My 5th Grade Essay
Your 5th grade year will be one of the best of your life. You will face many challenges, but also have many favorite moments from this year. The things your teachers expect out of you will be somewhat difficult. 5th grade will give you opportunities to be social and communicate. You will also need some survival skills in order to make it through the year. All of these things will be covered in my essay.
Wow, 5th Grade sure has been a great year! I had a great time! I was student council president and was able to make decisions and be a leader, two things I have always wanted to do. I also had the pleasure of doing the simple machines project with my friend Daniel. That was such a great way to use our visual thinking skills. But, of everything, I think the most pleasurable moment of the year for me was when I broke the triple jump record. I had wanted that for the entire year and finally achieved it on May 12, 2010! I think the thing that gave me the most motivation to break the record was the moment when I saw my dad in the stands right before I jumped. I am so glad of everything that happened this year.
In 5th grade, you will be expected to do a lot of things in the classroom. Like, all the teachers expect you to be listening in their classes. You are also expected to be responsible for your materials in class. But, to me the most important expectation of all the teachers is that your work should be done. So, for all you soon to be 5th graders out there, remember these classroom expectations because, trust me… you’ll need to know them next year.
Next year, you are to face many challenges. But, the thing is, these challenges are things that you are really going to enjoy. For example, this year one of the hardest challenges for me was thinking of things to write down for my R.T.I lit. roles. Another example of a challenge I faced this year was having to make up work from when I was in outside activities like Peace Patrol. But, to me the most difficult challenge this year for me was the PROJECTS. They were fun but, man they took some serious effort. So, I guess to sum it all up I conclude that, even though I faced many challenges this year, they were fun and they taught me life lessons I’ll never forget.
Okay, let me tell you something. 5th Grade is hard! The 4th Graders aren’t going to know what hit them on the first day of school. So, for all you 4th graders out there, here are a few tips on how to survive 5th grade. 1) Make sure you get on Mr. McCartney’s good side. 2) If you are in any outside activities, make sure you make up what you missed. 3) Stay out of trouble. 4) Expect projects just about every week. And 5) Get your work done! Well , that’s about it. All you have to remember is that, while it is fun, it is challenging. Make sure that you enjoy it while you can.
This year I was really able to interact with people and make some new friends. Some examples of how I did that are said below. One way I was able to was, by choosing to be partners for projects with people that I really didn’t know that well. Another way I was able to do that was through Skyping TM with other classes around the globe. A final way I was able to do that was by just talking to people that I didn’t know that well and finding a little bit about them. I really enjoyed the social opportunities I was given in 5th grade.
Before I go there is something that I have got to say. My teacher Mr. McCartney has taught me so much about life this year. Everything he has said is worth noting but, to me the most important thing he has said that has helped me the most is his famous line, “Figure it out.” I ask you to think about that for just a moment. That one simple phrase has helped me so much. It makes you wonder and really rethink whatever you have done. So, to you Mr. McCartney I thank you so much for your line that appears most often, “figure it out.”
Well, I guess you now know that 5th grade will be quite a year. You know that, although you will face many challenges this coming year, you will also have many favorite moments. You understand that your teachers will expect a lot out of you in the classroom, and that you will get to be a very social person this year. You also have a few survival tips under your belt. So, all in all, you know that 5th grade will be a year you’ll never forget.
Sincerely,
ED

I sit here after the game
My head all full of shame
Because of me we lost
I don’t think I can bear to see the boss
One shot! One shot!
All we needed was one shot
All I see is an awestruck team
This is like a bad dream
The game was great
Definitely one to date
Before this was a locker room
But now it’s just a room full of doom

I'm sorry to say that the 2010 Winter OLympics come to a closing today. In this article I am going to remember the moments that made the Vancouver Games so great.
*Apolo Anton Ohno becomes the most decorated U.S. Olympian
*Evan Lysacek pulls off a great upset in men's figure skating
*Lindsey Vohn finally wins a gold medal
*Shaun White performs (as always) amazing.
*Steve Holcomb and company win the gold in 4- man bobsled
*The USA vs. Canada hockey game ends with an exciting goal in OT by Sidney Crosby (USA though sadly lost)
All I can conclude from the games are great moments and an occasion that brought the world together. I can't wait for the next winter games in Sochi, Russia.

