First Day of 2013 School Year In New Zealand on PhotoPeach
The secret of good teaching is to regard the children's intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, to grow under the heat of flaming imagination. Our aim therefore is not merely to make the children understand, and still less to force them to memorize, but so to touch their imagination as to enthuse them to their innermost core...

Montessori
Montessori at Malfroy School has two classes where the programme is based on the philosophy and methodology of Dr. Maria Montessori. Learning is child-centred and child-directed, based on the child's interests and needs. Room 13 is for 9-12year old students and Room 14 is for students aged 5-8years. To observe either of these classrooms, please contact the Rotorua MontessoriTrust through rotoruamontessori@gmail.com. They will answer any questions you may have and arrange an appointment to observe the classes.
You can learn more about Montessori education, especially in New Zealand on the website at www.montessori.org.nz. If you would like further information about Montessori at Malfroy, feel free to collect an information pack from the school office.

Thank you to all the parents and the grandparents that came with us on our lovely walk to Rotorua Immediate School to go to the Fonterra Science Road Show. There we enjoyed many demonstrations that made us think. Then we had a chance to walk around and play on many different types of science experiments and displays. It was a morning of discovery for all of us that we soon won't forget.

We had a wonderful Thursday with Year 1 & Year 2 children working in the garden and preparing veggies for the story "Stone Soup" whilst our Year 3 & Year 4 had Athletics Day with the rest of Malfroy. That same day in the afternoon when all the class was back together, we invited Ms. Deer's class to join us for our story. We had so much left over in veggies after the story, I froze them to use on another soup Friday. We invited all family and friends to come on Friday and share with us. We will be having cooking activities with the children on Thursdays to be shared on Friday morning to which we invite all family and friends to join us starting around 8:30 to 9:00. This is an activity we have during the chillier months of the year. Please come in and enjoy the community atmosphere.

The Junior Class did the First Great Lesson in our Montessori Curriculum...The Story of Creation. We presented our program to the Junior Classes at Malfroy and others that wanted to attend. The children worked very hard and were very nervous, but they did it and they did it well. Everyone was involved in the performance and enjoyed all the compliments the other children gave them after it was over.
The First Great Lesson weaves a tale of the origins of the universe and our own planent. Using impressionistic charts and experiments directly related to the basic physical properties of matter a foundation is made for the future study of physics, chemistry, astronomy and geology.

About the Blogger
I hold a Master's in Montessori and have been working in Montessori on many levels both in New Zealand and in the United States for over twenty-seven years. One of my greatest joys is working with children in the prepared environments and watching the lightbulbs go off when they grasped a concept for the first time. I know with the thousands of children and adults that I've worked with over the years, that our future will be in good hands with their many skillls and gifts they will bring to the world.
