Christopher Columbus Celebration

In 1934 Columbus Day became a national holiday, but in recent years there have been huge controversies about this federal holiday. In 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew arrived in the Americas, becoming the first European to reach what was known as the New World. After Columbus's discovery of the Americas, the Europeans began to expand their territory, and they set up many colonies in the New World. These colonies brought with them the Europeans who shared their knowledge with the natives, and improving the New World. Columbus Day should continue to be celebrated because it symbolizes the important civilization that has created our modern country, changing our world.
Christopher Columbus was the first European explorer to discover the Americas for the Europeans. Although some people claim that Columbus had technically not discovered the Americas, because there were already native people living there. Columbus discovered the new world for the Europeans, teaching them about the vast new world. Columbus was able to teach the Europeans about this undiscovered land, which allowed them to colonize and improve the Americas.
The Europeans who traveled in the New World brought many new things and ideas that were shared with the natives, in return for the Europeans usage of the New World's natural resources, this was called the Colombian Exchange. The Native Americans were actually a highly civilized people, but they lacked in one major area, they had no complex, or even simple, technology. Without this technology the Native Americans were never able to become prosperous with the land of the New World because it was just too difficult of a task for them. When the Europeans came to the Americas they brought their culture, and many new technological advancements with them. The Europeans were equipped with items such as the wheel, and weapons like the gun. These new advancements allowed the Americans to begin to do many tasks easier than before. Without the help of the Europeans and their technology, the Native Americans would probably still be in the primitive state that they were in prior to Columbus's discovery.
During the process of western colonization, the Europeans were able to use more of the natural resources located in the Americas, benefiting many people. The Europeans began logging and using some of the vast amounts of forest that exist in the Americas. The Europeans were able to prosper so much from the land, that they were able to send staple crops, or specific foods that are relied on by many people, back to Europe. The original settlers, those that followed, were able to make the most out of the plentiful land that could be found in America.
When Columbus discovered America for the Europeans he began a new era of ideas and colonization. The Europeans brought new ideas, culture, and technology with them which shaped the Americas for good. After Columbus's discovery of Europe, the Europeans were able to fulfill the New World's potential, something that the Native's had not been able to do. All of these things that Columbus and his fellow Europeans brought with them to the Americas is something that should be celebrated.

The Imaginative Side of Bridge Jumping

I was ready now after waiting a week for the right tide to roll in. I looked down toward the water, reminding myself that I had been swimming on the other side of this bridge less than an hour before. I'm quickly over my nerves and before I knew it I was plummeting toward the ocean. I hit what some people call freezing water, but after living here all my left it felt like the perfect water. I began to sink lower into the dark depths of the ocean, I tried to swim toward the air but in vain. I notice that something slimy is grabbing my leg and bringing me farther down. Salt water rushes around me as I open my eyes, staring at the jaguar that is pulling me. I was shocked at what I was seeing, and temporarily thought that I must be hallucinating. An animal that looked like an aqua version of a jaguar, with flippers instead of claws, and gills on the side of its neck, had a hold of my leg. Suddenly the massive animal released me, and I began to float back toward the top, pushing myself up along the way. I began to loose any common sense that I had, wanting desperately to just suck in the water around me. Something in the back of my head convinced me to just wait a few more seconds, then I would be able to get as much air as I want.
I take in a massive breath of air when I finally reach the surface, swimming immediately toward my family on the shore who were waiting for me, I could see a look of shock planted on all of their faces. While I was swimming I began to feel a shooting pain in my leg, but I kept swimming knowing that I needed to reach land soon because fatigue already gripped me. As I pulled myself out of the water, I saw a deep gash in my leg that was already dripping with blood, I used my towel to take the blood off, and suddenly the pain went away. I looked back on my cut and noticed it had disappeared and was replaced by the symbol of a blue trident. I was amazed by the amazing healing power that I now had, but completely flabbergasted at why it had happened. I began to feel overheated and dry, not sure why though because I should have been wet from my last jump. I decide I'll take a quick dip in order to cool myself off, and that's when I noticed the blue fins that had taken over my feet. Scales began to crawl up my legs gluing them together, and in a matter of seconds I had a fish's tail instead of legs. I wanted to explore now that I could swim faster, I dove under water and realized that I could breath. As I swam under the bridge, I noticed a lot of movement farther down so I swam in that direction. I was soon in the midst in what seemed to be a castle, completely filled with a mer-person population. I approached one mermaid and found that I could speak fluently under the oceans depths. I learned that this was in fact a kingdom, and that here was actually a castle under every bridge. I decided that I should go back to the surface to let my parents know about my transformation. I glided toward the top, and when I reached it I quickly told my parents about what had happened. They were completely shocked and amazed so as a family they all jumped the bridge.
Within 10 minutes I was now part of one of the best mer-families ever. The only bad part about my new life, was when people would jump the bridge above me and I wished to jump as well. Overall, I loved being a mermaid, living under the bridge in an amazing castle, and being in the ocean forever.

