Christmas, New Years, Hanukkah, Eid al-Adha Kwanza, Boxing Day...it is the holiday season.
What are traditions that your family enjoys during the holiday season? Share them in a comment. If they have an origin, when and where the tradition came from, share it.
Go to other blogs and share this idea. Let's see if we can learn traditions from other countries. Good luck!

How good is the Osprey's eye sight?
How big of a fish can they carry?
How sharpe are their talons (claws?)
Here is a link to the website this is from. There is a lot of cool information on animals on it. Check it out and let me know what video we should share next. http://www.arkive.org/

After our class discussion yesterday we were left wondering what choices do Americans really have?
I have attempted to find a link to each party to provide some basic background information on the parties.

This is in Texas, I wonder...
Do we have examples of erosion in Minnesota?
Do we have weathering in Minnesota?
Do we have deposition happening in Minnesota?
Find example in our community or places that you have been and share them in a comment. If you have picture try to add them.

Today we will be learning to connect our reading with new learning. The goal is to activate our current knowledge on the topic with new information. We will also discuss MISCONCEPTIONS, information we thought was right, but then learned that it was wrong. How will we know for sure which information is right?

1. Find an item that you think has some historical value.
2. Find out everything you can about it and bring your item into school by Tuesday, April 17th.
3. Write a description of your item that is less than 500 words.
4. Take a digital picture of it (at home or school)
We will have our own contest in class, then anyone that wants to submit theirs for the real contest will be given an envelope and we will mail them in. Their deadline mailing is May 1st.

February is I Love To Read month at our school. As a class that is working to be leaders and role models in our building it was awesome to have one of our students (RA) step up and ask if our class could be guest readers in other rooms. So far we have 5 opportunities to read to other classes in our building.
RA, great service idea! I am hoping we can get some video of our leaders reading to other classes to post here!

The Declaration of Independence
Women's Rights
Paul Revere's Ride
Taxes
The French and Indian War
The Battle of Bunker Hill
Check back next week to see video clips of each topic.

Watch these short clips that focus around the questions that we developed yesterday. As you watch continue to develop questions, write them on sticky notes and add them to the groupings that I created from our original questions.
And most of all...have fun thinking and wondering about our countries beginning!
The Taxman Cometh!(4 min)
Colonial American Women's Rights (2:17 min)
The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere-Audio (5:20)
this also connects to the question someone asked about why some people are not written into the history books. Some books talk about William Dawes and Samual Prescott that rode with Paul Revere, but they are not mention in Henry Wadworth's poem. Why might that be?

Do you have 18 minutes to reflect? Think about Martin Luther King Jr.'s words and "Dream" about what we can do today to make our classroom a better place. Leadership in our room will ripple out to our families, community and effect the world.
The only thing we have to do
Is put it in our mind
Surely things will work out
They do it every time
The world won't get no better
If we just let it be, na, na, na
The world won't get no better
We gotta change it, yeah
Just you and me
It's the god hour
The morning I wake up
Just for the breath of life I thank my maker
My mom say I come from hustlers and shakers
My mom built it on skyscrapers and acres
He said take us back to where we belong
I try to write a song
As sweet as these arms the one the type to bare arms
And wear my heart on my sleeve
Even when I fell in God I believe
Read the days that weave through the maze
The seasons so amazing
Feed them and raised them
Seasons are aging
Earthquakes, wars, and rumors
I want us to get by but
We're more than consumers
We more than shooters, more than looters
Created in this image so God live through us
And even in this generation, living through computers
Only love love love can reboot u
Wake up, everybody
Wake up, everybody
Need a little help, y'all
Yes I do, need a little help
Need a little help, y'all ay
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody

SERIOUSLY? Noone has an opinion on this? I am ready to start the new year with some good discusion and noone has an opinion. Frustrating.
As I watched this video this morning I couldn't help reflecting on topics, people and events that we discuss on a daily basis.
I am grateful that in the end of this video 3 out of 5 repair shops are honest, but is 2 out of 5 an okay proportion? What are the percentages for these numbers?
This is a repair shop, I am challenged in my thoughts...is this too small of a sample? Would these numbers be the same in any industry? What do you think?
In a comment, leave your thoughts or opinions about the video. If you do some research into honor and honesty in other industries share what you learned and leave the site you found your information.

