Cockroach facts

One fact is that they eat fallen fruit and Decaying organic matter. It posses horns and is wingless. They hiss when disturbed or alarmed. They make the hissing sound by pushing out air through slits in the abdomen. They grow up to three inches. Female cockroaches dont lay eggs they give birth to live babies. They product as many as 60 nymphs

I dont know alot about cockroaches except that there are alot of them in new york. I would like to know how it is that cockroaches could live through a bombing. Thats ALL id like to know about cockroaches because i think they are disgusting and need to be extinct because theyre just gross. Also i wonder if they carry diseases.

I thought odyssey was fun we got to see some really cool stuff like tatoosh island and so cool beaches. At odyssey i went on the ozette hike which was nine miles the three miles on the beach was really hard because it was hard to walk on slippery rocks and seaweed and through deep sand. Plus we had an incident where one of our teachers was Saving the earth and humanity by picking up garbage... What a saint. Allin all it was a good experience and I had lots of fun!

We claimed that our snail would slide best on the table.
We have no evidence because the snail wouldn't crawl anywhere because he's a failure BUT when he DID move he seemed to be moving better on the table. Once again we cannot back up this claim though because he did not move very much. Inaccuracies was because he didn't move. Our experiment failed. But we did learn that snails will eat rice crispy cereal.

We are going to start learning about snails. I know that snails are little and slimy and have shells.... And that You can crush them easily. I know that snail eats stuff in gardens too. I wonder how fast snails can go and I wonder how snails have babies.

Weekday experiment to see if volcanic ash would help grow radish plants. We observed and saw that it did. The plant with six ml's of ash grew about three inches more then the one without ash on it. We did have one inaccuracy..... I accidentally knocked over a plant.... That one didn't grow very well. We did make a model volcano and tried to make a simulation of mount saint helens erupting but that didn't work out. Ash holds in Wat and we proved that because whenever we would go to water the plants they would still have water anthem from the previous day. Ash also encourages bacteria which actually helps the plants grow. We also learned that if you put more then four inches of ash on a plant you cam get sick. All in all this was a very fun experiment and we learned a lot.

Offspring from sexual reproduction have more diverse characteristics then asexual reproduction because, asexual means that you don't need a mate to reproduce in sexual reproduction you do need a mate.when you have something made from sexual reproduction it gets genes from both mom AND dad, unlike asexual reproduction when it's offspring just get one pair of genes from the "parent". This is why sexual reproduction produces more diversity because they get more genes more traits.

My conclusion on bacteria in our school

I conclude that the door handles in our school carry the most bacteria in our school. The are in which we swabbed the door handle there are several colonies. In one area there is a big rough edged blotch of bacteria, there's also another area that almost looks like it was spray-painted on. On inaccuracy we had was where we swabbed the gum under the tables there's is a spot of bacteria growing out of the z-shape we swabbed. I learned that bacteria can form perfectly rounded circles and that they can grow in different shapes. I wonder why on the door handles area the bacteria didn't all grow in the same size/ shape and color something to look into next time I guess!

What I learned about Mitotis and Meisosis

I learned that Mitotis refers to the division of cells and Meiosis refers to the division of gametes (reproductive cells). Their similarities are they both have cytokinesis (the division of the cytoplasm of a cell following the division of the nucleus) that occurs during telophase (the final stage of Meiosis). Both use spindle fibers to separate the chromatids from each other. Mitosis and Meisosis only occur in eukaryotic cells.
How do cells divide?
The 6,000 million letters of DNA code in your cells are coiled up as 46 bundles- chromosone. Before a cell can divide, it must unravel it's chromosone and copy all it's DNA, so that each new cell will het a complete copy.
The seven stages of Mitosis-
1. Interphase- this is the longest period of the cell splitting cycle. DNA replicates, the centrioles divide and protiens produced.
2. Prophase- During this stage the nucleus fades and chromatin turns into chromosomes. Each replicated chromosomes sacrifices two chromatids. Microtubules of cytoskeleton disassemble.
3. Pro-metaphase-the nucleus goes away and some of of the mitotic spindle fibers elongate.
4. Metaphase- Tension from the spindle fibers align the chromosomes to one plane at the cells center.
5. Anaphase- Spindle fibers shorten the kinetochores separate and the chromatids are pulled apart and begin moving.
6. Telophase- The "daughter" chromosomes arrive at the poles and the spindle fibers dissapear.
7. Cytokinesis- The spindle fibers not attached to the chromosomes begin breaking down until only some overlap is left. It is in this overlap that a ring cleaves the cell into two daughter cells. Microtubules then reorganize into a new cell shape so now the cell can make a new Mitosis cycle.

Jonna and I did an experiment on polyacrylate crystals. We wanted to see if they would grow in several different liquids. We tested to see if they would grow in H2O, H2O with salt, H2O with yeast, carbonated water and orange juice.
A- Ask a question. What liquid would produce the best reults for the polyacrylate crystals.
E- Evidence. WHen we measured the Crystals some were bigger than others proving that not all liquids produce the same results.
I- Inaccuracy. Some of the Polyacrylate crystals cracked making it somewhat harder to measure their size. Also our first experiment was accidently knocked over by someone to remain unnamed.
O- Observations. We saw that the Polyacrylate crystals grew better in sugar water and carbonated water. While they still produced results in yeast water and orange juice they still only grew a bit.
U- Understanding. We understnad that orbees are not living, and that even though they are not living they still need the proper enviorment to be at its optimum best.
Y- Why? I wonder if the amount of light affected the size of the orbees. I also wonder if the tempature affected how big the orbees got.

If the conditions in an environment aren't right then it could affect organisms. For example if an environment is too dry and someone puts a plant that requires alot of water in that environment then that plant will most likely wither up and die. Another example is if you put a plant that needs little water and dry conditions in the rainforest then that environment will affect the organism because too much water will drown the Plant. It's like putting a fish out of water; it won't survive it will die because water is it's natural environment.
In our science class mr.g had us identify whether or not the substances in the vials were living or not. Some substances like what we discovered were brine shrimp at a first glance appeared non living because they hadn't hatched yet. They looked like tiny copper balls. They didn't seem to be living. They appeared that way because they weren't moving (at first) and they weren't hatching plus they were too small to see. Under a microscope we discovered that some of them were moving and were hatching. So we Concluded that just because they didn't look like they were living didn't mean that they weren't secretly alive.

Mr.G asked us if this was living or not. We decided judging from this picture that it was living because of the fact that it looks like they're hatching. We also saw them move. Before we looked at them under a microscope they just looked like tiny little things floating around in the liquid, then we looked at them closer. We think there living what do you think? Living or Not?

Yes, I think global warming can be stopped, but not entirely fixed. I think we need to be smarter in how we do and use things and I think we need to be more effecient. If we keep going down this road I believe our state will be greatly effected especially the coast because if global warming keeps on going then the icebergs will melt causing sea levels to rise which WILL most definetly cause flooding in washington and other states. I think one of the primary problems we need to fix is the problem of cars polluting the air. If we could find some way of using natural substances that will NOT pollute the earth then that would greatly help stop pollution. I certainly do not believe this is just a phase the earth is going through or that we are not causing global warming because we are and if we dont admit we are the problem then we will never fix global warming!