Stock Market Lessons
I picked three stocks to invest in, Google, Apple, and TJX Companies Inc. I picked Google to invest in for various reasons. Google is a global company that is used a lot by people because it is so easy to use. When I looked at Google's background information it showed that according to the data Google's worth should go up. I also chose to invest in Apple because it is a very popular company that is always creating new things. Also when I looked up stock market information about Apple, I saw that the prices of its stocks had been growing rapidly. I also bought stocks from TJX Cos. Inc. because each stock was relatively cheap at less then $40 per stock, so I could get a lot of stocks. TJX also seemed to have a very good record because the prices for individual stocks seemed to be climbing. I picked all of these stocks for different reasons, but they all had one thing in common, optimistic background information.
After all of my stock market research, I have a few changes that I would have liked to make. When I finally sold Google, after 24 weeks, I was actually losing money on it. To change this, I would have either not bought Google to begin with, or I would have sold it on December 31, when it had temporarily rose up about $50. Now, after watching Apple for 24 weeks, I think it would have been better if I had bought more Apple stocks because they made me a lot of money. I also should have bought more stocks from TJX because all of these stocks have made me small amounts of money. I also would have sold TJX stocks at week 23, when it was at my record high of $47.69. Although I would change a few things about my stock choices, I still think that my original choices were fine because in the end I made a lot of money.
After watching these stocks for 24 weeks, I have learned many things that would benefit anyone interested in buying stocks. If anyone is interested in buying Google, I would suggest selling this stock whenever it is at a high price because this stock continually changes quickly. I think that Apple is a great stock to invest in because this company is always coming out with new stuff, that makes its worth even higher. TJX is also a very good stock to invest in because although each individual stock only rose about $8, when you have a lot of stocks, you make a high profit. Also, for any stock, it is always important to check the background, and reliability of each company before you make any decisions.