The soil experiment that we are doing is listed two articles down. We are also looking for cool landforms in the colonies to research so if you know of some please share them in a comment.
Thanks,

We are researching the Colonial regions and also soil content.
This is the experiment we are doing. We would like you to do it too and then share your results with us either in a comment, by Skype or any other way you would like.
We will be posting our results on the map we are colonial map we are creating. If other states want to participate feel free to share your results too.
Here is the experiment. Have fun!
Experiment:
Purpose: To examine and compare soil composition (content of each of the different particle sizes). Learn to differentiate between clay, silt, sand, and gravel. Discuss the properties of soils according to its composition.
Material:
Two samples of soil from different locations
Water
Two medium size empty transparent plastic bottles (around 13 to 20 fl oz, or 350 to 600ml)
Paper
Transparent tape
Pen, crayon or marker
Procedure:
1. Pour the soil from the first sample and water into the first bottle: one part of soil, two parts of water.
2. Close the bottle well.
3. Shake the bottle for 3 minutes (make sure the soil mixes well with the water)
4. Let settle.
5. Write “Soil Composition: Sample 1”, date, and time of the day on the tag and paste it to the bottle with the tape.
6. Repeat the steps with the second sample and the second bottle. Write “Soil Composition: Sample 2”, date, and time of the day on the tag.
7. Let both bottles settle for thirty minutes. Describe the composition of each soil and try to explain the differences.
8. Describe the composition of each soil and try to explain the differences
Results: After thirty minutes, the gravel, sand and silt would have settled on the bottom of the bottle making layers that appear in this order bottom-up (see Soil Chart). The water will still look brownish. That is because the finest particles of soil, the clay, are so light that it will take those about 24 hours to completely settle down. On the surface of the water, organic detritus (decaying organic matter: pieces of twigs, leaves, dead insects, etc.) is floating.
Why: In water, particles settle more quickly the bigger they are. It is possible to use this property to determine the amount of each component of the soil. Gravel and sand will settle after 40 seconds; silt will take 30 minutes, and clay will settle after one hour. You can use these time frames to measure the thickness of each layer and determine how much (%) of each particle is in your soil sample. You can also apply this technique to evaluate the composition of the soil for a potted plant, and correct it. Example: if water doesn't drain well, would more sand help? If it needs to hold water longer would clay or organic matter be helpful?
Make a drawing of your results measuring the thickness of each layer then labeling each layer of your diagram with the proper measurement.
After gathering all of our samples from Owatonna we will compare our results. If we are successful with finding Colonial states to participate we will compare their results with ours and also with what we learn from our research.

A reasonable amount of property shall be exempt from seizure or sale for the payment of any debt or liability. The amount of such exemption shall be determined by law. Provided, however, that all property so exempted shall be liable to seizure and sale for any debts incurred to any person for work done or materials furnished in the construction, repair or improvement of the same, and provided further, that such liability to seizure and sale shall also extend to all real property for any debt to any laborer or servant for labor or service performed.

Sec. 17. RELIGIOUS TESTS AND PROPERTY QUALIFICATIONS PROHIBITED. No religious test or amount of property shall be required as a qualification for any office of public trust in the state. No religious test or amount of property shall be required as a qualification of any voter at any election in this state; nor shall any person be rendered incompetent to give evidence in any court of law or equity in consequence of his opinion upon the subject of religion.

Earth Structure and Processes
Investigation Questions: Read the standard below. After reading, what questions would you ask yourself to help investigate this topic so you could truly learn about it?
STANDARD:
1. The surface of the Earth changes. Some changes are due to slow processes and some changes are due to rapid processes.
Explain how, over time, rocks weather and combine with organic matter to form soil.
Explain how slow processes, such as water erosion, and rapid processes, such as landslides and volcanic eruptions, form features of the Earth's surface.
I want to learn and then prove that we know this by developing a project together as a class. I think to do this we need to break down what it is asking and really figure out what to do.
Wednesday we will generate questions and post them.