Am I the only person who is shocked that Shani Davis got silver instead of gold in Men's 1500 meter Speed Skating? I really thought he would win gold by a landslide. It doesn't matter though because Shani is still a great athlete.
Leave me a comment and tell what you think of Davis's silver.

Act II, Scene 7 from As You Like It by William Shakespeare (1600)
Blow, blow, thou winter wind.
Thou art not so unkind
As man’s ingratitude;
Thy tooth is not so keen,
Because thou art not seen,
Although thy breath be rude.
Heigh-ho! sing, heigh-ho! unto the green holly:
Most friendship is feigning, most loving mere folly:
Then, heigh-ho, the holly!
This life is most jolly.
Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky,
That dost not bite so nigh
As benefits forgot:
Though thou the waters warp,
Thy sting is not so sharp
As friend remember’d not.
Heigh-ho! sing, &c.

Olympia
You’ll never know how it feels to see your mother die until you experience it firsthand. I, at 11 years old, saw my mother cripple to the coldhearted beast that is called Breast Cancer.
Jodie VanCameron had been a great person. She taught 4th Grade for 18 years… and then she was diagnosed. A tragic 3 months, all before an overdose of Chemo-Therapy that took away her life.
I looked down at her and saw a part of me. A part of me lying on her deathbed, saying her last words.
“Matthew, I want you to make a purpose of yourself” she choked out. “I want you to win the Olympics for me.
I looked at her and cried “I promise you that I will win the Gold Medal in SpeedSkating. Matthew VanCameron will be a living legend.” I couldn’t help myself, I cried with enough force to fill a river.
The last seconds of my mother’s life were spent getting a kiss from my dad and the peacefully drifting away.
4 Years Later
I, Matthew VanCameron, have been living a tough life so far. Seeing my mother die and having my best friend move away at 15.
Joey McMyers and I had been quite a dynamic duo for 15 years. Teammates, next-door neighbors, and best friends. We were the kings of Milwaukee (our hometown), but unfortunately one king was moving to Alberta, Canada on his dad’s job transfer.
I had been dreading this day for months. Yet, I found myself smiling, the kind of smile you show when you don’t want to cry. Only I could see myself the way I actually was, miserable.
Joey walked up to me and put a hand on my shoulder. “Don’t worry Matt, this won’t be the last time we see each other” he said sympathetically.
“What do you mean?” I asked with a slight feeling the misery might be going away. “I’m talking about the Olympics dude” Joey called “We’re both going to be playing for our countries, you’ll be with USA and I’ll” he paused. “Be playing for Canada. In SpeedSkating, our sport.”
With that said Joey’s dad gave him the famous “we’ve gotta go” look. I watched Joey trudge to his family’s SUV(with a U-HAUL attached to it) like a beaver swimming upstream. The truck started and the McMyers family was on their way to the land of the Maple Leaf.
Interlude
At first Matthew wouldn’t even compete because Joey wasn’t a part of this Speed Skating relay. But, he gradually came back to his team.
Over time he began to dedicate all the time that he wasn’t in school, doing laps at the Rec Center’s rink. He found himself sneaking out of his house at 3 a.m. to go skate and think about his past.
By his senior year, Matthews had already accepted a scholarship to the University of Michigan with the intent that he would definitely be skating for the U.S. Olympic Team. The following year he had to compete in the Olympics. If he didn’t, he would be breaking his promise to his mom and would not get to see Joey McMyers ever again.
Days started turning into weeks and the next thing Matthew knew was that it was February 15, 2010…and he was on the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Team.
Mathew Van Cameron sat in the locker-room for USA praying. He prayed to God asking for strength... and for an Olympic miracle.
Joey McMyers was the 2010 Winter Olympics’ “Hot Topic.” Everyone believed that he would win the race and Canada would take home the gold. Mathew was a mere underdog.
As Matthew finished his prayers, he sat on the bench reflecting. He should be happy that Joey was back in the races with him, but he wasn’t. He should have thought that it was what his mother had always wanted, but he didn’t. He felt a feeling that tasted like vinegar when you said it…jealous. If Matt truly wanted to win the race, God would let him. At least, that’s what he hoped for.
The time for reflecting was over, he had to get home and rest up for the big race.
February 15, 2010
I woke up this morning. And looked in the mirror. The funny thing though is that I didn’t see my own reflection. I saw a person that is a part of me, my mother…I saw a sign that there was a chance that I could win today.
