Christopher Columbus Day Debate

Article posted June 16, 2010 at 05:59 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1911

Christopher Columbus is famous for trying to get to India but finding America instead. He brought the Europeans to America and that's how we are here now and that's why we celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus Day was first celebrated in New York in the year of 1792. It was later declared a federal holiday when school would close, and businesses would close for the day. Then people started to argue if we should still celebrate this holiday and if it should be a federal holiday. In recent years it has become a large debate and I believe that we should not celebrate this holiday or not have it as a federal holiday.

One of the biggest reason why we shouldn't celebrate this holiday is because when Christopher Columbus got here he was greeted by many natives offering him gifts and looked up to him as there white god and slaughtered around ten thousand of them. Christopher Columbus did not kill all of them personally but he allowed the Natives to be murdered by his men and himself. He also forced them to work in gold mines day and night until they died for there own profit. If they declined to work in gold mines or ran away they would either be hunted down and killed or they would be taken away from there family if there family isn't dead already and sell them as slaves. The natives had there own religion with there own god and there own myths and legends and believed in there land but the Europeans came and made them stop believing there religion and took down there land and forced them to believe in what they had to believe in. Also, Christopher Columbus never actually "discovered" America because the vikings had already came and went and there was already people living in America.

Christopher Columbus definitely does not deserve a holiday because of all the crimes that he committed. If people still want to celebrate the death and slavery of the natives then they should, but I don't think it's worthy of a federal holiday and we shouldn't have businesses and schools close. I believe a lot of kids don't know what there celebrating and we should be teaching them everything about Columbus day and not just about the discovery of America and all the good things about the situation. Christopher Columbus is not worthy of his own holiday.

Guitar Bridges

Article posted June 11, 2010 at 02:27 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1301

Bridges

There are many types of bridges in our world. Some have more importance than others but there all related. Some are completely different like bridge jumping and making connections but one bridge that speaks to me would have to be a bridge on a guitar because I am a guitarist and without a bridge I wouldn't be a guitarist.

If you're looking at a guitar, the bridge would be right below of the pickups. The bridge holds the strings and the strings go from the tuning pegs down the neck and the body and connects to the bridge. It holds the strings tight to make it a high sound if you turn the tuning knobs. The bridge holds the string by going under the bridge and through a hole and kept in place by a little clamp that connects the bridge and the string. If you are playing guitar and it's too high pitched and you hit the string hard enough, the string will break and you have to take it out of the bridge and replace it for a new one. There's better bridges you can get that look better or have better quality.

Without a bridge there would be no guitar and no way to keep the strings in place. Without that, there would be no guitar in music which makes a large amount of the music in songs. I enjoy playing guitar and the bridge is a part of the guitar and the guitar is a part of music and music is my life.

Higgins Armory Museum

Article posted May 12, 2010 at 01:41 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1329

The Higgins Armory Museum was founded by Mr.Higgins in the 1930's.  It was his collection of ancient armor from the 1300's to the 1700's.  The museum contains many interesting facts, armor, and weapons.  Some types of armor was parade armor, tournament armor, and combat armor.  The trip was a great experience and a great job put together by the staff.  There was a lot of armor and a lot of important history to learn there.

Right when a visitor enters, there should be a man fully dressed in armor.  You can notice how he can easily run, jog, and sit down.  That was an advantage for armor but armor was also very heavy.  Armor could get up to 90 pounds!  He will show the viewer a sample of the three different armors I talked about earlier and teach you about how different weapons worked.  As i said, there is combat armor which was used for combat.  Sometimes they would use chain mail armor which was many small rings to help protect from slashing but not hitting with a sword.  There was also full body armor to be used in battle. Then came tournament for jousting which was where two men charged at each other with lances.  Then came parade armor which was not actually used to fight with but was used as decoration for the rich.

Then the visitor would make there way up the second floor which is a giant great hall.  They have armor, weapons and some other cool artifacts in display cases.  One weapon in particular is the lance.  Sometimes they could get up to around eighteen feet.  There is also a special weapon which is kind of like a lance with a hook to take down men on horses.  It is also very sharp at the end to kill horses.  The great hall has a lot of different weapons from different times and some of it is actually pretty interesting if you take time to read what they have to say in the small captions they have next to the case.