Higgins Armory Museum

Higgins Armory Museum
Higgins Armory Museum is filled with armor and weapons that were used centuries ago. Ranging from one of the only remaining Roman gladiator helmets, to the armor of a medieval knight; this museum is full of important artifacts that teach us about the history of armor. Mr. Higgins collected armor and weapons from all over the world focusing mainly on the Medieval Era. Before Mr. Higgins died, he had the museum built, with the second floor modeled after a cross between a cathedral and a castle, in order to have a place to show people his collection. At the Higgins Museum people are taught about various types of armor, the history of armor, and of course the fully armored knight.
There are three major types of armor, tournament, parade, and combat armor. Tournament armor was used mainly in the middle ages and was solely used as protection in a sport called jousting. Jousting was when two heavily armored knights, normally on horseback, charged at each other with a 15 foot long blunted stick, trying to knock each other off of their horses. Thick armor, weighing nearly 100 pounds is worn by these knights in order to keep the mortality rate down during these matches. Parade armor was elaborately decorated armor used by wealthy people in order to show wealth and status. Armor, especially the parade armor was extremely expensive and unnecessary, worn to parades and some parties they were sparsely used. Combat, or war armor is the third major type of armor, and has been worn for most of human history. The main purpose of combat is to protect its user by allowing the person to move around, while still being incased in armor. During the Medieval time period, knights were able to wear armor that fit around their joints; previously there had simply been a gap around the knees and elbows. Over time, combat armors purpose has changed dramatically.
Armor has played a major part in human history, but it has changed a lot since its invention in prehistoric times. The usage of armor began when people started using individual pieces of armor such as the helmet and the shield. Over time, more armor was added to the soldier for protection, until the entire soldier was covered in full armor. Soon muskets were developed, although they were unreliable at first, they changed the use of armor. The musket is a long distance weapon that when used by many people, could stop a fully armored knight, so these soldiers exchanged less armor for the ability of more agility. Armor was not used again until the American Civil War, at which point small amounts of armor were being used. Since the use of armor in the Civil War modern soldiers have been covering themselves in armor. The use of armor is used in cycles, through periods of no armor, and times of full armor.
In the Medieval Era, the first fully armored soldier appeared, the knight. Knights arrived in battle on top their loyal and trained war horses. Both knight and horse wore armor in order to protect the expensive pair. The horse would be equipped with its own helmet; it also had armor surrounding the saddle in which the knight would sit. The knight was dressed in combat armor that fully covered him, but still allowed him to ride with relative ease. The knight only had a few week points that enemies would aim at, under the arms, and in some places where armor connected and there was a small area of undefended flesh. Over time, these weak points were reduced but still the cause of most fatalities. Knights would fight with a 10 to 14 foot long bill, or lance. With the combined weight of the horse and knight at the end of the lance, it was a vicious weapon. If a knight's lance was ever broken or dropped, they were also equipped with a sword, which although it wasn't as effective as the lance, still posed as a threat. The knight was an extremely formidable foe because of its protection and weapons.
Armor has played an important part in all of our wars and times of peace. From the beginning of armor, when the first helmets were being used, to the fully armored knight, armor has served to protect people. Although at some times in our history, armor has not been used due to the inventions of revolutionary weapons, it has always been called upon again whenever the situation calls upon it. Armor from parade to combat has shaped our history and culture.

Trash Studies

|
During our studies of trash and its disposal, we had an assembly where we separated trash from the lunch room that had been collected over two days. Before our garbage was separated, we had a total of 87.5 pounds of trash. After taking this information, everyone got a chance to separate the trash into three categories, recyclables, compostables, and true trash. After a while we had all of our trash sorted, and we were amazed to find that most of our trash was actually compostable, and only 25 pounds of our original trash actually had to be thrown away. I think that many people enjoyed this assembly because it was straight forward, only telling us about true facts, and how we could reduce our waste. The leaders did not attempt to get us to believe their own opinions, and they simply focused on what we could do to help the environment by getting rid of our trash. We were shown the consequences of not littering, such as how animals our dieing after eating our trash. Now, my entire grade has an education about our waste and we can prevent future waste.
In school we have been having people come into school to teach us about trash and where it goes after we throw it away. We had to watch numerous videos as part of this unit. One specific video that we watched from the internet was The Story of Stuff. I think that you should definitely watch this video, in order to see all of the controversial information being shown to junior high schoolers. According to this video humans are a selfish species that are centered around buying, using, and throwing away. We were led to believe that as Americans specifically we use up other countries resources, destroying their land, just so that we can be happy. In this video we were shown a sketch of a dead world, and told that it was all our fault. I found that this video was completely twisted and false for many reasons. For example of one of the changed facts, we were told that we have destroyed 96% of our original forests. This is fake because we were not told anything about how most businesses who use resources, in this case trees, replenish this resource, by planting more trees. Also, this film was supposed to be about our waste, but when the speaker started showing us cartoons of a tiny government official shining the shoes of an oversized business man it seemed completely off topic and untruthful. We were also told by the speaker that she almost used a tank to symbolized the American government, and she went on to describe how taxes were going toward war efforts. These “points” that she seemed to be slipping in were one sided, off topic, suggestions that were completely unnecessary and should not have been brought up. I have a huge problem with the fact that we are being taught these twisted opinions in school. Many kids believe everything they are taught in school, because after all isn't that the place where people are educated? So when somebody comes in and brainwashes the kids in order to get them to believe their slanted side of this story, its indoctrination and it should not be allowed. At least if you are going to tell children to believe someone's story it is important to show people the other side of this story.

