Counting on Grace The protagonist in the book Counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop would be Grace. Grace is a girl who used to go to school to read and teach the other kids in her class how to read because Grace and Arthur were the best readers in their class. Their teacher, Miss. Lesley, didn't want to lose their two best readers to the mill. Arthur had to go to the mill house because his father had died and he had to work in order to keep his family living were they did. Also Arthur couldn't just walk or say no to the mill because he had no choice but to work in the mill due to that the people who owned the mill also owned all the houses, stores, ect. But grace is having a hard time at the mill with Arthur being there too. She is having a hard time with Arthur being there because Arthur was reading one day in the mill and French Johnny caught Arthur reading a book and took the book. French Johnny doesn’t want people reading books in the mill. That was the main character of the book counting on Grace by Elizabeth Winthrop.
