Reasons why we should Celebrate Columbus Day

Every year the U.S.A celebrates a federal holiday called Columbus Day. A federal holiday is a day where most people get o ff from work and many government agencies are closed. I think we should celebrate him because in 1492 when he set sail with his three ships he made a huge impact on history in the New World. So here is the big question in the social studies world should we or should we not celebrate Columbus Day?
People say that he brought everything bad like sickness, witch he did but he did not even know. He actually gave the people of the new world better technology and life like the wheel, armor and the spinning wheel. Also people say all he brought was war and that is why we should not celebrate him. If we do not celebrate him because of war why should we celebrate the 4th of July? These are similar because they where both wars and people got killed and we still celebrate the 4th of July. Last thing he brought was new foods to the Europeans and to the new world he brought foods and also brought trade. The foods that he brought to the Europeans where corn, potatoes and many more staple crops. The fact is we do not celebrate the losers we celebrate the winners and exploring and settling the New World. His voyage helped start European exploration and settlement of the New World.
I hope I convinced you that we should continue celebrating Columbus Day. Not everything he brought to the New World was bad. He brought many good things to the natives and started a new economy with trade from the New World to Europe. His exploration of the New World is the reason that we are here today, and that is why we should celebrate it.

Higgins is a Museum of arms and armory. It is located in beautiful Worcester, Massachusetts. The building is three stories tall with medieval flags at the top and the inside of the building resembles a castle. The museum can be seen from the highway and is about two hours from Rye, NH. Higgins Museum houses over eighty million dollars worth of breathtaking armory and weapons! Standing in front of the different displays, visitors are taken back to the times when Rome fell and when Duke's and Kings wore highly decorated suits of armor. Visitors will learn about the types of armor and the types of arms (weapons) and the various forms of decorations used on armor.
There are three types of armor displayed at the museum. The types of armor are combat, tournament, and decorative. Combat armor consists of 200+ pieces of metal and weighs 45-80 pounds. Combat armor is very flexible and good at protecting knights from swords and arrows. Another type of armor is tournament. It was for spectator games and knight training. This armor is very heavy and it is difficult to move in. Visibility was also extremely poor because the slit in the visor to protect knight’s eyes was thin. After all the disadvantages it did have one advantage. The suit was that being of strong metal that was an excellent defense against lances and swords. Decorative armor was like a man’s suit in the Middle Ages and was lightweight. The suit was used to show wealth and royalty. This armor was not for defense and was only for fashion. There was even armor for dogs and children but this was primarily for the royalty. Depending upon the century the armor was made, the foot plates, or sabaton's would be different. If the armor was from the 1400's, the feet may have points at the top of them because that was the style. By the 1500's, those were gone and some of the armor had fliting (lines on the suits). A suit of armor like that now could go for as much as a Rolls Royce!
During the middle ages there were many types of arms. One of them is called the cross bow and is similar to the current day bow and arrow. The cross bow is harder to set and you have to pull a trigger to launch it. There are many types of spears that were used to defend and protect the kingdoms. One of the types of spears displayed in Higgins is called a lance. A lance is a 9' long spear and as time went on it got longer. This was popular because they were cheap, efficient and strong. Medieval fighters would get into small to medium groups and stick out the spears in rows of x-x. Once one row of men was gone, men and men on horses had to go through several more rows before they were stopped. Sometimes the knight could win. Most weapons were made from metal like pick-forks or shovels because that is what most people had. At the end of the middle ages gun and gun pounder began to take the place of the cross bows, spears, and lances.
There are seven different types of armor decoration: etching, engraving, embossing, blueing, gilding, damascening and painting. The ones that they show most common in the Higgins Museum are etching, engraving and painting. A technique that is in Higgins is painting of armor. Painting was one of the cheaper ways of decorating armor. There was only one color and that was black. One of the reasons the warriors would paint their suits was to prevent rust. One of the most common types of decoration was etching. Etching was when they would burn acid in armor for designs and put a varnish over it so it would prevent rust. One other type of design was engraving. Engraving is when they would use a sharp tool and engrave a design in metal. This was very hard to do and was expensive so not many armor was made this way. Last, embossing involved shaping metal itself, first heating metal and then hammering out the decoration from inside. This was a very expensive decoration and it would weaken the metal. It was used for ceremonial armors. Those were just a few of the variety of designs at Higgins.
At The Higgins museum, one can learn a lot about the arms and armor used during the medieval ages. It’s a great field trip for junior high students. Even though it may be a long drive to get there, the abundance of information it has makes it well worth the trip. It is a great museum!