I read the book The siege of Macindaw which is part of the Ranger's Apprentice series by John Flannigan. I have created this abstract collage in order to represent key parts of the story. This short list describes the objects in my collage, and what role they have in the story.
Jagged Red Paper ~ War~a key part of the story even one of the main characters is a warrior ~ The shape represents the mountainous setting
Yellow~ Bravery~All of the characters in this book are confident and not timid in the least
Blue ~ Youth ~ This is not a story about adults~ All of the main characters are in their late teens
White~ Alyss is a main character who is a member in the diplomatic service ~ She always wears white because it is the color for the diplomats
Tree Needles~ This story mostly takes place in a dark forest that is thought to be magical and sinister
Broken Twig~ Betrayel~ In many key points of this story people thought of as allies turn against the main characters
Rock~ Mesmerization~ Alyss is mesmerized on many occasions by a special stone, during these times she unwillingly spills key information
Bow~ Will is an expert with his bow and arrow because he is a trained ranger
Sword~ Horace is one of the best knights and he is also Will's friend

In science class we created graphs about our favorite things. I did my graph about favorite sports. When we had finished our graphs we sent them to a school in Belize where students added to these graphs. When the graph was complete, I used wordle to create this image, the larger the word is, the more popular it was according to this survey.

I have selected three different companies to "buy" shares of their stocks. I have been following these companies throughout the year, tracking their progress, and hoping to make money. I have watched as the DOW has rose and fell, bringing the worth of my stocks along with it. I am currently making the most money off of these stocks, that I have all year. I think that they will continue to rise as the DOW rises. It is hard for me to imagine, but just a few weeks ago, I was in the red, losing hundreds of dollars.

A couple of years ago my cousins came up from Denver to visit with us. When they arrived we went down to the beach, bringing with us our beach wagon, dinner, and lots of fun. We decided that we would enjoy the beautiful evening at the beach, but our plans were destroyed when we watched dark grey clouds rolling in, accompinied by the sound of distant thunder. We began to pack up our metal wagon with all of our beach chairs, hoping to be able to run home before the storm arrived, but luck had left us, so this did not work out. It began to pour and lightning started flashing. We had walked to the beach so we had nowhere to run but home. Abbandoning the wagon, we sprinted toward home. Lighting flashed so close to us we could see it touch down a few times. Terrified, we were only able to make it halfway home, where we decided to run to our neighbors porch. We began our run home when it seemed to calm down a bit. After a few more minutes we finally made it home, as we came into the house, leaving a trail of water behind us, we felt immensly relieved.

Ski Jumping

Ski Jumping is a sport that has been part of the Winter Olympics since 1924. During ski jumping, the athlete first skis down a ramp toward a jump to gain as much speed as possible. This entrance is called the in-run. When the athlete reaches the jump, they take off of it at speeds around 95 km per hour. When the skier is in mid-flight their skis create a V shape that is key to a correct flight. Athletes travel around 90 to 100 feet through the air before they finally touch ground. This is not an easy sport by any standard, and it takes hard core training to be able to even compete.
Skiers are always training and practicing in order to improve their skills. An average day of training for an Olympic athlete consists of 12 to 15 jumps. Muscle, especially leg strength, is a key part of the athletes performance. During the off season, skiers actually practice on land covered by white plastic shingles. The take off is an extremely important part of the competition because it decides how far they can travel through the air, so athletes spend a lot of time on this. As you can see, although these skiers have natural abilities, it takes tons of practice to be able to rise to the Olympic level.
There are two rounds in each ski jumping competition. The first round is the qualification round that is made up of 50 people. By the end of the of the first round only 30 people can go on to the next round. Skiers are evaluated on distance and speed by the judges located in the judges tower that is next to the hill. During the second round, like all Olympic sports, the top three winners receive a medal.
In past Olympics there have been a few countries who are constantly receiving medals for downhill skiing. Norway, Finland, and Austria have received the most Olympic medals for this sports. As of the Olympics in Torino in 2006, Norway had received 28 total medals for downhill skiing throughout all of the winter Olympics. Finland has won 22 Olympic medals closely followed by Austria with 20 medals.
Nicholas Alexander, Peter Frenette, and Andres Johnson were some of the American athletes who competed in ski jumping in the Olympics on behalf of the U.S.A. Among these skiers, Alexander and Frenette were able to compete in the qualification rounds. During the qualification round, both Americans were not able to receive a medal. Instead Ammann from Switzerland claimed gold followed Malysz of Poland, and Schlierenzauer of Austria. Ammann won with a score of 144.7 points, while Frennette received 90.6 points, and Alexander made 79.2 points. Although ski jumping is a very difficult sport, people from many countries participate in it.

