ME -- Vowels / Voyelles

Article posted April 9, 2010 at 04:14 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 3113

Our class created some poems about the color of vowels. This idea was based on Kenneth Koch's interpretation of Arthur Rimbaud's poem "Voyelles". It was a fun, creative opportunity for our class. Please click on the assignment to the left and read our poems. Here is mine:

O, white steam stealing wrinkles from my shirt, and the flavor of candy.

A is the blue in a baby's eye when they laugh, and the smell of a January morning.

E, green grass growing from the ground in my garden, and an alligators armor, and what has come to pass, but not experienced.

I, forgettable in its simplistic style. Lost in the vibrant world but comforting like a spring day.

U, misunderstood and sad, wanting to be jovial and free. Dull in its own brilliant way.

Here is the original poem by Rimbaud:

Article posted April 9, 2010 at 04:41 PM GMT0 • comment (1) • Reads 485

A is the color of blue tears running down the side of my face.

E is green like a leaf or parsley in your chicken soup.

I is like a juicy orange or a cheetah running through the jungle.

O is like the yellow of the sun or the color of peace.

U is red like a rose or as red as a ruby.

Nina -- vowels poem

Article posted April 9, 2010 at 04:40 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 510

A is blue, like the sky on a clear day, or a bluebird chirping in the tree by the forever rolling waves of the ocean. Maybe it is the glittering scales of a fish while it swims in the clear blue water. A could be the blue in the future, that we don't know that is yet to be discovered.

E is orange, orange like a juicy orange on a hot summer day. Or maybe orange is the fire that we set on the campfire to roast marshmallows. Orange could be an unfinished thought that is in the mind of a slow walking tiger.

I is yellow. Yellow like the sun on a spring day. yellow is happiness that only you can know. Yellow can be the color of the old torn pages of a book that is passed on for all generations. Yellow is the nice sand on a relaxing beach.

O is green. Green like the leaves of a tree of the color of an unfound planet. Green is the open freedom and happiness that you find in the open fields of grass.

U is rainbow. An opening array of possibilities, a nice colorful surprise after it rains. Rainbow is whatever YOU want it to be. Rainbow is your choice of open possibilities yet to be found.

A is yellow like the Simpson's skin color and the sun at sunset.

E is green like a sign for a missing dog, or snot running down your nose in Winter.

I is red like the fresh blood of an open wound, or a fresh cut.

O is purple like Barney the big, fat, dragon.

U is white like an unpainted wall after moving out, or an unwritten paper of a struggling student working hard to finish a test.

Emily -- Vowel Poem

Article posted April 9, 2010 at 04:37 PM GMT0 • comment • Reads 640

A is golden like the sun's rays, a sunflower at dawn and the color of the sky at sunset.

E is silver like when the sun hides behind the moon in an eclipse, a word of thanks and the constellation " Great Bear".

I is green like the enviroment, the peacefulness of Earth, a four leaf clover that brings good luck, and the grass.

O is lavender like my marker, a violet in a vase and the gentle tone my mom uses when I hurt myself.

U is blue like my favorite shirt, the sky at early dawn and a bubble trapped in my cereal bowl.

Y is rainbow like a bubble + the sun and a multi-colored marker.
