Sir Edmund Hillary
Sir Edmund Hillary was a famous New Zealander. He was the first person to climb to the summit of Mt Everest the tallest mountain in the world.
Hillary was born in Auckland in 1919, his home town was Tuakau. He liked skiing and the outdoors, he was a strong boy.
Career - Achievements
Hilary joined the R.N.Z air force. He nearly died and was sent home to recover; he took up beekeeping with his father. A few years later he decided to climb Mt Everest he was the lucky one out of thousands of men who volunteered to climb the tallest mountain in the world. He and Tenzing Norkay were the lucky two. It took 7 weeks to get up at 11:30 on May 29th 1953. They made it to the top but they could not wait to celebrate because they were running out of oxygen. It took 3 days to get safely back down the mountain.
A few days after Hillary was honoured by Queen Elizabeth that is how he got the ‘Sir’ in front of his name, he also got a knighthood. He kept going back to Nepal to help build things.
Hillary had a wife Lady Louise Hillary and a daughter Belinda Hillary they both died when the train crashed, Hillary was devastated.
Hillary went to help the Nepalese build schools, clinics, bridges and an airfield. He died in May 2008
Sir Edmund Hilary was famous and concerned about things that other people had never before.