The number that you have been given is the Habit that you will do some research on.
Habit 1: Be Proactive® • You're in Charge
Habit 2: Begin With the End in Mind® • Have a Plan
Habit 3: Put First Things First® • Work First, Then Play
Habit 4: Think Win-Win® • Everyone Can Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood® • Listen Before You Talk
Habit 6: Synergize® • Together Is Better

5C we are using our standards time today to play!
It is free play time. The only catch is that since we are doing research...
1. Before we play we need to come up with a few questions about the benefits of play that we want to collect information about. We should base them on the research we read.
2. At the end of our hour we need to document if we felt their was educational benefits to the play time. What things were learned and can we justify spending time playing?
We can then generate other questions we might want to research.
Like:
How much play time is a beneficial amount of time?
Are all parts of play time beneficial?
Are there times when play is not beneficial?

Do you have 18 minutes to reflect? Think about Martin Luther King Jr.'s words and "Dream" about what we can do today to make our classroom a better place. Leadership in our room will ripple out to our families, community and effect the world.
The only thing we have to do
Is put it in our mind
Surely things will work out
They do it every time
The world won't get no better
If we just let it be, na, na, na
The world won't get no better
We gotta change it, yeah
Just you and me
It's the god hour
The morning I wake up
Just for the breath of life I thank my maker
My mom say I come from hustlers and shakers
My mom built it on skyscrapers and acres
He said take us back to where we belong
I try to write a song
As sweet as these arms the one the type to bare arms
And wear my heart on my sleeve
Even when I fell in God I believe
Read the days that weave through the maze
The seasons so amazing
Feed them and raised them
Seasons are aging
Earthquakes, wars, and rumors
I want us to get by but
We're more than consumers
We more than shooters, more than looters
Created in this image so God live through us
And even in this generation, living through computers
Only love love love can reboot u
Wake up, everybody
Wake up, everybody
Need a little help, y'all
Yes I do, need a little help
Need a little help, y'all ay
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody
Wake up everybody

Class, next week we will be starting our unit on simple machines. At the end of the unit you will be responsible for creating a project based on simple machines. This video will provide some inspiration! After watching the video spend some time searching the internet to gain some knowledge about simple machines. Write down some things you find out and we will share them next week.
ideas:
1. Find the 6 simple machines
2. What is the benefit of a simple machine?
3. Name some example of everyday things we use that are simple machines.
4. Whatever else you find interesting.

After all the snow and getting stuck multiple times I have decided to buy a new vehicle, but I would like some input from you. Please comment on if I should buy it or not. Give me the pros and cons on why or why not.
No, I am not really going to buy it, but it makes for some fun thinking.

2. Comment on:

-Where could this be used in Owatonna or Minnesota?

Next week begins fair week and the tradition of school letters coming out letting everyone know who they have for teachers. Let us know what house and homeroom teacher you have.
Also, it is fair time, what is your favorite fair activity. Is it seeing everyone? Rides? Food? Or getting out of town so you don't get mobbed?
As always feel free to share what you have done this summer.

Hey blogging friends. We have just started our summer vacation! Share what you like to do during your time off. My class share any plans you have for the summer.
Your teacher will be coaching 3rd grade baseball, helping out with 6th grade baseball, traveling, reading and teaching summer school. I guess that about wraps it up.
Keep in touch over the summer!

A lot of excitement now and the weeks ahead!
Tuesday we spent some time sharing our poems with Mrs. McMurtry's class from Regina Saskatchewan, Canada. What a blast to visit and share poems. Her 4th grade class found poems they enjoyed and read them chorally to us with actions. How cool! We shared a handful of our student written poems. What a great experience.
We connected with Mrs. McMurtry's class through the Olympic Wiki Project that we did earlier this year.
It is a big week this week with, hopefully, our track meet today, depending on the weather. Then Thursday we will be Skyping with Rhode Island, NY and Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada to share poetry with both classes.
We are also starting two new projects. A social studies project on westward expansion in the US, and a science project on natural disasters. These projects will hit a lot of standards in several areas across the curriculum. These should provide a lot of investigation and excitement in learning.

Well, this journey has ended and it is time to move along. What a great experience this has been. It was amazing to hear Mr. Ryan Vernosh speak. After getting to know him a bit this weekend and hearing him speak on the spot, I know he inspired me and will do all of Minnesota proud!
I have met nine new colleagues through this process and have been inspired by each. As we all sat around talking and hanging out together on Saturday it was quiet obvious that we all knew many teachers in our districts that could have easily been in our shoes representing Minnesota. You as students and me as a teacher have a lot to be thankful for.
Signing off and looking forward to the next adventure to come along...I guess, now that I think of it, I know a few that I can get back to and a few to start. So, tomorrow is a new day and I know it will bring something special!