Another big thing in medieval times was fashion.  There were many different fashions that came and went and the cycle still runs today.  One fashion was that there shoes would be long and spiky.  Even after armor kind of died, the rich would buy armor themselves to strut around in and make people know that they're rich.  Sometimes the rich would even buy armor for there kids to make sure everyone knew they were rich.  Another piece of clothing in fashion then was big, "poofy" pants for the men.  That is basically what all the men were wearing then.

The Higgins Armory Museum is an amazing place for anyone who enjoys learning more about medieval times.  The Higgins Armory Museum has a ton of old armor and weapons once used by medieval warriors.  Many stories lie within the museum and it is a great experience to go in, and learn a lot about medieval times and all the armor and fashion and architecture and weapons.  Hopefully the Higgins Armory Museum will grow to be more successful and to continue to teach many more people in the future about so long ago in the past.

Earth Day

Article posted May 4, 2010 at 07:02 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1200

In school, all of the 7th grade celebrated Earth Day.  We are starting to be more green and to help earth become more green.  We watched a bunch of different videos about the earth being polluted and evil corporations taking away natural resources and telling us not to buy anything because it's bad for the earth.  They also told us about freegans and how we should eat our garbage and not waste.   We also did a garbage activity where we had to seperate the compost from the garbage.   We learned that alot of our garbage didn't have to go in the landfills and pollute our water.  We also had a webcast informing alot of people to help out the earth.  To me it was a very successful earth day.

Moguls Article

Article posted March 9, 2010 at 02:30 PM GMT • comment • Reads 435

Moguls are a very popular event in free style skiing. Some of the most popular skiers are involved. Germany currently have nine medals and USA have eight. In moguls the athlete has too raise and lift his or her knees in between each small bump of snow. There are two jumps in the course, which the first jump the athlete has to do a twist trick and then the second jump the athlete has to do a flip trick.

Mogul skiers have to train during the summer with there muscular strength and endurance. Some skiers practice there jumps onto tarp. They have to build up lower body strength so the skiers can lift and lower their legs as fast as they can. They also practice endurance which helps with moguls. They practice jumping by going up a chair lift during summer and going down a steep slide and at the end is a jump and they land on a long piece of tarp.

In the end, the mens moguls winner was Canada's Alexandre Bilodeau. For womens, world champion women mogul skier Hannah Kearney goes all out to bring home the gold for USA. We got amazing runs from all the athletes in the mogul skiing and some not so amazing runs from some of the athletes.

Mogul skiing got popular in 1971 and grew to be in the Olympics. Hopefully we will see many more talented skiers in the future take home the gold. Thank you for reading and hopefully learned a thing or two.

Romans In Scotland

Article posted February 20, 2010 at 12:19 PM GMT • comment • Reads 1300

Hello, I am Bamus Margerus. I am a great Roman warrior.  If you are reading this, then I am dead and all I can leave you is my story. My story begins in Rome when we were preparing to leave and to conquer Celtic villages.  Some Celtics were hostile while others were friendly.  We thought it would be simple, go in raid the houses and try not to shed too much blood, but we were wrong.

We had the advantage when it came to completely conquering one another because our forts were stronger and held up better.  But when it came to combat it was pretty equal.  While they had long swords we had spears and swords.  Most of the battle would have been done by land but some of the battle would have been fought on water.

Our plan was too travel and destroy any villages that would come in our way.  We did end up allying with some Celtic villages but others not so much.  Their bright and colorful clothing made them stand out from a lot of different things basically giving us a target.  We wore black jackets of metal plates which was helpful in combat.

We destroyed many armies of Celtic on our way.  It was very brutal.  Every second heads would fly and guts and blood would splatter on our four foot sword and the Celts body covering shield.  We would stab our swords into there stomachs and twist and pull it out so there guts would fall out why they would get on there knees gasping for air and slowly dieing.

