I would see Gamestop because I am not gaining much money on it and I also sometimes start losing money. I would also buy more of Nike inc because I gain 77 dollars a week and I have 63 stocks so I gain a total of 880 dollars. I would also invest in Apple because it makes a lot of money because of their new products.

Here is my advice for people who are going to buy stocks. First I would check to see what stocks are doing good. See if the stocks have been losing money and if they have how often have they been losing money if they have been losing money all the time or a lot then I would not recommend purchasing those stocks. If your stocks start doing bad I would sell them so you don't loss too much more money.

The Book of the Lion

Article posted May 3, 2010 at 03:21 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1463

I picked five items to represent a book I read (The Book of the Lion).  The reason I picked a ghost is because the main character can be very sneaky at times and he can run away and hide from people who want to kill him.  The reason I picked a cross is because the story is about the crusades and that is a religous war.  I also picked a boat.  The reason I picked a boat was because for a long while of the story they were on a boat to go the the battle ground.  I picked a jet because he is risky and flying a jet can be risky because something could go wrong with the controls and you could crash.  I also picked a sword because he uses a sword in the book to help fight in the war.

Earth Day

Article posted April 21, 2010 at 02:45 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1330

                                                                                       Earth Day

Earth Day is a once a year thing. Earth Day can mean many different things. Some people pick up trash, some people don't drive their car but mostly people turn off their power. They save power by unplugging or not using television, computers and other electrical appliances. Lots of people all around the world celebrate Earth Day.

There are 10,000 landfills in the U.S.A. That's a lot of toxins that are being let out into the air. The landfills take up a lot of space and also there using up to many resources. Company's make an item that is good, then they make a better and more expensive one, so you throw out your old one and get the new one. They would destroy the Earth for money. People throw things in the landfill that could still be used or that could go into the compost or recycling bin. There are people called Freegans. Freegans are people who go looking around in garbage for food that is still good. They sometimes find food that hasn't even been open yet.

There are three important things to do to help the Earth and they are the 3 R's , reduce, reuse, recycle. Reduce is the most important out of the R's. Its the best because you stop using as much and you wont pollute the Earth as much. The second most important is reuse. Reuse is the second most important because if you did buy a lot of stuff you can keep using it again and not just once. Recycle is the least important only because the others are better. You should still recycle even though its not the most important it still helps the Earth a little bit.

Kids have a lot of power of what the parents buy. They can use two things, one is called purchasing power which purchasing is having the money to buy it, and the second is called purchasing influence which is where kids nag their parents so much until they finally give in and buy it. Company's use these things as an advantage for them to sell items. Company's put ad's in movies and on boxes of food and other things. They put them in movies because the kids will want that, for example if the kids in the movie are eating MC Donald's then the kids will want to eat that. There can be advertisements for many different things other than food. When they put ad's on boxes of food they could take a famous character from a movie or cartoon then the kids will want that because one of their favorite characters is on the box. The reason this hurts the environment is because the company's make things that are using up too many resources on things that will be used once.

Higgins Armory

Article posted April 19, 2010 at 02:27 AM GMT • comment • Reads 1467

John Woodman Higgins created a museum with armor from different places.  It was created in 1929 in Worcester, Massachussets.  John Higgins started collecting armor and then put it all in the museum.  He put in 3,000 armors, and 1,000 weapons.

There are three types of armor.  One of them is called combat.  Combat is plate armor.  There is chain mail under all the armor.  If they were hit by a sword where the chain mail is, it wouldn't cut it but the person would feel the force of the hit.  Chin mail is heavy and with all teh other armor on its even more heavy.  Another typeof armor is parade.  Parade aromor is for partys.  If you have this armor t is also thicker than combat which means its heavier.

Armor went from almost full body armor to no armor.  In the 1400's knights had almost full body armor.  They had a few spots that were open.  In the 1500's they had full body armor.  In the late 1500's or early 1600's they had no armor.  The reason they had no armor was because there were guns and knights had guns.  The bullet would penetrate the armor so it was pointless.

Knights had different types of weapons that they used.  If horses with knights on them were charging at them then the knights would use long pointy spears so that it would either kill the horse so the knight would fall off or they would kill the knight then only the horse would live which wasn't a threat.  If they were right in the battle thery would have swords so they could watch their front, back and both sides.  Then knights with guns would stand a little back so they wouldn't get killed by swords.

The Higgins armory is a place that is for learning about the knights and armor that warriors used.  It is a fun experiance to learn about all the different armors and weapons that knights used.