Last night I had a lot of thinking time on my hands. I found out what I am and found out what I am working for. When you come down to it, speed skating is all that I have. If I can’t reach my goal of winning the gold. I am nothing. I have nothing. The final living part of my mother is gone if I can’t reach my goal. This race is not an if, it's a matter of when.
As I was walking toward the U.S. locker-room, I had an Olympic moment. I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t. I bumped into a competitor, my best friend, Joey McMyers.
Joey and I gave each other a greeting that most 25 year old men give each other, a friendly hug. “Hey Matt, how you been?” Joey said with a huge smile.“Great, I said in a state of shock. It took me a few seconds to gain my bearings, but soon enough I said, “Why don’t we go to the USA locker-room and catch up on things!” I cried joyously. Joey agreed so we set off.
Joey had changed so much since I last saw him ten year’s ago. He had grown a beard and now looked more like John Lennon then the sandy haired kid I remembered from the past. Joey had also gotten to his full height(he had just started his growth support when he moved).
As we got into the locker-room Joey said,“Can you believe how much they are talking about me on TV, I don’t understand why you haven’t gotten any good publicity, you always were the better skater.“I don’t know either," I wondered. I think it’s because you have put your name out there a little bit more often. I just don’t talk that much to the press because I'm afraid that they’ll put a story out there about my mother’s death.”
With that said, a conversation was triggered. We talked about how they had gone through life after Joey’s moving to Alberta. I also found out that Joey was married and had a three year old daughter. Mathew was still single. After a while, the topic Matthew had been dreading I had been dreading came up.“I can’t beehive we both got here just like we promised each other.” He declared."just like you promised our mom.” There was then a moment of awkward silence that lasted almost thirty seconds. Though it seemed like an hour to me.
“Matt I know about the promise you made to your mom, you know before she passed he repeated. That caught me off guard because it suddenly dawned on me that Joey was there the night my mom died.
“Look, I think that to honor your mother we should decide that we should both try to get the gold or the silver medal in today’s race “Joey offered. I think it would be a great thing to do in her memory. “ I agreed. Now it was time to get in uniform and get ready to race.
The Race
I waited at the starting line, my heart throbbing and my bladder telling me I should have gone pee before I got on the ice. Joey gave me a quick High-5 before the starter gave us the signal it was time to race. “ON your marks” the starter bellowed.” Get set…GO”
I flew out of starting position like a plane shooting off of a runway. The wind was in my face as I crossed the first turn. I could see Joey out of the corner of my eye, we were neck and neck. Our battle for first place continued as we came upon the second turn. We were flying around the oval track like eagles in the open wind.
The race was happening so fast I didn’t even see Joey pull ahead by about 15 meters! I didn’t know what I was supposed to do, the finish line was coming up and I wasn’t keeping the promise I made to my mom.
I was only a football field away from the finish line. I could see Joey, and he was ready to win. He was traveling so fast that he was only 20 meters from the finish line!
15 meters! 10 meters! 8 meters! Joey was as close to winning as you can get to finishing when his heart gave way. He died instantly, never finishing the race. I won the gold but not with the feeling I wanted to feel. My heart was crushed yet again.
Epilogue
There was much controversy after Joey died in mid-race. The press had made their own versions of the story, none of them true. I, Matthew Van Cameron, am a six-time Gold medalist and father of a new Olympic Speed Skater. My daughter, Jodie VanCameron, is currently competing in the 2035 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. I am just about to watch Jodie compete at the new ice rink, the Joey McMyers Olympic Center.

I would like to give you a review on the movie Avatar, written and directed by James Cameron.
Avatar is a cutting-edge, action packed, futuristic, thriller which James Cameron gives to the world. Avatar is very much Oscar worthy. Cameron shows us a glimpse of the year 2154 by crafting a star studded storyline and showing amazing technological battles. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars.