When my army and I finally made it to one of the main Celtic village,we thought that we had finished our journey but standing there was Arthur, another great warrior with his army.  We both signaled our armies to stop.  He wielded his long sword while I had my spear.  We ran at each other and our weapons clashed together.  We both had small daggers which we drew out and stabbed each other below the shoulder.  We screamed and both fell to the ground, but before my vision faded i saw him drop as well with blood of dark red drip down his back while our armies collided and then, slowly, my vision went black.

Hazy Minds PJCH

Fog is like trying to remember something

Your mind becomes hazy and hard to think

Your so concentrated you cant even hear a 'PING'

If you know what I mean, you can make this link

Fog clears your mind and reassures you that everything is okay

If you're feeling down, and there's fog outside just take a trip down to the bay

This will help clear your mind

And total peace is what you will find

Myth Story

The Witch and The Feast PJCH

The great god Goosh was the god of food and wine. He always had either a enormous feast with the rest of the gods or he would be out finding a worthy mortal chef to do his cooking for him. The great god Sabty was going to his next feast and he never goes to his feasts so Goosh had to find the best chef there was.

Now, in the small city Astof, there was a small group of four witches who wanted to get rid of the gods for good. When they got rid of the gods, they would take Sabty's thunderbolt and destroy everyone's possessions and everyone would have to worship them but first they need to think of how to get rid of the the gods.

Goosh still needed a chef to cook for him at the feast so he sent down a messenger to each city of the land looking for the best chef ever. In Astof, the witches knew this was all happening because they would open up an animal and tell by the animal's organs. The witches made the rest of there plan and put it into action. When the messenger made it to Astof he announced that Goosh needed a chef to do his cooking. At first when the witches came out he said that there food was good but they didn't look the part. So the witches went back inside and the youngest witch, Betty, was short and very chubby. She had orange and curly hair that looked kind of like a place a rat would like to live. She had three teeth that were black and brown and she had big ears. She took a beauty potion and in less then a second she became very tall and thin. She had straight, beautiful, and blonde hair and she had a full set of teeth that were all pearly white and then she had the perfect size ears. When she went back outside she was accepted by the messenger and was took to the heavens.

When the messenger and the witch arrived at Goosh's palace, Goosh instantly gave the witch her first assignment. Goosh wanted her to cook him her best meal so she used a potion and gave it to Goosh who approved of it and gave the witch the job.

The night of the great feast, the witch put rat poisoning in all of the food. The only one who didn't eat was the great god Sabty because he wanted someone to tell him if it was good or not. When everyone started gasping for air and dieing, Sabty made everyone back to normal. He then took the witch and made her spell go away and he threw her back to earth.

As punishment, Sabty made a law that humans could not work for any god. He also cursed everyone on earth with throwing up and also created fast food so people would eat the disgusting food and throw up more. After that, everyone hated the witches for doing that and formed a giant mob and burned down there house and destroyed all of there possessions.

After all of this, the witches had no friends and was the center of attention but not exactly the kind the witches wanted in the beginning of there plan.

The bridge that connects Rye and New Castle was created in 1873 along with the Wentworth. Today, if the bridge was never made, New Castle would probably have to have there own middle school or a boat that goes from New Castle to Rye.

In this collage, I focused on different people's faces and emotions. I want my audience to see the way you can put different faces and objects into one piece of art work. To make this collage, I took a special board and found magazine clippings and used mod podge to glue them on and then created a design to paint on. My inspiration was to see all the different fasces and smiles from different people.

More Heavy Metal

Article posted January 8, 2010 at 02:04 PM GMT • comment (4) • Reads 932

More Heavy Metal by PJCH

I am one of the fans of the great music of heavy metal and I believe that there should be many more bands in America. Whenever I mention heavy metal people usually mix it up with the screaming death metal which is completely different. Heavy metal is my favorite type of music but it's getting more and more unpopular and to see it die off because of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers makes me sick.