In the past few weeks of school we learned a lot about stuff....literally. Stuff like where does stuff come from and where does it go. I know it is a lot of stuff to take in, so let's start with our class digging through stuff, the stuff is called “trash”. We did this stuff to help the environment, digging through 2 days of trash was pretty discussing but it was very interesting to see how much stuff could be either recycled or composted. In the end we found more then 75% of stuff that would be put in a landfill could be put in a compost or recycled.
The second thing we did in the class was we watched a video on where our stuff comes from.
We learned that around 80% of the stuff we buy within 6 months gets thrown away. Other stuff that we learned was that over 75% of plastic bottles do not get recycled.
In the end, I learned that more people need to recycle their stuff. We all need to compost. It's our world, let's take care of it.

Bobsleigh
This year more people watched the Olympics than American Idol. I loved watching the
U.S.A bobsledding team going at speeds up to 90 mph. It is a fun and exciting sport that puts
you on the edge of your seat.
Bobsledding is a sport with 2 or 4 people for men and 2 people for women. In the beginning
of the the sport they run really fast pushing the bobsled, and then tightly squeeze together and
bend down to get better efficiency so they go faster. The front person controls the bobsled, he
is the one in control making sure he does't hit the sides and turns the curves right to get max
speed.
Bobsledding goes back to the mid-19 century or about 150 years ago. It started as tourists
riding the ice frozen roads of the Alps in a toboggan. The sleds changed a lot over the years.
One of the changes made is the conversion from wood to fiberglass. Also, the shape of the
bobsled changed to make it more aerodynamic to help it go faster. In addition, there have
been improvements in the outfits by making them tighter and the helmets to make them more
curvier for aerodynamic improvements.
Training is hard for the bobsledding team. They have to do 2-3 runs everyday. They also have
to stay in shape by lifting weights so that they are able to push the bobsled. It takes a lot of
strength to be on the bobsledding team.
I'm sure we will see bobsledding in future Olympic games. This year, Germany came in first
for the most medals received in bobsledding. Canada came in second and the United States
came in third. I hope that the United States will be first next time.

Romans in scottland

Hi name is Marcus Pandodias, I am a Roman citizen and soldier. I am 20 years old so you know I just began my service to the Roman Empire. I am fully prepared and trained to work in this professional army.
I am a Roman soldier preparing to attack the Celts. I am marching to my base to sleep in the barracks before the war tomorrow. I can see the huge walls to the base so I know we are getting close. I enter the gates that protect us. I went to the workshop to prep my armor and sword, they are both made up of heavy metal. I sewed my red woolen tunic together, because I ripped it while I was walking here. I need to repair it because it gets very cold at night, and I want to make sure that I can keep warm so that I get sleep and am ready to fight the Celtic warriors.
It is now time for me to check in with my commander at the headquarters, to see what time we have to leave. I found out that we are leaving two hours before sunrise, so I know that I have to have my kit prepared and ready to go. When I get back to the barracks, I will drop my heavy armor, that seems to be better protection than the Celts armor, ours is more curved and protects my body more. My meal tonight will be snails. After I eat, I will be going to bed; it is difficult to sleep in the barracks, because there are many other soldiers and we are very nervous about having to go into battle against the Celts.
The next day I will wake up, get up, go to the baths where I will wash up and see the commanders as they come out of the command quarters. I go back to the barracks to get dress for war. I put on my heavy body armour like my metal chess plate and metal helmet, which the Celts do not have. I feel very prepared with my armour because we have the finest of any other countries.
I am going out and I started to see the Celts. While we are marching I see how poor their armour is. It is hardly anything. The helmet is made from leather. The only thing that can protect them in their shield. They have a simple long weapon to defend them. I think we will win the battle.
I look at their fort from far away and it does not look advanced at all. They only have simple buildings that don't look permanent. Their is no protection other than a small wall. We are only a few more feel away from the Celts and we are starting to fight. I will fight with my spear and my sword to defend and be victorious.
In the end we had won the battle against the Celts. It was bloody and hard to see some of my fellow soldiers die. We took the Celts shields and other weapons and brought it back to our fort. I am going to rebuild a city and live here for awhile until the next war.