JOURNAL
This is property of Quintus Praenomen
Former Roman Soldier
January 21, 368 Common Era
As I made my way to the barracks, I felt deeply tired, and I let my mind wander. We had already been settled in northern Scotland for many years and life as a Roman soldier was becoming very repetitive and isolated. Although other legions were said to have been in high contact with the Celts, we had only met the Celts a few times, and it became apparent that although they considered the arts and music to be very important, it was obvious that they lacked in a unified army. Most Romans felt very confident if the Celts decided at any point in time to revolt, we would be able to defend ourselves easily, we were totally wrong.
One day as we were performing drills in the parade ground that surrounded our fort, the Celts came. As the Celts approached I could not help but notice how different they were. Their appearance alone was a drastic change. While all Roman soldiers wore heavy metal armor, the Celts did not have any type of body protection other than their large shields. Although the Celts had an advantage over us because of their surprise attack, I felt confident that we could still win. Our Roman legion was a very unified and disciplined army that was already preparing its defensive stance, while the Celts charged blindly without any visible leader. As the Celts approached they began to throw their spiral tipped spears at us, and they quickly removed much of our front line with their deep gouges. Their was a major flaw to these spears though, unlike our spears that were made of softer metal that immediately crushed on impact, these Celt weapons could be thrown back at them. As combat became closer, the Celts released their swords from their chains around their waists, and began their slashing. They were quickly counter-attacked by the strong thrusts of our double edged blade. Although we fought well on that fateful day, the Celts with their strong motives won this small battle against the overpowering force that had been in power across Scotland for many generations. Being a Roman I was taught never to surrender even when I was sure there was no way that we could become victorious. I was one of a few lucky Romans who escaped with their lives on this fateful day, only to become a Celt's hostage.
As we approached the Caledonian village I immediately noticed the differences between it and the Roman forts. Surrounding the village was a wall, although it was similar to the walls surrounding Roman forts, it became evident that these walls were less sturdy than the 3 meter high walls I was accustomed to. As I entered I was amazed by the differences of the buildings alone. While the buildings in Roman forts were large rectangles, these two story houses were circular. At the top of the stone structure, there was a thatched roof that I had never seen the likes of before. We were brought into one of these circular houses and left alone, if you didn't count the guard standing outside of the door. Once we were inside we began to create a plan of escape, we decided that it would be best to leave during the night. When darkness fell we crept across the village silently, on our way out I noticed a strangely shaped thatched roof building that I guessed was a souterrain. During my time in the Roman legion I had been told of these underground cellars that the Celts were said to be using to store grains and other foods. As soon as we were out of the village we began to make our way to the nearest Roman fort, in search of safety.
During this battle and short time as a hostage, I realized that although the Romans and Celts are two very different types of people, neither is always better than the other. When I first witnessed the Celts, I mistook their differences to be primitive compared to our ways, but I quickly understood that although they lacked the ground-breaking weaponry and tactics of the Romans, they fought with all their soul for what they believed in. As a Roman I fought on behalf of the empire with only a goal of expanding the empire, and pleasing our generals. The Celts on the other hand fought for the freedom of Scotland's natives against the tyrants that had taken it away from them. Although the Celts had only won one battle so far, they now understood their potential. I have, and always will be loyal to the Roman Empire, but I have come to respect my enemy the Celts, for although we have many cultural and militaristic differences, they are very powerful foe.

