Left for Dead: My Journey Home from Everest by Beck Weathers
Beck fought off depression through the extreme sport of mountain climbing. Somewhere below the summit of Mount Everest’s 29,035 –foot summit a fellow climber left him for dead. This book deals with responsibility in several ways. First, Beck believes he is being a responsible father and husband because he meets his family’s material needs but eventually realizes he is neglecting them emotionally. Second, through Beck’s story of climbing Mount Everest, it is apparent that all members of a climbing group must be responsible for and depend on each other because of the harsh conditions and unpredictable weather. Finally, I wonder, did the climber that left Beck for dead have a responsibility to carry him to camp even though he knew that when climber is in a hypothermic coma, death is inevitable?
