Maui and the fingers of fire. Retold By Charlotte.

 

Maui was a man who  loved to trick, so they called him ‘Maui the trickster’.

 

One day Maui wondered if there was a god of fire and he said ‘Well there is only one way to find out’.

 

So he made his choice. He put out all the fires in the pa and that night the people went cold. When he was finshed it was almost morning and everyone in the pa wondered who had done this sort of thing.

 

So Maui finally stood up for himself and said , ’’ I did it. I’m the one that put out the fires in the pa’.’

The people were shocked in ANGER  and they  wanted to sentence him to 50 years in prison .

 

But one thing happened after that ‘You may think prison’ came a big boom like thunder. The voice  continued,” But there is one other thing you can do’

 

 Maui answered,’ What,  oh great leader, what can I do?’

 

“You can go see your ancestor, the goddess of fire’, he said back to him.

 The Boom like voice was the leader of the pa.

 

Maui went and found  the cave where his ancestor lived. It was red and covered with flames…

 

The fire Women/ ancestor was happy to see Maui but she got tricked by Maui because he said ‘Someone in the pa has put out all the fires. May I please have one of your fire fingers ?’

She said, ‘ oh of course you can Maui”, and so she did.

 

But Maui tricked her again by stamping on the finger and throwing it in the water.

 

So Maui returned and while he was on his way, he was thinking of another plan to trick his ancestor.

 

 Maui kept on doing it, until she  was down to her last fire finger. She was  so angry, that she threw the last fire finger at him.  Maui quickly turned himself into a bird so he could  dodge the flames.

He thought he was  so good, that he shut his eyes, but NO he was  wrong, and he got burnt on the bottom of his wings.

 

So in the end Maui flew back to the pa and said ’’ The goddess did not give me her fire, but on the way back I learnt how to make fire with to sticks’.

 So he showed them how to make the fire. It took some time but the flames came up and that is how fire came to the world.
