Learning to use Maori units of measurement. on PhotoPeach
Today Room 2 began our learning about measurement. We talked about how measurement was all about finding out how long or short things were. We talked about what we could use to measure things with.
We learnt a Maori song which taught us the names of our different fingers on our hands. A long time ago Maori used their thumbs and their bodies to measure things with. We used the same units of measurement to measure different things in our playground. We each worked with a buddy and took it in turns to measure and record the different things we wanted to measure.

Where did Term 1 go? Welcome to Term 2 and I hope you have all had a lovely break and had some wonderful family time together.
This term we are continuing our topic learning on Connections by looking at Structures. We will be learning about the structures that hold up our bodies as well as buildings around us. We will be making models, murals and anything else that our learning directs us to.
If you look to the left of this blog page, you will see a list of links. These are links to sites that we visited in our ICT time in Term 1. I will be adding new sites each week as we use them. By using the online activities at home, your children will be able to consolidate their school learning.
I hope you enjoy sharing your childrens learning journey and thank you for your continuing support.

Year One Rotorua Walk on PhotoPeach
Towards the end of Term 1, all the children in Year 1 went on a walk around our beautiful city. We went to the Lake Front in a coach which for most of us was the most exciting part of the trip as we had never been on a coach before.
We saw the Lakeland Queen on the lake, as well as the float planes and helicopters that take people around the whole area on sight seeing flights. We saw the church that Mrs. McGrath got married in as well as the scout hut where she had her party afterwards! We saw the gondolas, the Te Arawa waka and Pizza Hut.
It was a lovely, sunny day so we had a picnic for morning tea, followed by a play on the Volcanic Playground.
We then had a very long walk to Kuirau Park. On the way we saw hotels, restaurants, shops, a school, the hospital and other places that we had been to. We had to cross a very busy road to get to the park. We were very lucky to have so many wonderful parents and helpers to keep us safe.
At Kuirau Park we saw bubbling, boiling mud and hot pools. We knew that we had to stay behind the barriers to keep safe. After walking through the park we had a play on the playground before walking across the field to the Aquatic Centre. We were very lucky because there was a spectacular air show right above us and we saw the planes making smoke trails, diving, stalling, rolling and flying in formation. We even saw two of the planes making a love heart shape in the sky with the smoke!
The air show finished just in time for us to catch the bus back to school. We were exhausted, as were all the grown-ups!

Room Two's First Fun Friday of 20013 on PhotoPeach
Room Two's favourite day of the week is Fun Friday. It's our special time together when we can learn new skills and try different things. We learn about sharing, working with other children, persisting, extending existing skills and lots of other things too.
We can choose activities that extend our classroom learning in the different curriculum areas or just try something fun. We love it!

Learning About Patterns on PhotoPeach
The children in Room Two have been learning all about patterns. We have learnt that a pattern is something that repeats itself over and over again. Patterns can be made with colours, shapes, pictures, anything!
We made patterns using coloured unifix cubes. We could nearly all make a pattern using two different coloured cubes. A lot of us could make a pattern using three different colours and a few of us could even make patterns using four! We loved this activity!