Well, as I stated yesterday, 25 people were wrapped around the room with me on the other end. As intimidating as this started out to be, it was an incredible experience. Just like eager students, each panelist was sincerely excited to hear the answers to the questions asked. How empowering it was to have so many adults intrigued with what I had to say. It is funny how as adults we have such similar anxieties as all other ages do.
It was cool as I slowly made eye contact with each person during the 30 minutes, that the stern, cold looks that I imagined coming into the interview was wiped away and replaced by a true image of curiosity and a desire to learn and understand. It is funny how we typically paint a negative picture of experiences before we have them. So often we are our own worst enemies. One more experience that reminds me that it is important to go into experiences with the right attitude and stay positive.
It really connects to the conversations that we have about being a good audience. I am guessing it was similar to our culture display presentations that each of you shared and your classmates had specific questions about you, just you and how special each of you are.
Well, now I sit and wait for the decision. Will I see you Monday or not? That is the question. No matter what happens, I can't wait to see each of you again!
Sincerely,
Mr. M

Well, the mixer last night is just what I needed. Being in a room with 15-20 new people is a bit overwhelming. It was good to have my wife by my side. It makes me thankful for our classroom where I know everyone.
Anyways, after the mixer I at least knew everyone. There are some amazing people here. It makes me even more aware of how humbling of an experience this is.
This morning I had a short video shoot. Similar to what I did last Friday where I went to interview several students of each of this years Owatonna nominees, except I was on the other side of the camera. I think it went okay. We just talked about the classroom, which I know about:)
I go to the interview at 2:30 today. Each of the 10 of us do this. The interview is for about 30 minutes and there are 25... yes, Twenty-five people asking questions. This might be a bit overwhelming. I guess, this will be the adventure part of it. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. That is all for now. I will try to update the blog tonight and let you know if I survived the interview.
Thanks for your comments and the card on Thursday. I have the card with me and have read it several times to gain courage for the interviews
Mr. M

Hey class,
I thought I would keep you up to date during this experience and if you have questions you can put them in the comments. This way I will have some kind of journal of the whole process.
So, it is 8:06 and you are all starting your day. I started mine by bring my boys down to Subway. I saw on the news they had free breakfast sandwiches this morning. I am now sitting at home and just about to leave. I didn't sleep much last night. I think I am a bit nervous. If there are breaks during the weekend of events I will check in an update you on what I have been doing. Feel free to let me know what you are doing too.
Have a super day today. Be super good for Ms. Boyd. I am off on my adventure!

Why did the delegates draft a new plan instead of revising the Articles of Confederation?
-The Articles were weak. They were only a firm league of friendship between states.
-They could not create or collect taxes
-Congress could not regulate trade with other counties
-All states had to agree to amend the articles
-9 out of 13 states had to agree to pass laws
-There was no executive branch to enforce laws
-There was no judicial branch to interpret laws
It was easier to change it completely by adding three branches of government.
What was the underlying reason that many states wanted the Bill of Rights to be part of the Constitution?
Excerpt taken from the scholastic link above.
Their major objection to the new Constitution was its lack of a bill of rights. "Bills of rights" list the specific freedoms that governments cannot threaten or take away. When the Constitution was being written, many state constitutions already had bills of rights. For that reason, the authors of the Constitution did not feel it was necessary to have another one. The antifederalists believed that without a list of personal freedoms, the new national government might abuse its powers. They worried that it would destroy the liberties won in the Revolution.

Class, what a blast it has been to read your poems and watch them take form with each new draft. It has been fun to see how each of your poems shine your own voice.
Read your classmates poems and share a comment about their strengths and weaknesses. Also note how the topics and content match the poet. It is fun to see what you can learn about the poet from their poems. Enjoy!

Hey Olympic watchers,
What has been your favorite moment, story, event, participant. or even commentator? Share it in a comment.
Some of my favorite moments:
Ohno's attitude towards his sport. I love how he has worked so hard, but even in disqualification he has a great perspective on his sport.
I am amazed at the type of sacrifice these athletes make to attain this level of competition.
I am looking forward to the Canada/U.S. hockey game. Canada got us in the womens hockey I hope we can return the favor.
I would love to hear favorites!