Tory woke up and rolled out of his hard dirty bed. He sleepwalked into his dirty dark clothes and went to the worst place every to him, school. On the way to school, Tory lied to his mom and dad that he did his homework. When his teacher asked where his homework was, he passed him a yellow sticky note that said,
Tory was in the hospital and did not have time to do his homework.
Thank You,
Troys Mother Ari
The only problem is that note was counterfeit, but the teacher believed it.
The next class was science and there was a quiz. Since it was online he took the password and did not do the quiz. Instead, he was playing games on his computer. He was going to take the quiz at home where he could look at his notes which was cheating. But about 95.99% of the time he could get away with it. The other classes he slept in or was not paying attention because he stayed up to midnight watching his favorite T.V. show.
It was the end of the day and he was in his mom's car and he was texting about how horrible his day, and bang=http://! The car crashed in to a immeasurable armor truck. The next thing he heard was tons of sirens all at once and then zilch, nothing for a long time. He was dead. When he went to god he was still very mean but the god saw the weeping mother. He could also see the dash of sadness in Tory. So god changes Tory's name for security to Tornado, which was much longer but similar to Tory. And since he seemed to have a lot of energy he made him part of bad weather. If god did not do this he would disturb everything. The plan was for him to leisurely let out energy instead of letting it out all at once. But Tornado (Tory) could not let out his energy any time, only a few times a year and in certain places
. The map shows on the side were he likes to go and place were god tries to make him not go. The red spots are his favorite spots and the whiter spots is where he does not. He likes Oklahoma because that's were his mom lives and he likes seeing her. That is why we have Tornadoes so Tory can slowly let out some of his fierce energy.

MLK was born in large town called Atlanta,Georgia. He was a reverend that had a dream, that one day this nation “won't judge someone by their color,” but by their skill. This was MLK's dream, just a dream at his time. You would think by now everyone would be treated equal by their skill not by their skin color. But sadly this is not 100% true but most people believe it's true that “all men are created equal.”

Change the pizza for the better just do it

Change is good! We have Domino's pizza every Friday of the school year, and I want to get Papa Gino's. My brother has Papa Gino's at RES. New Castle and RJH used to have Papa Gino's. I did some research and I think Papa Gino's would be the better pizza.
We should make this change for many reasons, but most importantly health. Papa Gino's has more than 40% less FAT per slice than Domino's. Papa Gino's has less grease than Domino's. Also, Papa Gino's pizza is completely peanut/tree nut free. These are a few of the health reasons why I want to change the pizza.
I think changing the pizza will increase the amount of people who buy it. The reason I think that is because more people like Papa Gino's in my LA class. One student said she thinks it is healthier, I do too. I think more people will buy it because people like new food on the menu and we have been eating Domino's pizza since I came to Rye Junior High.
Don't you think it is a good idea? Change the pizza for health, and in my opinion and many other opinions, taste. It costs a little more than Domino's, but isn't our health worth it? That is why I want to change the pizza to Papa Gino's.

A few weeks ago we attended Project Safeguard. You ask, what is project safeguard? It is a day full of classes most of them fun. The classes were about communications, goals setting, and attitude. We had options of what classes we had. There were classes for kids and adults and both (kids and adults). I learned how to set goals, communicate a little better and how to have a better attitude. Special guests came into teach us. You can see a photo of us and a newspaper article @ http://www.seacoastonline.com/articles/20091208-NEWS-912080379.

In science we were very lucky to have moon rocks. They came in very small samples and were hard to see without a microscope. We also talked to Chinese students who spoke English too. We talked about the moon rocks. The Chinese school was in California. We were able to communicate with them through Skype. It was fun to have seen the moon rocks. Only very few schools get to see them. I think we are very lucky.
There are 3 rocks and 3 solids on the lunar sample. The 3 rocks are Basalt, Breccia, Anorthosite. The 3 solids are Mare,Highlands,Orange.
NASA had actually ordered the astronaut back into the lunar module and didn't want him to go after the orange soil because he was running low on air. The astronaut went and got it anyway because he thought it was interesting. He took a chance doing that, but because of him, we got to see something that we would never have seen.

Dear Mom,
In Math we have been working on very importing things that were going to use in the future. like bar graph/line graph, Probability, frequency table. In the letter I'm going to show you about all of those things and talk about what we did.
The first thing I'm going to talk about is bar graph/line graph. We used frequency tables to show information on are graph. And then we had to decide whether we should use a bar or line we learn that we use line graph hen you show long time and bar graph to show category's like favorite color or sport. There are many ways you could use a line/bar graph this is just some.
The next thing I'm going to talk about is probability. Probability is use when you need to find a chance of some thing happening. For example if there was 1 red cube, 2blue cubes, and 1 orange cube the chance of getting a red is ¼, blue is ½, and orange is ¼ , so there a 50% chance that it will be blue and a 50% chance that it will be red or orange. Probability can be very useful to predict the future but it is not always 100% accurate its more like 70% accurate.
The 3rd and finally thing I'm going to talk about is about frequency tables. Frequency tables can be used in every thing I talk about. You use a frequency table to show data like how many times you get heads or tales. You tally how many times you get heads and tails. After that you could put it on a graph to see it clearly. There are lots of other ways you could use frequency tables.
Hope you enjoy my letter there was a lot I learn in this module this is just 3 things out of 10 things I learn like order of operations.
Thanks For Reading