I really need to tell you guys about these awesome games that I just downloaded on my Wii. They are Super Mario Brothers 3 and The Legend Of Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link. I got these games by buying Wii points cards and using my points to get these beastly games. Although they were originally made for the Nintendo, the Wii people have decided to let people buy them.
The first game I got was Super Mario Brothers 3 and I absolutely am obsessed with it. The second game I got was The Legend Of Zelda II: The Adventure Of Link and it is really hard, but so fun.
I just got into the second of nine worlds in Super Mario and I'll tell you if I get farther. I am just in the beginning stages of Zelda, but I can't wait to explore it more.
Have you ever played these games? Do you want to?
Mario and Link rock,

Hello readers of the world! I am back online to inform you about an awesome book that I am currently sinking my teeth into. It's called Heidi and the author is Johanna Spyri. Heidi is a high level book about a petite little girl who's parents died. After her parents died Heidi was taken in by her mothers sister, Detie. But when Detie gets a new job in Frankfurt, Germany, she has to give Heidi to her mysterious grandfather who lives in the mountains. This story takes place near a town called Dorfli somewhere in Switzerland by the way. So, when Heidi must go to live with her grandfather( more formally known as Uncle Alp) in the mountains, she knows she is in for adventure.
My favorite character is Uncle Alp in this book. I am going to take some time to talk about him. Uncle used to live in Domleschg were he had a son named Tobias( Heidi's father). Uncle's past shows that he was once a man who wanted nothing but to travel all over the place. He got into bad company and drank and gambled away his whole property. By now all Uncle had earned himself was a bad name. So, he disappeared to where no one knew and came back to Domleschg years later with a son. Rumor was that Uncle had joined the army in a town called Naples. But, when he returned no one wanted anything to do with him, so he moved to Dorfli. In Dorfli he was welcomed as a brother and was called Uncle. Then one day he moved up to the mountains and was called Uncle Alp.
Well, I don't want to spoil the book for you so I better stop. Happy Reading,
ED

The Day My Laptop Came Alive

The Day My Laptop Came Alive
I’m special. And I think you know why I’m special? I’m special because my class gets laptops. That’s right every single student gets their own personal laptop. This is great! Well, at first it was. But along came one day that broke the bond between my laptop and I. Only it was much worse. That day started a war. I remember that day. It was a Tuesday, a very normal Tuesday.
Tubby Wars
The on going war of a boy and his laptop.
Before I go on I think you should know that this is an account of what happened during the year of 2009-2010. And to make things clearer I want you to know that my computer’s name is Tubby.
That Tuesday, Tubby did something weird. When I was getting off the bus at the bus stop, my laptop bag started shaking. Like really shaking. Like imagine a crazed psychopath repeatedly banging it’s head on a steel table. That’s what my bag was shaking like.
Tubby kept shaking like that the whole way home. Eventually I got so mad that I chucked it halfway down the street. I don’t know why I did that. I guess my anger management just kicked in and I Iost control. I went over to the place I threw it to check out the damage.
Apparently, Tubby had fallen out of his bag when I threw him. He looked different. I almost didn’t recognize him. Then I saw the problem. Tubby had a face and showing me an evil smirk on it.
Before I could move a muscle Tubby jumped up from where he was smirking and ran away to the neighbor’s pool.
I was in such a state of shock that I barely knew what was going on! This whole process starting from when I threw Tubby to the present lasted about 3 seconds. I didn’t have a clue what was going to happen next.
So I just decided to walk back across the street to my house. I picked up my blue mountain backpack from the tar paved road and headed for my driveway.
But, just as I was walking up the front steps of my 2-story house, Tubby came back and struck my throat in the precise position that I was knocked out/
And you know where I woke up 3 weeks later?...
To be continued…