A lot of people are being discouraged from playing heavy metal because there isn't much money in it but if WMG (Warner Music Group) were to sponsor more bands more heavy metal fans will hear about them. There are a lot of fans that want more heavy metal and not Dragon Force, which is a terrible band that plays fast but cant keep a beat and act like they are so cool. I bet there are a lot of fans of rock that never even heard of heavy metal and if there were more bands and advertisement, more people could find out of it. Although, if WMG were to sponsor more bands, people on YouTube would want to use it in their videos. That may not be a bad thing but the people at WMG think its bad to let people have their music in the video. They think it's stealing but no one can download it because obviously, there are people talking over it. Maybe the Warner Music Group could make a deal with Google and the rules of partnership and using their music.

With more bands that means more albums and CD's, so stores could get more money for selling their music. If there are more albums that means more tours. Although, if there are too many bands they would have to make more stages which could have more people get jobs like engineers, roadies, and technicians. Those people could be useful to help make the stage which is a good thing but if the stage was near old peoples houses there could be noise complaints. If they would make it in a valley or in a forest they would have to cut down trees or in some way kill animals and if they did that to make a stage, groups like PETA would get angry and protest and that wouldn't be good.

Some of the greatest bands of heavy metal are Metallica, Black Sabbath, Diamond Head, and Iron Maiden. Some consider Black Sabbath to be the best heavy metal band out there but Metallica remains my favorite. I would love to see more professional bands with original music instead of whenever I search a heavy metal and find a band called “Super Deth” which can only play Am I Evil and only play a show a year. A lot of people would be happy to see more original bands and I would too.

Now I hope you see my love for this music. I have been a fan of it for my whole life. It would be awesome if I could see more bands in the future being sponsored by WMG because one day I wish to make heavy metal as well. I hope you have learned something from this essay and help with the fight to get more heavy metal and less Taylor Swift.

When we went to Project Safeguard we had four classes. Two in the morning, then lunch, and then two more classes. We learned about having a good attitude when times are tough and how to get through those tough times. The speakers were very inspirational and definitely knew what they were talking about. Most of the speakers had great examples and different stories. I had really fun at Project Safeguard and will remember it. :)

Math Letter

Article posted December 22, 2009 at 06:38 PM GMT • comment • Reads 104

Dear Mom and Dad,
So far in math class, we have learned a lot more about math in Module 1 in the first half of the trimester. We have learned a lot about graphs, order of operations, probability, and much more and I would like to tell you about some of my favorite things that I have learned a lot about in Module 1.

In Module 1 the first things we learned about were line and bar graphs. We learned things about graphs and how there are many different types of graphs and how there's always a Y and X axis. We also found out that line graphs graphs time and percentage when a bar graph can graph how much of something someone has. Graphs make everything easier because you don't have to explain what its about.

The next thing we learned in math class during Module 1 was about patterns and predictions. To study that we used a computer simulation of a spinner and spun it 100 times. We learned about terms and term numbers and how to write equations about the term and term numbers. We were also taught that the term number tells the position of each term term in the order. We learned how to easily get the 100th term in the pattern by using the equations. Learning about patterns and predictions was definitely my favorite part of Module 1.

Another one of my favorite parts of Module 1 was the order of operations but is also known as PEMDAS. PEMDAS stands for Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction. We did many different problems with the order of operations and learned a lot about PEMDAS like multiplication and division goes from left to right and so does addition and subtraction.

Well this is the end of my letter and I hope you have learned more about the math we did in module 1 and order of operations, graphs, and patterns and predictions. Hopefully we will write more letters at the end of the next module and learn a lot more!

Sincerely,
PJCH

Planets

The sun is one au away from the sun which is about 93,000,000 miles away. Light goes at 186,000 miles per second and takes eight minutes for light to get to earth. A long time ago, a man name Ptolemy said that the earth was the center of the universe. Even without knowing for sure, he spread the information with others. He did this because in the bible it says that God made the universe and the heavens perfect. Ptolemy thought that if they didn't believe the earth wasn't in the center they would be saying that the universe isn't perfect and they wouldn't go to heaven. In the 1500's they didn't know what to call planets so they called them wandering stars. We have many planets in our solar system but unfortunately pluto is a long way away.