The Winter Olympics have finally arrived. The opening ceremony is always an exciting time. If you watched it please share your thoughts about it in a comment.
If you missed it, try searching for it, I am sure you will be able to find it somewhere. If I find it I will add it as a link.
Things you could share about:
1. What was your favorite moment and why?
2. Typically it is a moment where the host country and city has time to share some of it's history. Did you pick up on any of this and if so what did you learn.
3. Also in a ceremony like this there is a lot of symbolism involved. Look for pictures, symbols, phrases that represent themes or ideals that the Olympics stand for and share any that you picked up on.
4. Was there a person or country that stuck out to you? Share why.

All information taken from Saltwaterfish.com
The Mandarin Dragonet
These awesome looking fish are reef safe and love rock work. They hover around your rock work and are peaceful, social fish. The stunning markings and colors liven up any aquarium. They require moderate care because they need copepods for a food source
Damsel fishes provide an important link both as reef forage fishes and also excellent beginner marine aquarium specimens. Their extensive use is well-warranted considering their diversity, beauty and tolerance of chemical and physical conditions, gregariousness when crowded and general compatibility with fishes and invertebrates. Most damselfish species accept all types of food eagerly and are very disease resistant.
Damselfish are often used to break in or cycle a new aquarium. It is important to remember that even though these fish are hardy and can handle the adverse conditions of a new aquarium, they may become quite aggressive among themselves, and toward other tankmates. Most of these fish stay in small shoals in the wild when young, breaking away from the group as they grow, and eventually become solitary as adults. When dealing with several Damsels in one aquarium, plenty of rockwork and hiding places are necessary in order to keep quarrels to a minimum. The Chromis are a genus of Damsels that are schooling fish. They do well in an aquarium in groups of the same species.

Brain Coral - Glass Goblet
This beautiful and easy to keep coral will be a highlight to any reef.
Transparent tissue forms bubble like vesicles that can be found in a few color variations.
Xenia is a genus of soft marine coral with "arms" coming out from the top that end in many-fingered "hands". It is unique among corals because of its ability to use its "hands" to "pulse" or push water away from the colony in a constant, grabbing motion. It propagates well with marginal care and is very suitable for beginning reef aquarium hobbyists.
It is easy to see why the Xenia is a favorite of many marine reef keepers. This species propagates easily and is quite interesting and beautiful to watch.
The Halloween hermit is named for the striking black and orange stripes on its legs. It is a great scavenger. It is one of few crabs that will eat cyano bacteria (slime algae)

What does it take for someone to get involved with something? These days people are so incredibly busy that it is quite a process to make a decision to get involved with a new...whatever.
What types of activities, committees, blog topics suck you into them and give you the desire to comment or participate? Do you dare take the time to respond?

Hello class,
I never told you why I was gone today. I went up to St. Paul, to the capital building to meet face to face with our legislators to share with them my opinion about how our state's budget should be used.
I was literally participating in the rights our constitution has laid out for us. What we were studying last month. I spoke with Representative Kory Kath, who is a high school teacher from Owatonna. I also spoke to Patti Fritz, from Faribault, Dick Day from Owatonna, and Kevin Dahle from Northfield.
Our capital building is such an awesome building! Have any of you been there?

My parents say that kids don't need cellphones, so as you can guess I don't have one. I wish I did, but I don't. Here is the reason; my dad is a wood shop teacher in a junior high and is always having kids texting during class. Imagine how that goes! My mom is a sub for everywhere, I always see her at school. She is not going to let me have a cellphone until I am in 10th grade. Most of my friends have a cellphone.
Should we have them? I need reasons why! Please comment

Class,
It was so much fun to read your comments. You did a super job talking about the Federalists and Anti-Federalists. It is also fun to hear your voices and opinions come out. I am starting to notice people submitting comments back to others as well. I like how those that have done this have been extremely respectful of others' opinions. Great job! Keep it up.
I have noticed we still need to work on using capital "I's" and work on our spelling. I have been editing many of these. Once I learn how to make my own comments and send them back to you I will let you do your own editing. Things to practice: capitals, end punctuation and spelling. Hope to see more entries soon.
Once we receive our permission slips back for your own pages I will show you how to do that, then you can post your own work. I am PUMPED!!