To me, the story of the 13 Colonies is one of the greatest things in Social Studies. The start of these colonies made a huge impact on the way I think. The people who went over to this unclaimed land had to have an immense amount of bravery and courage. These people are the ones that I think of as heroes.
But, unfortunately, I’m not writing this to tell you about the bravery or courage of these people. I’m here to tell you about how these colonies started.
The way the English Colonies started had a lot to do with people facing religious persecution and wanting to start a new life in a new place. The England king had started a Christian church that all people had to attend called the Church Of England. This new church didn’t agree with some people so they asked for a charter so they could start a colony in North America.
The king usually approved these charters so there were ships sent out with a couple hundred people to North America.
When these ships reached North America the people that came in them had to get started right away. Though before they got off the ship, most of the soon to be colonists selected leaders to run their new colony. The process of selecting these leaders was the start of self-government in the colonies.
Soon, the leaders sent out men to hunt and search for gold. They also started building homes and other buildings such as the meeting house.
The result of what happens next is different in each of the colonies. Some of the colonies had great soil for farming and others had rocky soil and made their money by fishing. So, it all matters on how and where the colonies were developed.
So, I really hope that today I have educated you on the start of the 13 Colonies and about how the colonists had an impact on me. I now ask you as a learner to keep reading and learning about the 13 colonies, because they are a great topic to study.
From one learner to another,
ED

I would like you to know that I have had a very successful unit on vertebrates. So, to show you what I have learned, I am writing a letter to you that tells you what I know.
I have learned a ton of information on fish. To start you of, I will tell you about jawless fish.
The jawless fish have a body structure that makes them look like an underwater snake. They have a mouth that’s round and is like a suction sup. The jawless fish are parasites. The only current existing jawless fish is the lamprey.
The body structure of the bony fish includes a skeleton made of bone and fins, scales, and hard coverings over their gills. The bony fish are found in both salt and freshwater ecosystems. Some examples of bony fish are eels, cod, perch, herrings, salmon, minnows, and your common goldfish.
The body structure of the cartilage fish includes a skeleton made of cartilage. They also have jaws that can open and close. The cartilage fish eat other fish and have scales. Some examples of cartilage fish are sharks, rays, and skates.
Now, I will move into the wonderous vertebrate group called reptiles.
The reptilian groups have body structures that include dry scaly skin and two pairs of legs with five toes on each leg. Reptiles are more complex than amphibians. They have well developed lungs and three chambered hearts. The four main groups of reptiles are turtles, lizards, alligators, and snakes.
Amphibians are a very fascinating group of vertebrates. Their body structure includes moist skin and no means that they change in stages. Amphibians go through metamorphosis, which means they change in stages. As young, they live in water and as adults they have lungs and live on land. Adult amphibians have three chambered hearts. Some examples of amphibians are frogs, toads, and salamanders.
Next, I will move into birds. Birds have a body covering of feathers. They also have four chambered hearts. Most birds have wings used for flying. Birds build nests where they lay hard-shelled eggs. Birds live in various different climates. When the weather gets cold, many birds migrate to warmer climates. Some examples of birds are pigeons, owls, ducks, pheasants, penguins, and turkeys.
And finally, I will move into mammals. Mammals have the most complex organ system of all the animals. They have a body covering of hair and fur. The females also have special organs that produce milk to feed their young. Mammals have the most complex brains of all the animals too. Some mammals also lay eggs like the Duckbill Platypus. There are also some mammals called marsupials that have a pouch such as the Kangaroo. Some examples of mammals are bears, rats, horses, cows, and humans.
So thank you so much for educating me on the wonderful animal species called vertebrates.
Sincerely,
ED

If I Were The Teacher
If I were the teacher I could do whatever I wanted to do…
If I were the teacher I wouldn’t have to do any homework. If I were the teacher I could have ice cream for every meal. If I were the teacher I could make kids do all my work for me. If I were the teacher I could make kids do physical labor for no reason. If I were the teacher I could overrun Dick Cheney and take his spot in office. If I were the teacher I could beat Albert Einstein at Jeoperdy. If I were the teacher I could have my own show on TLC. If I were the teacher I could throw laptops out the window and blame it on Jamie Foxx(get it “Blame It”). If I were the teacher I could save the world from pollution…(naaaa that sounds like something a goody 2 shoes would do).
If I were the teacher I could rule the world…
But, I am not a teacher I’m just a lousy student.