Lost in a world of blurred thoughts
Questions float aimlessly
Answers are scarce
Unable to think
What is the point in thinking though
When I am content to watch the world
passing by
As if a veil separates me from life
I live without life
Understanding seems irrelevant
As the fog passes
Everything is clear
I understand

Rolling across the raging sea
Drifting through unsettled forests
Concealing everything in its way
Light
Attempting to enter this dismal silent world
Vain endeavors are ceased
Light cannot exist here
Only fog
Dense
Overpowering
Pessimistic
Fog
New day
New attitude
New fog approaches
Dazzling
Exquisite
Non-existent
Fog

In August of 1963 Reverend Martin Luther King Junior created a speech that has changed the lives of all people living in America. Martin Luther named this influential speech the I Have A Dream. During this speech, Martin Luther King expressed his feelings about racial tensions, and his dreams for the future. In the 1960's black and white people were treated very differently, solely because of their skin color. When he said, “I have a dream that one day the sons of former slaves, and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of Brotherhood.” Martin suggested that one day everyone would be considered equal. Martin proposed his ideas on how we could change this issue. In his I Have A Dream speech, he also said that in order for this freedom to occur, everyone would need to achieve freedom, in a peaceful way.

Artist Statement
In my collage I incorporated three major elements of art, movement, line, and color. I used water in my collage, to show flowing action. I also made my paint flow like water. I want my audience to see connections with water, and other natural elements. I think that my artwork is successful, because the paint and the collage go hand in hand. I really enjoy the ocean, so I based my collage on water, but I also had other subjects in my collage, In order to mix things up.
First, I found a bunch of pictures related to nature, from various magazines. When I selected a photo, I cut it out, and temporarily placed it on my canvas. When I had an ample amount of photos, I used mod-podge to glue them to my canvas. When I was satisfied with my collage, I began to make a sketch of the pattern that I would paint. When I liked my sketch, I transferred it to a large piece of paper. Next I taped the paper to parts of my collage that I didn’t want to be painted. Then I painted the visible parts with gesso. Later I took off the paper from my collage and added color to my artwork.

I think that an extra Friday block for 7th graders at Rye Junior High would be very beneficial. During this Friday block students that have fallen behind will have time to catch up. Students that are caught up will have time to play in group games. This block could work in many ways because it would also act as an incentive for kids to try hard throughout the week. In the Elementary School we had a similar block that worked great for both the students and the teachers.
Even though this is not a team challenge time it allows students to work together. During the game time kids will learn how to cooperate together. During this time it is very important for kids to behave, so that the games will be super fun. This class will be a time for students in different classes to have fun with one another.
A Friday block would serve as an incentive for kids to keep up and behave in school. Kids that have kept up with school work will be allowed to participate, but if students have fallen behind it will be a time for them to catch up. This Friday block will also encourage kids to behave, because if they are given a detention at any point in the week they will not be able to participate.
The Friday Block will give kids time to catch up in any subject that they are having trouble with. If a student was absent during the week, or has simply fallen behind, this time will allow them to work with a teacher on subjects that they missed. This block will also allow parents to know that their kid has not fallen behind. Students will be able to feel assured that they have all the extra help they need without staying after school.
Even though this Friday block will take away some class time, it is still a very important part of school. In order to have time for this block, the core classes would need to be a bit shorter. Sometimes shorter blocks are better for kids and students because students are able to stay more focused. Although teacher supervision is necessary, teachers will be able to have fun too. Teachers will be able to connect with kids in a different way then can be achieved in a classroom. Although a few things will need to change in order for this to happen, I think that it will be well worth it.

Project Safeguard was a day that we learned about having a good attitude, and making good choices. During Project Safeguard a few public speakers taught classes about choosing to have a good attitude. The speakers were very inspirational, and taught us a lot about various life lessons. We also participated in group games, that helped us learn about group dynamics.
At project safeguard I learned many things. Although you might face difficult things, it is important to keep a positive attitude. The speakers told us about their personal life stories, so that we could learn from their mistakes. I also learned that our attitudes are reflected on those around us, and that a simple smile can completely change someone's attitude. :)

We had a field trip to a colonial museum. We learned about the history of Thanksgiving. I learned that various countries have different holidays to celebrate the harvest season. Although many people believe that Thanksgiving originated with the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving was celebrated in Europe previously. When Thanksgiving was first celebrated it was a day of praise where people would spend most of their time at church, and would either fast or eat limited amounts. Over time this tradition has changed tremendously.

Moon Rocks

During science class we were able to observe rocks from the moon. The moon rocks were very small, and they came in a disc. Six samples of moon rocks were included. We looked at the moon rocks under a microscope. I expected that the moon rocks would be mainly white, but I was incorrect. There was only one type of white rock included, it was called anorthosite. Most of the rocks were black, but there was one rock with an orange tinge.
When we had learned about the moon rocks we made a video call with a class in California. We taught the students about some of the basic moon facts. We were able to show the students live images of the moon rocks while we described information.
Our school had a harvest festival. At the harvest festival we had large telescopes that focused on the moon. We also had the moon rocks on display so that many people could observe them.

Module Math Letter

Dear Mom and Dad,
My class has just finished learning about module 1 in the textbook. In Module 1 we reviewed many subjects including the order of operations, bar and line graphs, and probability. Module 1 allowed us to re-enforce our knowledge about many basic subjects. During Module 1 we conducted many experiments so that we would have a firm understanding of various subjects.
The order of operations is a rule that allows us to organize complex math problems. When following the rules of the order of operations, this is the order in which you must solve the math problem, parenthesis – exponents – multiplication – division – addition – and subtraction. When you come across a math problem with either multiplication and division or addition and subtraction, it is important to solve the problem from left to right. We learned about the order of operations in class by evaluating various problems in the math textbook.
In the beginning of module 1 we learned about when to use a bar or line graph. It is important to use a bar graph when graphing data that can be divided into distinct categories. You have to use a line graph when the data changes over time. We learned about the different types of graphs by collecting and graphing information during class. We were also given a take home quiz where we had to find a graph, and analyze it. Knowing when to use a bar or line graph is very important.
Probability is a measurement used to predict the chance of something happening. There are two types of probability; theoretical, and experimental. Theoretical probability is the chance of something happening according to theory. Experimental probability is the chance of something happening according to your experiment. We learned about these subjects by finding the experimental and theoretical probability of many experiments, including flipping coins, tossing dice, and spinning a spinner. We used data tables to show our information.
Thank you for taking the time to read about what I have been learning about in math class!
Thanks Again,
LRAS

Storms Set Sail
Sailing along peaceful oceans
Sky's turn grey
Ocean waves crash upon us
All control is lost
We crash into deep ocean rocks
Trying to survive
Waiting...Waiting
Help Arrives
Brought Ashore
Safe at last

Frozen
Working for hours
Trying to dislodge the trolley
The air was raw
Everything felt frozen
Snow had come
It was our job to get rid of it
I looked around
Realized how much we still had left to shovel
Continually thinking of the hot tea
I would receive when the work was done
I was freezing
Finally warm again

Distances in Space

It is very important to scientist to be able to comprehend the distances between planets and other space objects, but the distances that we use on earth are very hard to use in space. For example, the earth is located 93,000,000 miles away from Earth! Can you imagine trying to measure the distance between the Sun and Neptune! Scientist developed a measurement called an Astronomical Unit (AU) to help the with this problem. An AU is 93 million miles, the distance from the Earth to the Sun. Astronomical Units are used to measure the distances between our planets and other things in our Solar System.
Light is the fastest thing that we know of, making it vitally important. Light travels at 186,000 miles per second. Scientist thought that the amount of time that light travels in a year (Light Year) would be a good measurement that could be used for measuring distances between stars. For example, the Sun is 8 1/3 light minutes away from us, because it takes 8 1/3 minutes for the Sun's light to reach us. The development of light years has become an important part of the study of space.
Our Solar System consists of the sun and eight other planets. Most of the planets are widespread, except for the first four planets. Mercury, the closets planet to the sun, is located only .4 AU's (Astronomical Units) away from the sun. Mars is located at 1.6 AU's away from the sun. Venus and Earth are stuck between these two planets. After the first four planets the second planet is Jupiter, located 5.8 AU's away. Neptune is the farthest planet located 30.1 AU's away.
